Know Your Bill
The electricity bill of the consumer is the sole document that is essential for
all the financial transactions between the consumer and the electric
company.
Consumer name, address, consumer no, bill details and metered units,
billed units, Tariff category are mentioned on the upper side of the first
page of the bill
The categories of customers would be Residential, Commercial & Industrial.
Further Commercial and Industrial category will be categorized as HT or LT
Sanctioned load: It is the load that is sanctioned by TATA Power to the
consumer beyond which he is not permitted to consume power
Contract Demand: It means the demand which is mutually agreed between
TATA Power & consumer as entered into in agreement or agreed through
other written communication
Penalty is charged if the Demand usage is more than agreed; i.e. Contract
demand.
RMD: It is the maximum amount of power the customer has consumed in
30mins slot timed from 00hrs by internal clock in the meter during the
month.
BMD:
Monthly Billing Demand will be the higher of the following:
a) Actual Maximum Demand recorded.
b) 75% of the highest Billing Demand recorded during the preceding eleven
months, subject to the limit of Contract Demand;
c) 65% of the Contract Demand
Power Factor: The power factor (PF) is defined as the ratio of the real
power (kW) to the apparent power (kVA)
Power Factor= Total kwh / Total kvah
Load Factor:
%Load Factor = Consumption during the month / Maximum Consumption
possible during the month
Maximum consumption possible = Contract Demand (kVA) × Unity Power
Factor × Total no. of hours during the month
Past 12 months consumption:
This gives past 12 months consumption, demand and Power factor details
along with graphical presentation of consumptions

Energy Charges:
This cost is determined from the number of units consumed by consumer.

TOD:
A tariff structure known as a time of day (TOD) tariff applies variable
charges depending on what time of day electricity is used. It implies that
the price of consuming 1 unit of power will vary according to the time of
day—morning, noon, evening, or night.

Demand charges:
• Each month, the consumer has to pay a specific fixed amount to the
electric company.
• These charges are mainly towards the network infrastructure like
electric cable network, Transformers, Substations etc.
• This amount needs to be paid even in absence of power usage.
Demand Charges = BMD * Demand charges
Demand Penalty Charges:
In case a consumer (availing Demand-based Tariff) exceeds his Contract
Demand, he will be billed at the applicable Demand Charge rate for the
Demand actually recorded, and also be charged an additional amount at the
rate of 150% of the applicable Demand Charge (only for the Demand in
excess of the Contract Demand).
Fuel Adjustment Charges:
• In order to supply to the consumers, the electricity company needs to
purchase power from the power generating companies.
• This rate of power purchase can vary due to certain inevitable
circumstances (e.g. increased prices of oil or natural gas in the global
markets, increased demand for power or shortage in power supply).
• In such eventualities, the electric company has to purchase power at
higher price in order to meet the demand.
• This difference in price is recovered from the consumers through the
fuel adjustment cost.
• It is calculated on the basis of number of units consumed by the
consumer (slab wise) every month.
• It will be applicable to all consumer categories for their entire
consumption.
Fuel Adjustment Charges = Total kvah * Fuel adjustment charges
(rs./unit)
Regulatory Asset charges:
The regulatory asset charge (RAC) is the cost of laying power network and
other related works.
Wheeling Charges:
• Associated with the wheeling of electricity or transmission of
electricity from generation point to load point where actual utilization
of electricity takes place.
Wheeling Charges = Total kvah * wheeling charges (rs./unit)
Electricity Duty:
• The electricity duty is levied@ 21% for Commercial by the State
Government
• This amount is collected on behalf of the State Government.
Electricity Duty = 21% (sum of above 1 to 10 components)
Tax on Sale of Electricity:
Tax on sale of electricity is levied @ 0.3404 Rs./kwh on all units sold in
accordance with Maharashtra State Tax on Sale of Electricity Act.
Tax on Sale of Electricity = 0.3404 * kwh
Delayed Payment Charges:
• In case the electricity bill is not paid within the due date mentioned on
the bill, delayed payment charges on the billed amount, including the
taxes, cess, duties, etc., shall be levied on simple interest basis at the
rate of 1.25% on the billed amount for the first month of delay
Interest on Arrears:
• The rate of interest chargeable on the arrears of payment of billed dues
shall be as given below:

Load Factor Incentive:
• Consumers having Load Factor above 75% and up to 85% will be entitled
to an incentive in the form of a rebate of 0.75% on the Energy Charges
for every percentage point increase in Load Factor from 75% to 85%.
• Consumers having a Load Factor above 85 % will be entitled to a rebate
of 1% on the Energy Charges for every percentage point increase in Load
Factor from 85%. The total rebate will be subject to a ceiling of 15% of
the Energy Charges applicable to the consumer.
• The Load Factor incentive will be available only if the consumer has no
arrears with the Distribution Licensee, and payment is made within
seven days from the date of the electricity bill.
Tax collection at source:

Discount:
• A prompt payment discount of 1% of the monthly bill (excluding Taxes
and Duties) shall be provided to consumers for payment of electricity
bills within 7 days from the date of their issue.
