Questions 19 to 26 are based on the following passage.

Read the passage carefully and choose the best answer A, B, C or D.

For each question, mark your answer on the answer sheet.

One day, a man saw an old lady stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day,
he could tell she needed help. So, he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was
still sputtering when he approached her. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had
stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and
hungry. He could see she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was
those chills which only fear can put in you. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait
in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is John Wilson.”
All she had was a flat tyre, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. John crawled under the car,
looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon, he was able to change the
tire. But he had to get dirty, and his hands hurt. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down
the window and talked to him. She told him she was from St. Louis and was only passing through. She
couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid.
John just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount
would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened
had he not stopped. John never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him; this was
helping someone in need, and God knows plenty of people who had given him a hand in the past. He
had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if
she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that
person the assistance they needed, and John added, “And think of me.”
He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he
felt good as he headed home, disappearing into the twilight. A few miles down the road, the lady saw
a small café. She went in to grab a bite to eat and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her
trip home. It was a dingy-looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was
unfamiliar to her. A waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet
smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress
was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady
wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered John.

SULIT S5-9 1119/1

After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred-dollar bill. The waitress quickly went
to get change for her hundred-dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone
by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed
something written on the napkin. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: “You
don’t owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I’m helping you.
If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do, do not let this chain of love end with you.” Under
the napkin were four more $100 bills.
There were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it
through another day. That night, she got home from work and climbed into bed. She thought about
the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her
husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard. She knew how worried her
husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low,
“Everything’s going to be all right. I love you, John Wilson.”

19 What made the old lady so scared standing in that chilly weather?
A She was afraid of being attacked by strangers.
B She was afraid of being haunted by ghosts.
C She was afraid of being in the dark alone.
D She was afraid that she might fall sick.

20 What had happened to the old lady?

A She was hungry.
B She had been robbed.

A refused to take the money.
B smiled as she gave him money.
C remembered his life in the past.
D asked for more money for the job.

Part 4

Questions 27 to 32 are based on an article about Balik Pulau and durians.

Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits
each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Mark your answer on
the answer sheet.

Balik Pulau and Durians

As the name suggests, Balik Pulau is situated behind the Island of Penang. “Balik Pulau” means

“back of the island”. It is situated on the southwest side district of Penang Island, surrounded by hills
on the East and the Andaman Sea on the West. In the morning, one can enjoy the cool breeze from the

hills. 27 It is the green lung of the Penang Island.

Balik Pulau is home to the famous Balik Pulau Durian. The rocky soil is suitable for durian trees

to grow. 28 If one would take a seedling from Balik Pulau and plant it outside in another

state or even on the mainland of Penang, the durian tree may bear fruit, however, the quality will be

different. 29 The quality of the fruit is not similar if planted outside Perlis.

Durian trees will flower around December to January when there is a short dry spell of about

two weeks. 30 So, it is a delicate balance of the weather that determines the success of the

flowering process. One can get a bumper harvest in one year but a poor harvest in the following year.

Locals will know if the durians stem from a local orchard or imported from outside Balik Pulau

by simply passing in front of the stalls. 31 The lack of a strong smell may indicate that the

durian is not locally grown from a local Balik Pulau orchard.

There is a long list of durian varieties, each with its name that signifies its different characteristics.

Seasoned durian sellers can tell the difference only by observing the fruit’s shape, thorn and colour.

32 The list goes on and keeps on expanding as newer durian varieties are officially registered.

The different varieties are not only in name, as each variety will have its taste.

So, calling all durian lovers, don’t miss the durian season. Come to Balik Pulau and have a taste

of its flavourful durians. You will not be disappointed.

Part 5

Questions 33 to 40 are based on the following texts. Read the texts carefully and answer the questions
that follow.

INTERESTING SPOTS IN SABAH

A – Hannah, Diver
I love Sipadan. The waters of Sipadan Island are home to over 3,000 species of marine life and coral reefs,
making it one of the top five diving destinations in the world. During 1933, this island was declared as a
bird sanctuary. Don’t miss spotting green and hawksbill turtles, scalloped hammerhead sharks and other
marine lives here. When you dive here, you will drop 2,000 meters down to the seabed.

B – Amsyar, Traveller
Flowing from the Crocker Range to the Sulu Sea, Kinabatangan is the longest river in Sabah. The river
passes through varying habitats, including oxbow lakes, mangroves and dipterocarp forests. I believe
visitors will love this pristine river, which offers tremendous opportunities to spot exotic wildlife. Also,
spot rare species like the orangutans, crocodiles, and hornbills. While travelling through Kinabatangan,
you will pass through bountiful small and untouched hamlets such as Bilit, which stands as an epitome of
beauty.
C – Amzar, Businessman
I love the ambience of this luxury private island resort. This serene retreat offers exquisite accommodations,
sophisticated cuisine, and unparalleled water sports activities in one of the most pristine corners of the
world. Manukan Island is surrounded by protected coral reefs with a lush rainforest and beautiful white
sand beaches.
D – Ammar, Mountaineer
For a hiker like me, Bohey Dulang Island is a sight not to miss, as it is a mountainous island forged by
the remains of an ancient volcano. The southern side of the lagoon is open, but just below the surface is a
protracted stretch of reef, which represents the southern cratered fringe. The island is best known for its
spectacular views at the top of its peak. It is possible to trail around the island at low tide.
E – Afiqah, Teacher
Mataking Island is my father’s favourite spot for vacation. The resort island offers one of the best beaches
in Malaysia and is the furthest from Semporna on the east coast of Sabah, where a boat trip takes nearly
an hour one way. Stroll around the island to look for our secluded place. One of the unique things about
the island is that they have an underwater post office where you can literally post a letter or postcards
anywhere. I highly recommend this island to those who crave a Maldives-like experience in Malaysia.
F – Danish, Sports Enthusiast
The 15km long river of Kiulu facilitates bountiful water sports activities for visitors. I love paddling
through the dense water to overcoming rapids, and there are endless activities that will thrill your senses.
For me, this white water rafting trip is suitable for all those who seek a relaxing trip. If you are a beginner
who wants to kick-start your water sports adventure journey, here is a golden opportunity. Once you are
done with water sports, sit on the river banks and bask in the warmth of nature.

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying refers to using the Internet to frighten or harm other people. It includes

sending nasty text messages and emails, spreading (21) by e-mails and posting

embarrassing pictures on social networking sites. When teenagers experience cyberbullying, they

may feel (22) and withdraw from their families and friends. They may prefer

to spend their time (23) and look for excuses to stay away from school. They

may also develop low self-esteem and change of personality. However, there are several ways that can

(24) us from being a victim when we are online.

Do not share our personal information, (25) and private photographs

with the people we meet online. Also, before we post something on the Internet, think twice or thrice.

Do not post a message or comment when we are feeling (26) or angry. Wait

until we are calm because our words will have consequences. If teenagers do become a victim of

cyberbullying, they need to tell their parents or (27) adults such as their teachers

or school counsellor about it. Then, they can take a screenshot or save e-mails, posts, or pictures as (28)
before they delete them.

Nowadays, social networking sites allow their users to (29) abuse, so it

is easier for them to inform fake profiles, inappropriate pictures, and mean comments. Last but not least,

if you see messages or comments which (30) other people, do not share the post

or click the like’ button. That will only encourage the bully to repeat his irresponsible actions.
