First things first,
forget the fact DIO
sang in a couple of bands in
recent years. 1984 is the
year of RONNIE JAMES DIO.The
First In Line when it comes
to the title of "Master Of
Metal". There are so. many
titles that can be given to
DIO, but what really counts
is what is on the stage and
on the grooves of the record.

in the couple of hours that

are independent labels, and
bands putting out their own

your feel about the state of
the industry today?

of the talent finally having

It was clearly evident that
Ronnie was a man on the top
of the metal world and re-

that DIO has arrived and
that he will conquer. He is
truly the Master of Metal,

GARY PLAYSIT LIKEIT IS
Overnight success seens
to be the forte in the mu-
sic business. The record
buyer very seldom sees the
long climb to the top. Gary
Moore is one artist who has
been on that ladder.
Gary Moore, ex-Thin Liz~
zy, ex-G Force,ex-Coleseum,
ex-Skid Row and currently
leading his own band is a
guitarist of extraordinary
capabilities. Long a favor-
ite of musicians, Moore has
finally received the sup-
port and respect due to him.
WMR caught up with Gary on
his U.S. Tour with RUSH, in
support of his latest album
"Victims Of The Future”.
WMR: What do you perceive as
the differences between the
U.S. & British audiences?
G.M. The fans in the U.S.
are more loyal, they seem
less fickle as compared to
the U.K. where things change
so fast you've to a flavor
of the month approach. You
don't know who is going to
be "IN" next week. America
is slow moving, so I think
you tend to get more loyal
fans.
WR: You're cited by a lot
of musicians as an influence
who influenced you, and who
are some guitarists that you
like?
6.ki, Peter Green was my main
influence. As far_as guitar-
ists, I like Pat Thrall. He
has been a favorite of mine
for about eight years.I us-
ed to run all over England
telling people about him. I
also like Neil Schon's play-
ing. I like exciting guit-
arists.

WMR: What should a Gary Mo-
ore guitar solo do?
G.M. I try to say something
within the song and try to
illustrate the content of
the song musically. Instead
of just going in and
play-
ing a million notes of tot-
ally mindless playing, I try
to structure my solos so I
go somewhere.
WNR:Hhat have you been try-
ing to develop or improve
upon in your Technique?
G.M. I think my playing is
becoming a bit more control-
Jed in the last few years.
On "Victims" I think I play
less notes but say more. I
want to play more controll=

WR: We understand you had
a bit of trouble with the
studio when you were recor-

G.M. We started off in Farm
West Studio which is Trevor
Horn's studio. What basical-
ly happened is that they op-
ened it up about three weeks
too early. We were the gui-
nea pigs. Everything was bre-
aking down all the time. But
once we changed studios all
went well,
WMR: Video is obviously play-
ing a big part in the music
business, We've seen your vi-
deo on MTV, what are your
thoughts on video?
G.M. It used to be that you
say you need x amount of dol-
Jars for the album and little
for the video, but now it is
more like we need $100,000
for the LP and $200,000 for
the video. It's a great new
medium for music.
WNR: In retrospect how do
you feel about the music in-
dustry, you've been in it
for a long time?
G.N. You have to deal with a
lot of insincerity in this
business and be nice toa
lot of people you don't want
to be nice to. usually tell
somebody flat out if I don't
like them, but unfortunately
you can find your career be-
jing hampered by honesty. It
doesn't do wonders for a re-
putation, but you've got to
be yourself, even — though
some people don't like you
to be who you are.

The group left Portland adopted Los An-
geles as their new home because heavy met-
al wasn't happening up in Oregon. All the
other bands were into pop music leaving a
discontented BLACK'N BLUE with no outlet
for their music. The band would load all
their equipment into a truck once a month
for the long trip and week end gig in L.A.
Now with the move, the long road trip was
finally over. The band gained a massive
following at the clubs in L.A.
BLACK'N BLUE were scheduled to release
their own EP, they recorded five songs for
the record with Michael Wagener and Don Do-
kken, but the disc was never released. The
song "Chains Around Heaven" appears with
nine other bands on a re-released version
of Metal Blade's first Metal Massacre. It
has been re-recorded and appears on their
first Geffen album which has just been re-
leased.
The new Geffen album sinply titled Black
'N Blue was recorded in Stommeln, West Ger-
many with Dieter Dirks producing. It was a
32 track digital recording, something not
often done in the world of rock and roll.
Especially for a new band from L.A. Most
of the recent signings in L.A. have been
with bands that BLACK'N BLUE have played
with and been friends with, such as MALICE,
RATT, ARMORED SAINT, KEEL, and MOTLEY CRUE.
There is no doubt BLACK'N BLUE will fol-
low their friends in conquering the world
of heavy metal. Especially with songs like
“Strong Will Rock", "School Of Hard Knocks’:
“Auto Blast" and "On To Eighteen" which is Lead vocalist Jamie St. James in action.

first hit single "Slow And

of "Slide It In". The long

the U.S. success that has
eluded them for so long.
We visted with David at
his hotel in West Hollywood
recently. We found Dave to
be straight forward, a per-
former who's time is long
overdue. WHITESNAKE has al-
ready conquered the rest of
the rock world. The U.S. is
the last to break.
David wasted no time in
getting down and getting in-
to the enthusiasm he has for
the new album, record — com-
pany and short tour of the
states. He was totally buz~
zed by the success of their
single and the production on
the album. Actually there is
a different mix on the U.S.
version of Slide It In". At
first he didn't like the re-
mix, but he likes it now.
The new album is the best
album David has ever done.

Wendy spoke to us about her
career to date.
WMR: So much of your past
stage show centered around
destruction, whether it was
chainsawing a guitar or the
blowing up of a car. What
does all of that really have
to do with rock?
Wendy: It's just who I am.
It's part of the way I ex-
press myself through hard,
heavy rock'n'roll. Another
way I express myself is by
striking out at the icons
of a society that's complet-
ely obsessed with conspic-
uous consumption. Give me
money or give me action,
and 1'11 take the adventure
every time.
WR: Do you still do the

WMR: What about the tour?
Wendy: August will start a

killer, It's going to be the
heaviest ever.
WMR: Tel1_us something about
the new album.
Wendy: It's excessive and
non-compromis ing.
WHR: How long did it take
to put your band together?
Wendy: It took two years.
WMR: Tell us a bit about
the video on NTV?
Wendy: It's the most daring
and adventourous video ever
made for heavy metal. It was
right on the edge. We had a
great time doing it. We did
a lot of it in the Arizona

It took aproximate-

was really hot in the desert.
WHR: You are without a doubt
the Heavy Metal Priestess.
You worked with Gene Simmons
the God of Thunder. Give us
a bit of input on this?
Wendy: Gene was great, very
Supportive and helped me pro-
gress and grow musically.
IMR: Anything else you might
like to add?
Wendy: Yes, just let every-
one know Wendy 0. is back.
The album and show will de-

New York's heavy metal
warriors ANTHRAX recently
toured America in support
of their album "Fistful Of
Metal". While RAVEN cal1-
ed it the "Live At The In-
ferno" tour, ANTHRAX de-
clared it the "Armed And
Dangerous" tour. The two
split the bill as co-head-
liners.
During the stop in L.A.
we cornered the band in
their spacious? dressing
room at the Country Club.
The band members wasted
no time in reveling in the
success of the tour, Their
album has been selling al]
over the world and the Ist
tour of the USA was sold
out.
The average age of the
members is 20 years, but
it was not evident as the
band took the stage with
enough explosive force to
shake the walls of Jericho.
A fitting statement consid-
ering the fact ANTHRAX in
the dictionary as a fatal
animal disease from ancient
times. The band's thrash-
ing show was furious, fast
and accepted with raised
fists and banging heads.
ANTHRAX is fast break-
ing thanks to a strong LP
and their current tour. It
will soon be time to go
back into the studio for
their second album tenta-
tively titled: "Spread It".
No song titles were avail-
able from the band during
their recent interview,but
they promise a heavier and
second album that without
a doubt will kill like the
first album is doing now.
We asked lead vocalist Neil
Turbin about the cover con-
cept for the album. He was
quick to let us know that
it is his idea of the ul-
timate act of violence. A
great cover if there ever
was one.
Al] of the band members
wasted no time in letting
us and our readers — know
that they are not posers
and that they are living
their lives to the fullest
just like the metal that
they are playing and writ-
ing. The band would like
to have Akira produced the
next album, A great choice
if they can get him.
The band got their re-
cord deal with Megaforce af-
ter sending Johnny Z their
friend a demo tape. After
signing their deal, the next
step was to get out of their
home turf and tour, Johnny
Z. made the offer and the
move is paying off.
ANTHRAX are in a good
position to be one of the
first N.Y. metal acts to
break on the West Coast, We
on the West Coast got the
fistful of metal we have all
been waiting for, now is the
time to send more bands over.
L.A. acts usually wait for
a major record deal to come
before venturing back East.
Hopefully that will change
and there could be a strong-
er exchange from Coast to
Coast.Tox was featured in WHR
number 3. We were proud to
introduce the band. Since
the intro, the band has been
touring the USA on the club
and smal] hall scene. After
seeing the band's show at
the Reseda Country Club it
is apparent ICON will take
etal to a new level. The
performance was polished
th enough raw edge to sa~
tisfy the crowd.
IR got together with
the band a couple of days
before the show to do an
update on the tour.
WR: How has the tour been
going so far?
Dan: Great, the best part
so far was the Memphis State
Fair where we played with Ac-
cept & Quiet Riot before a
crowd of 10,000 head bangers.
We've mainly been doing a lot
of small halls and clubs and
this was the best so far.
WHR: How Tong will you be on
the tour?
Tracy: For the rest of the
sumer.
WR: Will the band be doing
any European shows?
Dan: Not at this time,we are
going to conquer America at
first. He love the American
headbangers .
WHR: Your home town is Phoe-
nix, have you played there
since the LP release?
Tracy: Yeah, the re-
sponse was so incredible. We
have always had great fans
in Phoenix, this makes all
of the waiting worthwhile,
WMR: How did you secure the
deal with Capitol Records?
Dan: We originally sent Mike
Varney of Shrapnel Records
a demo tape. He liked it and
we all got together, The LP
was scheduled with Mike and
he has really helped guide
the band all the way.
WMR: Who came up with the i-
dea for the video?
Tracy: Michael Bernard dir-
ected it. It was filmed in
the same gar-
age as the movie "Chris-
tine", The shoot was really
a lot of work and a lot is
going on. Everyone was so
Supportive during the film-
ing.
WR: What are the plans for
the next album?
Dan: We hope to release the
new album in January. Right
now we want to spend a lot.

With the rash of new and
foraettable metal flooding
the scene it is great when
we find a band to rave and
rant about. STORM TROOPER
is the band, They have just
finished recording a mini
album due for release late
October titled "The Beast
Within".
STORM TROOPER was formed
by Damien Black last year
in Phoenix. Member changes
led to Albuquerque where a
stable line up was set and
the band went into the re-
cording studio for a demo.
Soon the band found that
there was no growth for the
metal they created in Albu-
queque and headed for Hol-
lywood. The band re-enter-
ed the studio to finish a
master for record release.
The group members will
start gigging in L.A. with
the release of their album.
Members are: Damien Black
on vocals, Nick Sweda gui-
tar, Rob Nelson drums, Jim
Fox bass and Tonmy Lee Stry-
der on guitar.
“Crank It Up" is the an-
them of TEEZE from Pennsy1-
vania. The five heavy met-
al rock and rollers are hot
and maniacs when it comes
to their music.
The band is totally con-
tained and logs many miles
touring each year. In their
area they are known as the
"Maniacs Of Rock". A title
fitting for these guys.
Their first vinyl effort
will be on the World Metal
compilation album. Also at
this time the band is re-
cording their first EP set
for release later this year.
Nenbers of the band are
Luis Rivera, Brian Stover,
Gregg Nalack, Kevin Stover,
and Dave Weakley.
If "Crank It Up" is any
indication of the style of
the class music of the band
they will have no problem
in conquering the rest of
the world.
Veyentr?
Orange County in South-
ern California is rapidly
gaining on the heavy met-
al front.
If VENGEANCE's live set
is any indication, then we
will see another surge of
metal from the area, Their
song "Forged In Steel" is
their best to date.
The band released their
own single on Hystic
cords last year, but World
Netal strongly suggests it
stay buried and forgotten.
The band's line up has
been stable for the past
year and it looks like it
won't be long til the band
goes back into a different
studio to record their Ist
mini album.
Lead vocalist, Curtis
Donvito is unique in offer-
ing a blues tinged vocal
style to the band’s music.
Other menbers include: Vic
Randazzo, Blake Hastings,
and Brad Norley.
Other song titles from
the band are "Reckless Roc-
ker", "Mean Frustrater" &
"Down For The Count".

what will undoubtedly start
a strong recording career.
The group is mainly from
the Chicago area featuring:
Dave La Faire on lead vo-

guitar and Nick PrioVolous
on bass.
The group was formed by
Dave and have been busy re~

band hopes to have it ready

POSSESSION is a brand of

ENFORCER was formed in
early '83,Many bands begin
with copy songs then add
origonal songs. This band
of head bangers knew from
the start that only their
songs would do. This gave
ENFORCER the edge over
many bands in their area.
Most bands fail for lack

These metal merchants

songs such as "High Treas-

the band's demo tape gave
the band stronger desires
and are also on the World

“Salem's Curse".
The band's arsenal in-

There's a new metal scene
breaking out of Texas. L.A.

as HELSTAR, BLACK STAR, BOSS
TWEED and TYTON.
TYTON are a young band of
headbangers, that sound more

30.While many bands have fal-
len prey to glitter and the
make up, TALAS has relied on
nothing more than precision
playing and true showmanship.
Billy Sheehan is rapidly
becoming a musical legend on
the bass. Musicians and cri-
tics alike have applauded
his unique dedication as a
musical artist. Sheehan's
creative ability has taken
the bass guitar to new hor-
izons.
Sheehan's musical talent
can only be topped by his
honest personality. Artists
such as Billy Sheehan make
my job as a writer person-
ally rewarding!
WHR: I read that you started
out playing guitar. What was
the reason switching to bass?
B.S. Actually I wasn't very
accomplished as a guitarist
when I switched. It's kind
of a misnomer that started
with the Mike Varney column
in "Guitar Player" which
said that I was a lead gui-
tar player who later switch-
ed to bass. I did play gui-
tar, but it was just basic
chords and a few simple riff
and leads. Since then, I've
kind of picked it up again
and relearned it in order to
write with, Sometimes it is
easier to write with a guit-
ar.
As far as your question re-
garding the idea of having
switched over, I wanted to
play bass, although for a
short time as a kid I wanted
to play drums.
WR: I think that every gui-
tarist in history wanted to
play drums.
B.S. Right...Everybody's a
drummer for heaven's sake!
The first guy who influenced
BILLY SHEEHAN,
BASS EXTRAORDINAIRE
me was one of my neighbors
who played in a lot of rock
bands. I wanted to play bass
like him, but at the time it
was a little difficult to
get a bass. My sister had
a guitar, so that's what 1
practiced on until I final-
ly got a bass. I wanted to
play bass because I thought
it was a heavier instrument,
Guitars just seem light to
me.
WNR: You've been referred to
as "the Eddie Van Halen of
bass". Does that put great
pressure on you to constant-
ly pioneer new tricks, tech-
niques and ideas on bass?
B.S. That isn't what puts a
pressure on me. I put the
pressure on myself. Not to
try to emulate any of my
peers, but rather to f
something that is not the
normal or the ordinary and
incorporate it into my play-
ing. Eddie is pretty much
the same way. There are a
lot of players with new i-
deas but that doesn't neces-
sarily mean that it's going
to work. If you're lucky e-
nough to get four or five
good, new, strong ideas in
your career, then you're re-
ally way ahead of the game.
WMR: What modifications were
done to your '69 Precision
bass?
B.S. The only modification
I've done to it is to put
a seperate output on 1t for
a different pick up. One
pickup supplies a deep bass
tone while the other car-
ries a more treble sound.
I have one amp for the bass
and a second amp for the
high end. This system al-
lows me to play fills with-
out the low-end going away.
What are your goals as a
musician?
B.S. Ny goal is to play by
myself for long periods of
time and remain interesting
If it's still interesting it
is still worth something.
WHR: What sets TALAS

Billy Sheehan

B.S. It's a unique band in
away. We like to keep the
show Spontaneous, yet stil]
within a format that works.
There is no doubting the
fact that TALAS has accom-
plished that point. Billy

HELIX is back. One of the
hardest working bands from
Canada has just released a
follow up to their first LP
"No Rest For The Wicked".
This time out the band is
Walking The Razor's Edge.
The band's first hit single
was "Heavy Metal Love". The
single off the new LP is
"Rock You". It has been a
strony radio addon since
it's release in mid July.
The video for "Rock You" was
filmed in a 200 year old qua-
rry in Toronto.
Helix gained a quick follow-
ing in Europe by touring the
continent with KISS last Fall.
It opened many doors for the
band whose avid following of
head bangers filled all the
halls on the sold out tour.
It's been a long ten years
stomping across the Canad-
ian heartland for HELIX, a
country that has sent many
bands on to gold and plat-
inum status in the music
industry. HELIX is differ-
ent. Brian and Brent were
in L.A. recently to talk
about the band and their
hard core following. They
know the new LP will break
‘them internationaily. It is
their strongest work, The
band actually has four LPs
released, the first two are
tmuch sought after, released
on the band's own label in
Canada.
HELIX will be touring the US
during the next month offer-
ing metal on the razor's ed-
ge. The band has just added
a new bassist & back up vo-
calist, Daryl Gary. It gave
the new album a stronger &
heavier bottom needed.
One thing that sets HELIX
apart from most metal is a
unique twin lead guitar that
the band has. Their sound is
further expanded by the un-
usual method of lead playing
of Paul Hackman. Most guit-
arists strum down, Paul has
a style and technique of
pucking the strings up. Also
he plays through a Canadian
made Garnett Amp which is a
hard one to find today. He
uses the old style Marshal!
Amps with 8 ten inch speak-
ers,
Lead vocalist Brian also
contributes their sound by
his vocals which set HELIX
apart from the other metal
bands on the current scene
The band is a melodic me-
tal band which gives a more
diverse sound, Heavy enough

90291MARILLION
Fugazi
Capitol Records LP
The band is one of England's
strongest clasical rock un-
its. In the vein of Genesis.
Hard enough for rock fans,
commercial enough for radio
air play.
A
Unlaced
Mausoleum Records LP IMP
This heavy band went to Eu-
rope for their record deal.
From the Eastern U.S. it's
a must. Full of headbanging
metal. Maryann is totally
in control. The band is out-
standing and powerful. "Call
Of The Wild" is the fastest
cut on the disc.
DIO
The Last In Line
Warner Bros. LP
It!s all DIO on this power-
ful display of metal. Musi-
cianship, production and vo-
cals all have the elements
to make this a must. Every
song is a hit, whether fast
or slow. And there are few
slow songs. Just pure metal
from a master.
BILLY SQUIER
Signs Of Life
Capitol Records LP
Billy's back with his most
ambitious album ever. Once
an artist gains commercial
success he finds himself on
the defense with each record.
This album is solid and well
produced with a taste of ex-
perimenting in sound. Well
worth buying.
CHATEAUX
Fire Power
Ebony Records LP IMP
This power trio has a gut
wrenching sound that kills.
"Rock & Roll Thunder" and
"V8 Crash" are the heaviest
and fastest. The rest bor-
ders on hard rock. Well
worth the import price.
NEW YORK METAL-84
Various Artists
Nost compilation LPs sound
alike. This is an LP with a
difference. All of the bands
are tight and heavy. WARHEAD
TEAZER, BLACKLACE and CITIES
are the best of the groups.
The heaviest song is without
a doubt WARHEAD'S "WHORE".
HOLLAND
Early Warning
Ebony Records LP IMP.
This is an album full of sol-
idjhard driving rock & roll.
The band is tight and lead
vocalist Doggy stands above
the band with power that is
the key in making HOLLAND a
good band. All cuts are high-
ly recommended.
HELIX
Walkin’ The Razor's Edge
Capitol Records LP
Turn the volume to maximum
for this album. HELIX has
their best yet. "Rock You"
is an anthem if there ever
was one. Solid the the only
way to describe the album.
The band has a heavy produc-
tion job on this, but didn't
sacrfice their metal sound,
HELIX are Canada's hardest
working live band and this
album will showcase well on
the stage. Their previous re-
Tease "No Rest" was a great
intro for this"Razor's Edge”
The dual guitar sound gives
the band a fuller sound and
of course lead vocalist Brian
Vollmer has a voice made for
heavy metal. The single off
the album is "Rock You" it
is one of the most added new
releases on radio in the US.
CUTTY SARK
Die Tonight
Mausoleum Records LP Imp.
CUTTY SARK's previous album
was rock and roll. This LP
is heavy metal madness. Al]
cuts are delivered heavy and
fast. The band has improved
immensely. Hailing in from
West Germany CUTTY SARK de-
finitely has the power,songs
and musicianship that will
make them international re~
cording artists. "Die To-
Night" is _a classic. "Vul-
tures In The Air" gives the
listener a more diverse side
of the band. Well paced and
delivered.
CIRITH UNGOL
King OF The Dead
Enigma Records LP
It's been a few years since
CIRITH UNGOL has seen vinyl.
The new album is heavy, but
not as commercially accept-
able as "Frost & Fire". As
far as musicianship CIRITH
UNGOL are right there. Lead
vocalist Tim Baker has uni
que voice that sets the al-
bum out from other new re-
leases. If you're looking
for speed metal you won't
find it on this album. How-
ever if early BLACK SABBATH
sound is what you want, then
you've found it.
LADY KILLER
Lady Killer
Allegiance Records LP
This was recorded in mid ‘82.
The band comes from New York.
It's heavy, but raw. There
were nomemorable cuts, but
the album works well.
ARMED FORCES
Let There Be Metal
Metallic Flame Records EP
"The Night Rider" and "The
Intruder" are fast metal,
but not enough to satisfy
all the hype heard on the
band. Two out of four songs
doesn't make this metal, it
makes it forgetable.STYGIAN SHORE
tygian Shore
Roadster Records EP
From the state of Kansas we
have a good hard rock pack-
age that is heavy, but not
heavy enough to satisfy the
hardcore headbangers. Side 2
has the most powerful songs.
2NO_WHITE
AIT Hail To Thee
Enigma Records LP
This sucker is fast. Repeta-
tive rythms with heavy drun-
ing and high pitched vocals.
This is by all means a scorc-
her. With songs like "Sledge-
hammer" and "Do Or Die" it is
definitely heavy and fast.
FORCE
Set Ne Free
Heavy Metal Records LP
Considering the band's name,
Vabel and outrageous album co-
ver, one expects some hard and
driving metal, but instead on
this album one gets a versati-
le rock group.
Side one opens with a fusion
type rock song titled "Kings
Fury". As you venture on you
may notice a bit of old Styx.
Side two is the heaviest side
with "Break Away". You get a
good taste of Rainbow on this
side. Al] in all this is an
album worth the money if you
like the aforementioned groups.
P
Cry For Nercy
Cameleon Records EP
Very heavy and driving, the
title should be Scream For
Nercy. True headbanging on
this EP from Canada's new-
est metal band.
PET HATE
The Bride Wore Red
Heavy Metal Records LP
As the old saying goes you
can't judge a book by the co-
ver. Don't be fooled by the
record company name. This is
not heavy metal, be forewarn-
ed.
WILD DOGS
Man's Best Friend
Shrapnel Records LP
This album is a must for all
hard rock fans. Wild Dogs is
not as good as their previ-
ous release but still a good
metal album produced by Mike
Varney. The cover is worth
the money alone.
BRONZE
Taken By Storm
Bronze Records LP
This five piece band a clean
crisp rock and roll sound on
this release. They are just
heavy enough to please hard
rock fans, but too light to
give us headbangers our mon-
ey's worth.
SOUND BARRIER
Born To Rock
Pitbull Records
Pfter being dropped by MCA
Records the band went into
the studio and recorded this
new one. Face it, these guys
play dann good hard rock and
heavy metal with enough bite
to keep it together. A clas-
sic remake of "Born To Be
Wild" is included, heavier
than Steppenwolf. The band
is tight and waste no time
assaulting the ears. Sound
Barrier is the only Black
heavy metal band with the
balls to make it.
Mini LP
WHITESNAKE
Slide It In
Geffen Records LP
This will be the album that
finally breaks Whitesnake in
America. Already the song of
"Slide It In" is a hit not
only on the radio but MT V.
A second single is being re-
Jeased "Slow'N'Easy". The pro-
duction is great thanks to a
team effort with Martin Birch.
The USA release is mixed dif-
ferent from the UK release,
but both versions have enough
memorable songs to break the
band in America after several
false starts. WHITESNAKE has
gold records from every coun-
try in the world except the
USA. It looks like this one
is gonna do it for the band,
David Coverdale is confident
with his vocals and John Sykes
has a strong bite with his gui-
tar work all through the album,
Cozy's drumming is thunderous
and heavy. It's all here the
right songs, the right, banda
great production job. A must
album.
STRYPER
The Yellow And Black Attack
Enigma Records LP
This has to be the most inter.
esting record to come across
the turntable in a long time.
Christian metal is what the
band plays, but that is the
live show.” This album or if
you will mini LP is a record
full of rock. Side one is the
side that features the relig-
ious overtones especially on
“From Wrong To Right". Side
two has the hardest song that
borders on heavy metal with
"Co-mon Rock". The last two
songs on side two are out of
place love ballads. Great for
2 major release, but a bit on
the lost end for an independ-
ent trying to find a market.
Good harmonies and tight play:
ing make the album polished,
Christian rock, religious me-
tal, what ever you want to
cali it, Stryper have cone
up with something new.
BIG BROTHER & HOLDING CO.
faper Thi
Nade To Last Records LP
Janis & Co. made some great
music in the old days. Her
death was a tragedy. This LP
is a tragedy as well. For a
fan it is a must, for someone
who is suddenly discovering
what the San Francisco sound
and scene were all about it's
a poor effort. It's a relic
from the past that has a lim-
ited market, I suggest buying
Janis’ Greatest Hits on CBS.
That is the real Janis Joplin.BRITISH METAL MINSTRELS
There are hundreds of LP
releases and new bands born
each year. England has just
given America “Bronze".ho's
new album "Taken By Storm"
and first tour of the U.S.A.
has taken on a different ap-
proach from the other metal
acts that the U.K. has given
the metal world, such as Ir-
on Maiden, Judas Priest and
Motorhead.
BRONZE were born in late
1982, then signed with Bronze
Records, England in late '83.
The band's first albun will
sound familiar, this band is
from the school of Journey
and Foreigner. Their sound
is not a copy, but a brand
of rock that places Bronze

During their stop in Greens-
boro, North Carolina bassist
Victor Langen gave the WNR
office a call to update our
readers on the band.
WHR: How have things been on
the tour so far?
Victor: Very good the respon-
se has been great. The album
is selling well also.
What has been your best
show so far?
Victor: Nashville, we played
with RATT and ALCATRAZZ for
10,000 head bangers.
WMR: I'd like to talk a bit
about the album, Being from
Canada, why did you decide
to record in Hollywood?
mentioned groups. The same
slick production, however on
"Taken By Storm" the group
has maintained a heavy bite
that gives them an edge with
the metal sound of the group.
BRONZE was originally for-
med by Chris Goulstone with
Paul Webb, The remaining me-
mebers are Max Bacon a uni-
que lead vocalist, Shaun Ki-
rkpatrick-guitar and Carl
Matthews on drums.
Victor: He a11 made the de-
cision. We wanted to work
with Spencer Proffer.
WMR: Did Spencer help the
band as far as creating the
sound that you have. KICK
AXE has it's own sound that
helps you a lot.
Victor: Spencer helped with
that, however we had that
down, he helped us refine
our sound. Spencer helped a
bit creating 4 & 5 part har-
monies, to give us a fuller
sound.
WR: How did you hook up at
Pasha Records?
Victor: We sent out our demo
tapes to the people we want-
ed to work with and Spencer
was the first to respond,
As soon at the band comple-
ted their line up they re-
corded the first album and
rushed released it in Eng-
land.
Now the band is touring the
U.S.A, mainly smaller halls
and large clubs. They want
to get their music to the
people and feel the strong-
est way is to reach the ci-
ties and towns missed by
the major groups.
Actually he flew to Edmonton
to see us.
WHR: When do you plan to re-
cord your next album?
Victor; He hope to go into
the studio in early '85 with
Spencer again.
WHR: Will you be finished on
the USA tour by then?
Victor: Yes,we want to get
to the East Coast, then get
on with the next album,
The call from Victor was
cut short at this point be-
cause of a sound check. The
band should be touring til]
the early Fall. At this time
the band is touring with no
hit single and winning over
the crowds at all stops.ct year Y &T de-
livered "Mean Streak"
their most commercial
album. It has been a long
climb for Y & T spending a
lot of years on the road. A
commercial success signifies
new frontiers for the group.
The group has just offer-
ed the world their newest LP
"In Rock We Trust". It gives
the listener a polished me-
tal album that will give
Y &T a larger audience and
more airplay. Both are key
elements for survival in the
metal wars.
Many hardcore fans from
the “Earthshaker" and the
"Black Tiger" days will snub
the band and new release. It
is important to know that as
a band matures and grows it
is essential to widen it's
spectrum. That is what Yat
are going through now.
Recently World Metal was
in Hollywood at the old Cha-
plin Studios, better known
to the rock world as A&M Re-
cords. We interviewed Y&T.
World Metal Editors are hard
core fans of the band and in
our first issue did a com
plete retrospect on the band
including flying to Albuque-
que, New Mexico for the show.
WR: Do you feel you are on
the verge of breaking major,
and why did it take so long?
Dave: We have always spent
a lot of time on the road.
Also we have never had the
opportunity to have produ-
cers give us creative in-
put, Tom Allon was great
to work with and helped us
refine our sound.
Joey: Yeah, he showed the
band tricks in the studio
that give us a fuller sound
without sacrificing.
WR: What do you think of
the metal scene today?
Dave: It has it's good and
bad points just like every
thing else. There are many
bands making with hype and
a few with talent. The new
movenent is great because
it finally gives opportun-
ity.
WHR: What do you think is
the key to making this LP
so commercial?
Phil: It is definitely all
the pre-production work and
the expanding the group has
done in recent years. Y & T
has always been a band with
out a producer, we didn't
really know the full poten-
tial of the studio,
WMR: Will there be any mas-
sive staging on this tour?
Dave: The main thing is the
band and the music. We will
add a few surprises to give
the show something more. It
will mainly be the music.
That is what Y & T are not-
ed for.
WMR: You've been called the
Oakland Destroyers, why are
there not many bands from
the bay area into metal?
Dave: There are a lot up in
the Bay area, but not talen:
ted. I'm not putting any-
one down, but most bands in
rock go down to L.A. to try
to make it and that leaves
many areas dry of new bands|
WMR: Is there anything else
that you would like to add?
Dave: Yeah, we want to tell
all of our fans and friends
that we are still the Y &T
they have always liked, but
we are expanding and grow-
ing, grow with us.
Y & T have started tour-|
ing in support of "In Rock
We Trust" the band offers
the same heavy, fast paced
show that has gained then
a strong cult, but have ad-
ded a bit more that has to
be seen to be believed.
The strongest thing Y & 1]
has is their musicianship
and songs they excel over
the many so called heavy
metal bands on the scene,
they've still got their
meanstreak to rock!PS ot
POISON was born one year ago in
Harrisburgh, Pennsylvania when Rik-
ki Rocket and Bret Michaels began
to recruit compatible members for
their group Spectres.
When Bret and Rikki met up with
Koko Smith, who was doing a stint
with a local rival band Dirty Ang-
el and Bobby Dall a guitarist who
switched to the bass for the band
The menbers clicked and POISON en-
erged.
On March 7, 1984 POISON moved
to Los Angeles and began working a
project for an album with Kim Fow-
ley. The project didn't work and
the two parties parted ways.
POISON soon met Jim Faraci, the
engineer of RATT'S “Out Of The Cel-
lar" album. Work began inmediately
on anew album, The end result is
a 3.song demo tape recorded at the
Village Recorders.
The band has been gigging all
the clubs in and around L.A. with
a strong response. We will get to-
gether with the band in our next
issue for an interview and update.
HURRICANE
There's a storm brewing in Los
Angeles. Very seldom in the music
industry does so much talent find
it's way into a situation that are
going to make some real noise.
All of the members of HURRICANE
have accomplished a lot in a short
period of time. World Metal Re-
port was invited to a recent show-
case for the band at S.I.R. studio
in Hollywood. Showcases are usual-
ly a waste of time, but this time
there is a difference, HURRICANE
is a band that has some interest-
ing credentials:
A) Bassist Tony Cavazo, brother of
QUIET RIOT'S Carlos Cavazo is the
co-writer of the title tune on Me~
tal Health.
8) Drummer John Shearer is a top
English drummer that has recorded
and toured with Uriah Heap and I-
ron Butterfly. He has one of the
most massive drum kits seen in re-
cent years.
C) Vocalist Kelly Hansen was chos~
en from a roster of 120 auditions.
Only a few points that give an
extremely powerful edge in the me~
tal market. With all of the name
credits this band has a lot of ex-
pectations to live up to, and af-
ter seeing their showcase, it will
not be a hard call to fame.BRAND NEW SCORCHING METAL!
