EXPERIMENT NO:
EXPERIMENT NAME: DETERMINATION OF PENETRATION OF
                      BITUMEN
Introduction: The penetration of bitumen is the distance in tenths of a
millimeter that a standard needle penetrates vertically into a sample of the
materials under fixed conditions. Fixed condition means specified load,
temperature and time. This test method covers determinations of the penetration
into bitumen. Materials having penetration below 350 can be tested by the
standard apparatus. Materials having penetration between 350-500 can be
determined using the special apparatus.
The penetration test is used as a measure of consistency higher values of
penetration indicate softer consistency.
Objective: To determine the consistency of bitumen.
Materials: Bitumen.
Apparatus:
 (i) Penetrometer
(ii) Needle
(iii) Water bath
(iv) stop watch
(v) Thermometer
(vi) container
(vii) Heater
(ix) 100gm load.
Procedure:
(i) Penetration needle is cleaned with benzene, dried with a clean cloth. Needle
is inserted into the penetrometer & USE 100gm load.
(ii) Sample is taken is container and placed on the base of penetrometer
(iii) The needle with the specified weight is lowered up to just contact with
surface of sample.
(iv)The reading of the dial gauge is noted.
(v) The needle is released quickly and permitted for penetration for 5 sec into
bitumen.
(vi)The penetration is measured from dial gauge.
(vii) Repeat the test for 5 times.
(viii) If we use 50gm loading instead of 100gm then. Penetration under 100gm
load = (Penetration under 50gm load) × 1.4142
