CHAPTER Ⅰ

INTRODUCTION

Abstract

The global pandemic has presented a variety of challenges, including physically, emotionally,
financially, and much more, the effects of which are only beginning to be felt. It may also affect
the way we go about conducting research. Many researchers are having to suspend data collection
or re-design their projects taking into account social-distancing measures. Given the possibility
that the virus and measures to manage it may extend even up to 5 years (Kissler et al., 2020), the
minimal proportion of COVID-19-related qualitative research accounting for psychosocial
aspects being carried out at the time this paper was written is alarming. The aim of the present
commentary is thus to provide a brief overview of some challenges and opportunities when
conducting qualitative health research within the context of the pandemic and to encourage
research of this nature to describe, explore and explain the multiple impacts of COVID-19. Much
qualitative research typically relies on face-to-face interaction for data collection through
interviews, focus groups and field work. But there are myriad ways researchers and students can
collect qualitative data online or gather textual data that already exists. Qualitative research is
indeed complimentary to the other types that are currently being conducted, and equally
important to ensure an understanding of the various contexts and inform how we respond to the
pandemic in the most appropriate way (Vindrola-Padros et al.,2020).

This research, study the possible advantage and disadvantage of conducting research amidst
Covid-19 pandemic. The new normal learning system of education is adhering to the new virus-
fighting protocols. The researcher may conduct their study online but, it raises concern about
transferring the same amount of quality research traditionally to current remote system. The
number of participants and amount of information gathered may be insufficiency. This may lead
to implausible conclusions and erroneous findings. It is almost impossible to obtain
comprehensive data within a single survey. Some researchers may also reveal their findings
inarticulately which also leads to controversies. The main issue for qualitative research is how to
generate data without physically being on-site, an obvious challenge brought about by COVID-19
and subsequent travel restrictions. There are some solutions, however, such as videoconferencing

(for example, Skype or Zoom) or even text-based instant messaging (WhatsApp or Telegram).
These can help ease the issues faced by interviews of focus groups.

A total of 15 grade-11 students in Daraga Human Resource Development Center survey


questionnaire were conducted through online by using mobile app (messenger). These online
solutions can help to collect data from large geographical areas, even outside of lock down
circumstances. Online surveys are also a good way of sourcing qualitative data, although the data
generated tends to be less rich and in-depth than one-on-one interviews. The research instrument
in this study will be an open-ended survey guide questionnaire. During the formulation of
questions for survey, the researchers were assisted by their thesis adviser. The researchers chose
survey questionnaire as their research instrument since everyone is in the midst of pandemic. A
questionnaire survey is only appropriate for certain research questions. Its suitability depends on
the types of information needed to answer a research question and the people from whom the
researcher wants to elicit information. The researchers made the survey guide questions which
were based on the researcher questions since the study is qualitative in form. For analyzing the
data gathered by the researcher the findings shows that the respondents had a different
perspective in answering the question. Words, phrases that appeared to be similar will be grouped
into the same category. These categories will gradually be replaced and re-evaluated to determine
how they are response in a certain question. In essence, the analysis will involve extracting
significant statements from the transcribed survey questionnaire so that key phrases and
statements that response directly to the phenomenon in question could be extracted.

Some students had the same idea but most of them provide their own thoughts in expressing their
feelings of what they can say about the question. The survey also explored how Senior High
School students were affected by the difficulties in conducting research. For the 15 respondents
100% of them find difficulties in conducting research in midst of pandemic. This pandemic is
leading us all to reflect on how we do things. Researchers should take time to pause and reflect on
whether data collection can be postponed. For example, if you’re doing a PhD you could focus on
desk-based aspects of the research (e.g. literature reviewing, writing up a section of the thesis).
However, some students (e.g. Masters students) may not have this luxury and in the mid to longer
term we may want to consider how we can conduct qualitative research at a physical distance.
Many things about how we work may change because of this crisis and how we conduct
qualitative research may well be one of them. To conclude, the researcher propose
recommendation to the various sector for able to face the new normal process in conducting
research amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Conducting research is a broad concept required in

almost every field to improve performance and quality of work. Research is importance to build a
better understanding, decision making and, discerning and analytical ideas to facilities better
results.

Background and Problem of the study

The Covid-19 crisis is affecting the way that we work and we’re all learning how to work
more remotely. It may also affect the way we go about conducting research. Many researchers are
having to suspend data collection or re-design their projects taking into account social-distancing
measures. This has changed the way we do almost everything. There is significant hope that this
is temporary, but while we continue to live under various lockdowns and restrictions, how can we
carry out research that ensures the safety of the participants and researchers above all else?

Much qualitative research typically relies on face-to-face interaction for data collection
through interviews, focus groups and field work. But there are myriad ways researchers and
students can collect qualitative data online or gather textual data that already exists. The Covid19
outbreak prompted a downward break of world economy and causes a massive impact on
Education Institution. In response to the aforementioned situation, we acknowledge the New
Normal Learning System of Education as adhering to the new virus-fighting protocols. Thus, it is
weakening researchers' capacity to run convectional research operation; it intensely challenges
researchers to pursue their research by new approaches as soon as practicable, transforming
research that formerly look place in person into virtual operations. The sudden half of face-to-
face classes hinders the students to conduct research in person. "The research that will be affected
first are studies that involves bringing groups of people together in close proximity," (Zack's,
n.d.).

Citing the traditional way of conducting research, it needs an actual presence or personal
effort of students appropriately in finding respondents, face-to-face interview, group discussion,
consultation to the professor and most specially finding primary and secondary sources in
libraries. Library archives are known as the primary sources for storing and retaining historical
documentation that historians often use in the development of their study.

However, due to the tangible health threat of Covid19 it became a hindrance to the
students to conduct the face-to-face operations. Furthermore, it raises concern about transferring
the same amount of quality research conducted traditionally to the current remote system. While
recognizing the need to transition, there is still uncertainty about how to carry out a new approach
to provide quality research.

Any research is associated with certain limitations. Thus, the number of participants and
amount of information gathered may be insufficient. This may lead to implausible conclusions
and erroneous findings (McKay, 2007). Admittedly, it is almost impossible to obtain
comprehensive data within a single survey. It is necessary to conduct several surveys to acquire
the necessary amount of data. It is necessary to note that some researchers do not understand the
importance of thorough analysis and comprehensive data and tend to obtain quite an insufficient
amount of information. This explains the number of surveys that provide contradictory data. This
adds controversy to the research. Admittedly, this negatively affects the accumulation and sharing
of knowledge.

Lockdowns and restrictions resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic have produced a
number of ethical challenges for research, that should be considered carefully. Briefly these
issues can be grouped into consent, the interview/focus group setting, and risk management.

Consent – Obtaining informed written consent using remote technologies can be


problematic when you are not able to obtain a physical signature or discuss the process face to
face. To overcome this, consent forms could be sent, discussed, and returned via email. Oral
consent could be considered, particularly if it’s possible to record it. This would need to be
outlined during the ethical clearance process.

Setting – participating in online research, remotely, has been found to blur the
participants understanding of the setting, in some circumstances making them ‘forget’ the
research context within which the conversation is taking place, particularly when people are
inside their own homes. While this offers rich data gathering opportunities, it also makes it more
important to remind them that they are being interviewed and/or recorded. Some research
participants have admitted surprise about how open they were during online interviews rather
than in a more formal face to face setting. Remembering also that there may also be privacy
issues related to participants and facilitators carrying out research from within their own homes,
or potentially public spaces.

Risk – Ensuring that all researchers keep themselves and their participants safe, do not
take unnecessary risks or feel in any way obligated to do so is vital to all research, but most
especially in current circumstances. A robust participatory risk management process is essential
including the perspectives of everyone involved, not just that of the researchers based in the
country that is leading the research. Finding ways to ensure open communication about risk
management between local researchers on the ground and the rest of the team is crucial.

Researchers identified the following practical issues and solutions relating to carrying out
research during Covid-19:

Contact. Levels of contact with participants will vary. If research is continuing in an area
where research has previously been carried out, remote contacts should already be in place.
Alternatively, it may be possible to work through community mobilisers, including some capacity
building. If research in an area is completely new, identifying and working with new community
mobilisers may require some initial face to face contact but this would at least minimize contacts.

Connectivity. Getting access to a strong enough internet connection to carry out voice or
video calls is difficult. Research projects could divert travel funds to invest in improved internet
connections for local researchers, research organizations and participants.

Communication. Communicating through voice calls and video calls makes research
really difficult, compared to face-to-face contact. Using voice-notes to follow-up and continue
communication with participants after an interview or focus group discussion has been a useful
way to continue research and build relationships and trust.

Additional workload. All the potential changes to research discussed here involve
additional workload. This extra work may fall to country-based teams. We need to make sure that
all team members are supported and compensated appropriately and that nobody is placed under
even more stress because of the research.

Apart from the analysis of insufficient data, conducting research is also associated with
certain biases. Creswell (2008) states that some researchers may put inadequate or vague
questions. This distorts data as participants tend to understand such questions differently. Some
researchers may also reveal their findings inarticulately which also leads to a lot of controversies
(Creswell, 2008). Researchers may use inappropriate statistical tools which also results in
distorted data and controversial conclusions (Opdenakker, 2006). Besides, it is impossible to
ensure unbiased research as researchers have a certain background that affects the way they
perceive information. More so, some researchers do not focus on the unbiased presentation of
data, which also adds controversy to the research.

Scope and Delimitation

The pros and cons of conducting research amidst the COVID-19 pandemic by senior high
school students were investigated in this research. The purpose of this study is to determine the
advantages and disadvantages of conducting research during a pandemic. Also, to know the
importance of doing research, especially given that we are in the midst of a pandemic. The
researcher will undertake an open-ended question as part of qualitative research that happen by
giving a questionnaire to the respondent through mobile app (messenger). Out of fifty-eight (58)
grade 11 TVL track students of Daraga Human Resource Development Center, fifteen (15)
students were used as a sample in conducting the survey.

This study limits its coverage to some of the grade 11 Senior high school students only.
The other students, who do not fall under the grade 11 senior high school students that were used
as a sample in conducting the survey, such as regular TVET, TWSP, and grade 12 Senior high
school students, are not within the scope of this study.

Statement of the Problem

Students are aware that as a Senior High School students conducting research is one of the
trials for them in order to be ready before entering in college and also to improve and build their
talents and skills for solving any problem. But in this current situation pandemic brought a
challenge to every researcher that conduct research during the pandemic.

Significance of the Study

This study will be conducted to find out the advantages and disadvantages of conducting
research amidst the COVID-19 pandemic by Senior High School students. The research will
benefit the various sectors as follows:

DepEd- This study will help them to have a background knowledge about factors affecting the
researcher in conducting research.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS- In the future, researchers can gain significance from this study. It
may serve as their guidance to gather information, and it may serve them as a building block to
have a bigger study.

RESEARCHERS- This can help the researcher acquire more knowledge and improve their skills
and strategy in research.

STUDENTS- This study may serve as a guide and reference for the students undertaking similar
studies.

TEACHERS- This research will aid them in their discussion regarding related lessons. It will be
easier for them to tackle topics based on this research.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Adhering- To act in the way that is required by (something, such as a rule, belief, or promise).

Cons- In favor of a proposition, opinion, a proponent of an issue; a person who upholds the
affirmative in a debate. an argument, consideration, vote, etc., against for something.

Controversies- A lot of discussion and argument about something, often involving strong
feelings of anger or disapproval.

Erroneous- Basically means "containing errors", and, since most of us are constantly suffering
from mistaken notions.

Hindrance- The state of being interfered with, held back, or slowed down. Something that makes
it more difficult for you to do something or for something to develop.

Inadequate- Lacking the quality or quantity required, insufficient for a purpose.

Inarticulately- Incapable of giving coherent, clear, or effective expression to one's ideas or
feelings.

Insufficient- Not enough in amount, strength, or quality; less than is needed.

Implausible- (of an argument or statement) not seeming reasonable or probable; failing to


convince.

Phenomenon- A fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose cause
or explanation is in question.

Postponed- Cause or arrange for (something) to take place at a time later than that first
scheduled.

Pros- An argument or consideration in favor of something. In favor of a proposition, opinion, etc.


noun, plural pros. a proponent of an issue; a person who upholds the affirmative in a debate. an
argument, consideration, vote, etc., for something.

Qualitative research- Qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data
(e.g., text, video, or audio) to understand concepts, opinions, or experiences. It can be used to
gather in-depth insights into a problem or generate new ideas for research.

Questionnaire- A questionnaire is a research instrument that consists of a set of questions or


other types of prompts that aims to collect information from a respondent. A research
questionnaire is typically a mix of close-ended questions and open-ended questions.

Tangible- Real and not imaginary; able to be shown, touched, or experienced.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents related literature and studies which significantly contributed to
further deepen the understanding of the study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Neville (2007) state that research is a remarkable characteristics of any degree course
because it provides students with amount of control and independence on what they learn,
Research also offers students a chance to approve, explain, follow and find out new features of a
topic they are keen on. Pandey and Mishra (2015, p.7) suggest that the word “Research” is
comprised of two words= Re+search. It means to react again. So, research means a systematic
investigation or activity to gain new knowledge of the already existing facts. Research can also be
defined as rational and methodical search for new and beneficial information about a certain topic
(Rajasekar, Philominathan, & Chinnathambi, 2013). Neville (2007, p.1) defines research as “a
process of enquiry and investigation; it is systematic, methodical and ethical; research can help
solve practical problems and increase knowledge”.

Conducting qualitative research during the pandemic as in other areas of society,


conducting research amidst Covid 19 pandemic requires adaptation, while ensuring the quality of
research is maintained. Overseeing high quality qualitative research is challenging because
quality standards depend on the paradigm in which the inquiry is based, the proposed research
strategy, and the object of interest (Sparks& Smith, 2009). As such, some researchers judge
qualitative research quality based on adherence to a set of criteria and standards ( e.g., the
consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research [SROR]; Reditto , 2018), while others new
quality as a phenomenon that cannot be strictly attached to methodological rules (Sparkes&
Smith, 2009). Although there is debate with regard to the use standards or alternative methods to
judge quality, there is an informal consensus around the fact that consideration must be given to
clarify of the research question, the rigorousness of the research method and the transparency and
completeness of the process (O'B Rien et al., 2014). Similarly trust in the research process is
established when the researchers demonstrate an alignment between the different components of

the research process, including its epistemology, theory, methodology and methods (Morse,
2015).

Taking a reflexive stance (i.e., engaging in active reflection and disclosure of how and
why the researcher comes to certain decisions) is important to ensure trustworthiness. For
example, in an ordinary qualitative research endeavor, extensive and intensive in field time and
proximity between participants and researchers are considered key to a trustworthy rendering of
complex human phenomenon. However, both elements are impeded in the present COVID-19
context due to the urgent need to respond to the pandemic with empirical data and the physical
distancing measures implemented on an international scale (Sandars& Goh ,2020). Below we
present our reflection on how qualitative research can be conducted with these considerations in
mind. To extend previous literature discussing the use of qualitative research in the context of this
pandemic. We.-(a) identified two major challenges stemming from COVID 19 associated
measures- "time constraints" and "physical distancing",. That may both threaten qualitative
research standards; and (b) discussed potential methodological venues to face the challenges and
ensure high quality research standards; and (c) the major advantages and disadvantages in
conducting research.

Time constraints

Pressure to produce time-sensitive responses to the pandemic has brought about


international collaboration on several projects in order to fast-track massive research . Such
research endeavors developed to generate information in a short window of time required faster
design, recruitment of participants and data collection and analysis ( Lancaster et al ,. 2020). This
scenario seems to go against both traditional and conservative qualitative research standards that
typically required an extended period of time to capture the nature of the phenomenon under
study ( Denzin& Lincoln, 2018).

In response to time constraints, rapid qualitative research initiatives have recently gained
popularity as they have been shown to produce high quality information used to inform decision-
making (Johnson &Vindrola-Padros, 2017). Rapid qualitative research is an approach aiming to
illuminate a given problem by collecting and analyzing data within a short period of time, ranging
from 4-5 days to 6 weeks (Beebe, 2014). Such an approach not only results in time reduction, but
also in a closer and intense analysis of data leading to a potential decrease of required costs and
resources (Watkins, 2017). To that end, different strategies such as "mirror studies" that replicate
and apply methodology in the study of sub-cases can enhance and facilitate epidemic related

responses and experiences. As well, the data analysis techniques use for the purposes of rapid
qualitative research were studied by Taylor and Colleagues (2018) who compared them with
generic thematic analysis. After measuring the time needed to complete the two types of analysis,
as well as the congruence between the themes identified by each analytic strategy, the scholars
confirmed that while the final findings overlapped in around 70% the completion of rapid
analysis required 26.5 less hours.

Despite the benefits, certain aspects of rapid qualitative research have been questioned.
Methodologically speaking, time is save by eliminating certain aspects of the research process
(e.g,. Verbatim transcription of interviews, reduction of the natural Pace of group discussion, and
the additional time burden on the research team and participants (Johnson &Vindrola-Padros,
2017). However, these shortcuts might hinder the exploration and portrayal of complex human
and social phenomena and therefore produced.

Advantage and disadvantages

One of the major advantages of conducting research is the chance to participate in a


broader discussion of particular issues. With the help of research, people accumulate knowledge,
and each researcher adds to his/her knowledge (Creswell, 2008). Every educator research specific
issue he/she encounters. It is necessary to note that research is based on data. Therefore, educators
do not only share their opinions, but they provide specific data which justify their conclusions or
refute some theories. Accumulation of knowledge is of paramount importance for educators as it
helps them develop efficient tools to address existing issues and even force see upcoming
problems.

Another advantages of conducting research are that it provides practitioners with tools to
address their issues. Creswell, (2008, p.4) stresses that research "suggests improvements for
practice". Therefore, educators (as well as practitioners in other fields) may find many effective
solutions to their problems or develop new tools to address issues. Admittedly, this positively
affect the development of every field as sharing particular tools to help practitioners develop their
strategies to address a variety of issues (McKay, 2007). Thus, Koshy (2005) notes that the use of
action research enables practitioners (specially novice educators) to outline an issue and develop
specific strategies to address it. In other words, educators outline problems and solutions
applicable in particular situation.

Another important advantages in conducting research is that it can be generalized and


transformed into policies that can be applicable and beneficial in a variety of situations. Creswell

(2008) claims that the ongoing debate and several tools provided by practitioners enable policy
makers to come up with appropriate policies which will positively affect the entire system.
Therefore, it is possible to note that conducting research helps a practitioners be aware of the
ongoing debate on issues, it also help educators develop particular tools to address every issue to
the fore and help policy makers work out effective strategies which may make difference.

As has been mentioned, conducting research is also associated with disadvantages. It is


necessary to note that the disadvantages do not belittle the importance of conducting research.
However, it is necessary to understand these disadvantages to be able to diminish the negative
effects of this limitations on particular research. One of the major disadvantages is the amount of
time necessary for conducting research. Creswell (2008) claims that accumulating knowledge
often takes a lot of time. Some research requires years to obtain the necessary amount of
information to come up with a plausible solution. This is a significant disadvantage as the
contemporary world is rapidly changing and it is important to react quickly to the changing
circumstances. Data analyzed and generalized may become outdated and inapplicable.

Being a practitioner, we understand that research will help us gained on a variety of


topics. It will also help us find new ways to handle problems. We will be able to learn more about
solutions found by others. This will enable us to adjust these solutions to situations. Admittedly,
this will positively affect our development as a practitioner. However, we also understand that we
will face certain difficulties as conducting research has several disadvantages. We will have to
invest a lot of time as conducting research is a very time-consuming activity. We will need to
collect enough data to be able to analyze information and come to some conclusions. We will also
be attentive when using data revealed by other researchers as we will need to evaluate each
survey. We will have to be attentive when implementing our research and analyzing data as we
must remained unbiased. Thus, understanding the importance of conducting research and its
limitations we will be able to develop as a practitioner and contribute to the development of
certain areas.

Problems Faced by Learners in Writing Research

The task of writing research is not a simple one as it involves hard work and effort. It also
needs much time and good background knowledge. When it comes to students, there are many
obstacles they encounter during research. One of the biggest challenges is the lack of resources in
the library. Students spend their time searching for the books they need but most of the time they
do not find what they want. Hence, this tends to delay the completion of their project and make

them less encouraged to proceed in their work. According to Taskeen, Shehzadi, Khan, and
Saleem (2014) the library is not organized systematically, and students spend most of their
valuable time searching for books and reports instead of looking for related information from
these books. Some catalogues in the library are not available and researchers find data related to
their topic by looking at each item one by one which wastes the researchers' time and make it
very hard for them to focus on the basic theme of the research. Baldwin (2005) argues that most
students encounter some hindrances when doing research such as issues related to ethics,
knowing how to invest the time required and finding resources they need.

Among the difficulties that students have is their difficulty to express themselves in their
own words. So, they copy from other works and represent it as their own writing without
acknowledging the sources. Furthermore, some students do not have any background in research.
Taskeen et al. (2014) state that majority of novice researchers copy related studies and some
advisors do not have enough experience in different methodologies. Thus, they allow their
students to copy from studies which are conducted by other researchers. Moreover, most learners
are hesitant in selecting a topic and they take a lot of time for that. This can be attributed to a lack
of training in research, less confidence about the topic they want to write about and not reading
widely. Thus, selecting a topic is not easy because the student’s researchers are not very aware of
how to choose a topic and on what standards or basis, they have to select it. Hence, choosing a
topic depends on the researchers' interests in the field of study that he/ she intends to write about
because of insufficient or no experience and inadequate background about selecting their topic,
the students spend most of the time selecting useless and uninteresting topics. (Taskeen et al.
2014).

In conducting research, students may face problems with their supervisor. For example,
they may not know who to select and after some time they tend to change their supervisors for
unknown reasons. In addition, some supervisors may not be interested in working with students
who choose less interesting topics or students who are not active and not motivated to cooperate
with his/ her supervisor. Some supervisors do not frequently follow up with the students because
they are not available all the time. Another obstacle is that when students ask for help or advice
from the supervisor, the supervisor does not always offer or give any help or direction. As a
result, he/ she lets the students work most of the time on his/ her own without even having a look
at the students' work. And even if they give any comments some students find it difficult to
understand and meet the requirements

Some students do not know how to write their project and most of the time they depend
on their supervisor to do the work for them. All these problems make it very hard for learners to
conduct good research and he or she will end up with a very poor piece of work. According to
Nyawaranda (2005), Shumba (2004), Chabaya, Chiome and Chabaya (2009) and Pearce (2005),
some learners encounter hindrances with their advisor when writing their research. Some of these
obstacles include supervisors do not see their students regularly, the supervisors are not interested
in their students, they do not return the students' work on time, and they do not give the students
much practical help.

Concerning the gathering information from different sources, students face some
difficulties. One of these challenges is that the internet is not always accessible to some students.
When the students need some more sources for the research, he/she usually uses the internet, but
they cannot find anything because of the slow and weak internet connection at home and which
delays the completion of their research. Students also encounter some challenges with regard to
such as unavailability for the internet, students are not exposed to computers and there is a lack of
materials related to research. Furthermore, some supervisors impose topics on their students
which in turn influence their interest and success in writing a research paper (Mawere & Weda,
2011). Other problems related to students include not enough time, lack of or not adequate
resources in the library, little or no motivation in writing research, not meeting the supervisor
every time, not having any knowledge about theory related to research (Bell, 2000; Pearce, 2005;
Sidhu, 2001; Anderson, Day, & McLaughlin, 2006; Aspland, Edwards, O'Leary, & Ryan, 1999).

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

In the study of Parya Saberi (2019) entitled “Research in the Time of Coronavirus:
Continuing ongoing Studies in the Midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic” she concludes that there is
a need to continue research activities, while keeping research participants and staff safe. Aligning
research activities with remotely conducted research methodology has the potential benefits of
reducing time and cost for conducting the study, improving ease of participation for many
individuals, enhancing the generalizability of findings, and increasing the speed of publication of
study findings, all while preventing potential viral transmissions to research participants or staff.

Even without a pandemic, over 19% of trials close without meeting target accrual rates,
underscoring the need to investigate new methods for research recruitment. Reports from the Pew
Research Center show 95%, 90%, and 82% of individuals ages 13–17, 18–29 years, and 30–49,

respectively, use some form of social media. This indicates a wide reach for online advertisement
and recruitment for research, with the added potential to recruit populations typically considered
hard-to-reach.

Compared to traditional recruitment methods (e.g. print and television), studies using
advertisements via social media have been shown to be financially feasible, attract large numbers
of individuals, and have condensed recruitment periods. They have also been shown to provide
opportunities for connecting with individuals with specific health conditions, living in remote
geographic locations, or who may have been difficult to recruit due to stigma or medical mistrust.
Some examples of social media to advertise and recruit participants include: social networks
(such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter), dating apps (Grindr, Scruff, and Jack’d), and online
listservs for various medical societies or health conditions. The main disadvantage of using social
media for study recruitment is the lack of reach to those with limited or no internet access. This
can result in reduced generalizability of research findings. Researchers concerned about
generalizability, however, can supplement online advertisement with traditional methods.

Screening (or pre-screening) can be conducted via simple web forms on a study website.
This can increase web traffic to the study website, decrease the workload for research staff, and
increase a potential participant’s trust in the legitimacy of the study (e.g. if the webpage is part of
a reputable university with an “edu” domain). The main disadvantage of online screening is that it
may either deter some to participate (e.g. if the form is too complicated or lengthy) or increase
inappropriate participation (e.g. an individual or bot responding repeatedly to be eventually
deemed eligible). One option to minimize these barriers is to include a simple pre-screening form
on the study website and to contact the interested individual by phone call or text message to
complete the screening process.

Another study conducted by Roza Sakellaropoulou (2020) entitled “Research in the time
of a pandemic: The researcher's role in shaping policy and communicating with the public.” She
pointed that the research community has the expertise and the means to filter the quality and
relevance of information and convey to the public what is worthy of attention. In fact, more than
ever, it is the obligation of the research community to be vigilant and vocal and prevent such
misinformation from spreading so widely that influence public perception and result in difficulty
of acceptance of mitigation or other measures taken by the governments. This of course is even
more important, when misinformation relating to non-credible or dangerous “treatment”

solutions, or inferences about the evolution of the pandemic are being spread by individuals in
“credible” positions.

In the study of Adam Jowett (2020) entitled "Carrying out qualitative research under
lockdown – Practical and ethical considerations" he outlines several techniques researchers can
use to collect data without face-to-face contact with participants. Bringing together a number of
previous studies, he also suggests such techniques have their own methodological advantages and
disadvantages and that while these techniques may appear particularly apt during the coronavirus
crisis, researchers should take time to reflect on ethical issues before re-designing their studies.
He pointed that this pandemic is leading us all to reflect on how we do things.
Researchers should take time to pause and reflect on whether data collection can be postponed.
For example, if you’re doing a PhD you could focus on desk-based aspects of the research (e.g.
literature reviewing, writing up a section of the thesis). However, some students (e.g. Masters
students) may not have this luxury and in the mid to longer term we may want to consider how
we can conduct qualitative research at a physical distance. Many things about how we work may
change as a result of this crisis and how we conduct qualitative research may well be one of
them.

CHAPTER Ⅲ

METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY

This chapter reveals the methods of research to be employed by the researcher in


conducting the study which includes the research design, sources of the data, population of the
study, research instrument, and the data gathering procedure.

Research Design

This study was made by the means of qualitative methods of researcher. The researcher
attempted to get the answers to the aforementioned problem and to justify and satisfy the
objectives of the study.

According to Denzin and Lincoln (1994, p. 2) qualitative research is multi-method in


focus, involving an interpretative, naturalistic approach to its subject matter. This means that
qualitative researchers study things in their natural setting, attempting to make sense of, or
interpret, phenomena in terms of the meaning people bring to them. Qualitative research involves
the studied use and collection of a variety of empirical materials case study, personal experience,
introspective, life story, interview, observational, historical, interactional, and visual texts that
describe routine and problematic moments and meaning in individuals’ lives.

The researchers decided to utilize qualitative design for the study entails to determine and
know the pros and cons in conducting research amidst Covid-19 pandemic in Senior high school
students. In doing so, a set of questionnaires will devise to obtain data needed by researchers. It
will seek to know and describe the profile of grade 11 students along with their age and sex.

Source of data

This study will utilize two sources of data: the primary and secondary data. The primary
data will source out from all the responses of the respondents from the questionnaire that the
researcher made which were based on the research questions since the study is qualitative in
form. The main objective was obtained complete and through information of the perception and
ideas of the participants. Open-ended type of questions was constructed in order for the
respondents to fully answer the questions. Consent will be then sought from the respondents,
while the secondary data will be generated from all the literature and studies from an unpublished
thesis and internet resources.

The overall population of the study will be the fifteen (15) grade 11 students undertake
TVL track at Daraga Human Resource Development Center.

Research Instrument

The questionnaire was used as the main data-gathering instrument. The instrument to be
prepared focused on answering the statement of the problem. The questionnaires will be
distributed to the respondent that contains of eight (8) questions.

In the preparation of the instrument, the requirements in the designing of good data
collection instrument were considered. For instance, statement describing the situation or issues
pertaining was toned down to accommodate the knowledge preparedness of the respondents.
Open-ended options were provided to accommodate to free formatted views related to the topics
or issues. In this way, the instrument is authorized to obtain valid responses of the students.

Data Gathering Procedures

The data gathering process will commence right after the approval of the title. The
researcher will start gathering the secondary source of data for the literature and study both
foreign and local. After finalization and approval of the research instrument on the statement of
the problem, the preparation of the survey tool will be done. They submitted the questionnaire to
the adviser for editing and other suggestions. The said questionnaire was crafted by the
researchers themselves and conducted a dry run to validate the questionnaire. The researchers
asked for approval from the subject teacher to pursue the study.

A survey questionnaire is the main instrument of the study. The questionnaire is


composed of questions about the pros and cons in conducting research amidst Covid-19 pandemic
by Senior high school students. The researcher will be guided by the following guideline in
conducting the survey:

Asking permission to conduct the survey, the researchers will inform the student that they
are going to conduct a survey.

Conducting a survey, a list of questionnaires will be given by the researchers through


mobile app (messenger). The purpose of the survey will be fully explained, and the respondents
will be assured of the confidentiality of their responses. The survey will be done in an informal
manner, a conversational type with the guide questions as basis to allow the degree of freedom
and adaptability in getting the information from the respondents.

Chapter V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter provides the summary of the findings from chapter four, and also it gives the
conclusions and recommendations of the study based on the objectives of the study. The objective
of this study was to know the advantages and disadvantages that affecting the researchers in
conducting research in time of pandemic. Out of fifty-eight (58) grade 11 TVL track students of
Daraga Human Resource Development Center, six (6) CSS Students, four (4) Automotive
Students, two (2) Dress Making Students, two (2) Cookery Students, and one (1) Electronics
Students with the total of fifteen (15) grade 11 students of Daraga Human Resource Development
Center were the participant in the survey.

Summary of Findings

The researchers focus on the pros and cons in conducting research amidst covid 19
pandemic by a senior high school student. To sum up all of the difference from our 15
respondents’. The researchers identify the responds of 15 respondents in the way of giving
questionnaire through mobile app (messenger).

In question number 1. Out of our 15 respondent's 14 respondent answered yes that is


equivalent to 93.33% while the other 1 is reply a no that had a 6.67% for the total of 100%. It
seems that almost the respondents are already conduct research. For the question no.2 researcher
give an open-ended question that need to be address by the respondents that required to answer
the question openly by expressing their feelings and own thoughts. In question number 3, there
are 100% students who said yes, in their reason researcher discover that the respondents find
difficulties in conducting research amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the table in
question no.4 students who answered a “lack of time” consist of 13.33% of 2 respondent. For
“facing challenges and difficulties in conducting research” and “no gadget and unstable network”
there are only one respondent for categories who reply to this kind of answer. 14 out of 15
respondents consist of 93.33% Senior High School students believe that even though everyone
affects this current pandemic research should be required to undertake research, especially given
amidst the pandemic. The respondents’ reasons preceding with their answer that needed in a
question. The next three question also provided an open-ended question that required a participant
to answer in their own words. Respondents can provide more information than a simple yes of no
answer. Those question enable participants to add their thoughts and opinions instead of choosing
from a list of answer.

Conclusion

In these times of economic crises, conducting surveys can be an effective tool to gauge
the exact impact of the situation, like Covid-19, on Senior High School students. Mandated social
distancing and lockdowns have made physical surveys a challenge, and these physical limitations
are likely to remain in place for an ideal alternative. Researchers are working to design surveys
that are easy and short, so they do not put undue stress on respondents.

Conducting research amidst Covid-19 pandemic brought advantages and disadvantages


on researchers. Research is a data gathering procedure which means collecting data. Conducting
research during pandemic has a lot of advantages like it provides practitioner with tools to
address their issues. Another important advantages in conducting research are that it can be
generalized and transformed into policies that can be applicable and beneficial in a variety of
situations. As has been mentioned, conducting research is also associated with disadvantages. It is
necessary to understand these disadvantages to be able to diminish the negative effects of this
limitations on particular research. One of the major disadvantages is the amount of time necessary

We understand that research will help us gained on a variety of topics. It will also help us find
new ways to handle problems. This will enable us to adjust these solutions to situations.

However, we also understand that we will face certain difficulties as conducting research
has several disadvantages. We will have to invest a lot of time as conducting research is a very
time-consuming activity. We will need to collect enough data to be able to analyze information
and come to some conclusions. We will also be attentive when using data revealed by other
researchers as we will need to evaluate each survey. We will have to be attentive when
implementing our research and analyzing data as we must remained unbiased. Thus,
understanding the importance of conducting research and its limitations we will be able to
develop as a practitioner and contribute to the development of certain areas. Therefore,
conducting research amidst pandemic can be both advantage and disadvantage, and the best way
to collect information and data is through the use of online process.

Keeping surveys precise and concise is the rule of thumb, regardless of the scenario when
conducting it. Even though people may have mor time to answer questions as they are
quarantining or working from, generally, people don’t want to spend more than ten minutes on
filling the surveys. That means this general rule of ‘precise and concise’ surveys remains
applicable even during the pandemic. Make sure that questions are spot-on, short and properly

structured to help the researchers to get maximum information from the participants. Social
distancing and health protocols have made in-person interviews, surveying and focus groups
difficult if not impossible to conduct, but these are not only means to collect data. Due to a
mobile survey application provide researchers with a critical tool to collect data from the
respondents. Not only is this new method quicker but is often more cost-effective.

It is the most valuable tool to understand the complexities of a problem, disapprove lies,
uphold truth and build on to create knowledge that is reliable and authentic. Conducting research
develops a better understanding and enhances decision-making capabilities. Understanding the
problem and for decision making, it is important to know facts observed and explored through
research for better results and not relying on imagination or intuition to fade the quality of the
work. Research prompts decisions making and develops a better understanding to solve the
problems.

Recommendations

After through assessment and considering the foregoing findings and conclusion of the study, the
following recommendations are presented.

1. The teachers may do counseling with their students to learn the situation and to identify and
take effective measures to combat conducting research amidst Covid-19 pandemic problem of
students. The teachers may give considerations in terms of giving assignment and activities and
setting deadlines.

2. The teachers and the institution may also come up with more suitable techniques and
methodology to meet the demands and challenges of the students in conducting research. Students
study behavior and learning processes should receive more attention from the beginning until the
end of their studies. In addition, students’ well-being should be the focus of institution.

3. Educational institutions may consider providing self-care promotion and mental health
promotion program to nurture self-care and positivity of the students, and time management
training to provide the students time management skills, as well as student-teacher counseling for
students to learn how to reach out and ask for help.

MORE RECOMMENDATIONS:

1. The institution may utilize this study as basis for consideration to make the necessary changes
in the curriculum, along with the provision of better support counseling services for the students.

The institution may plan ways to improve more in conducting research for the betterment of the
students.

2. Students should learn how to separate their personal lives from their academic life.
Respondents suggest that students may ask help when things are not really going well.

3.The parents should support and help their child through the conducting research by lessening
their chores/responsibilities at home and by allowing them to do what they want.

4. DepEd can use this study that will help them to have a background knowledge about factors
affecting the students in conducting research.

5. The study will give the researcher a fruitful feeling of a fulfilment as this study offers and give
a significant contribution in conducting research amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
