VICTORIAN HOMES: “LIGHT AND AIR”

I. INTRO: chgs include lger windows, delicate plasterwork, wallpaper,


and a fitted carpet. Much more furniture, special chairs, sofas, tables:
designed for comfort; more dense w/ objects and softening effect
--owned hundreds of books; special room for reading
BUT no central heating, commodes: aristocrats considered it crude to
share a bathroom with others
II. Inside: horror of bad smells , epidemics
Stuffy interiors but also addicted to outdoors: bicycling,sprots,
gymnastics, seaside holidays
Bathing increased, but often cold or tepid water
Lighting: candles (100=1 lightbulb); gaslight

“EFFICIENCY”

So many appliances, all manual, so many domestics


1877 first electric lights, and by 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, “Model Electric
Kitchen” included rang, broiler, water heater; soon iron, toasters, etc.
