Experiment 1.
Small, clear glass
Baking soda
Tap water
9-volt battery
Two 9-inch pieces insulated copper wire
Scissors
Tape
Stirring spoon
Eye protection
1. Fill glass ¾ full of tap water
2. Add tsp baking soda; stir vigorously
3. Use scissors to strip ¼ in insulation off both ends of each wire.
4. Connect end of wire to a terminal on battery by laying wire over, pressing down, taping.
5. Repeat step 4 with other wire and other battery terminal
6. Immerse wires in baking soda/water solution in glass
7. Bubbles coming from both ends
8. Observe.
9. Run experiment 10 minutes. Pull out wires. Observe wires. What color is it?
10. What color is your solution?
Experiment 1.2
Long piece of string
Scissors
Large tabletop
Person to help
Cellophane tape
Pencil eye protection
1. Hold arm horizontally, elbow bent, open palm, fingers stretched out. Helper holds string at elbow
2. Stretch string from elbow to tip of middle finger; cut. This is your cubit
3. Stretch string from elbow to index finger tip. Length of string from last knuckle to finger tip; cut string for “finger” unit
4. Take cubit string; tape to table stretched to full length
5. Using finger unit string, measure how many finger units are in cubit.
6. Record number of finger strings, incl.decimal; that is the number of fingers in 1 cubit.
7. Unfasten cubit string; measure the length of tabletop in cubits. Record, incl decimal, in cubits.
8. Repeat that measurement, using finger string instead
9. Do the same thing with table top width, measuring in both cubits and fingers
10. Take your meas. For tabletop length in cubits; convert it into fingers. Compare converted length in fingers to number of
fingers you actually measured.
11. Do the same thing for meas. Of table width.
12. Clean up.
