HEART FAILURE
Heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure, is a condition that develops when your
heart doesn't pump enough blood for your body's needs.
SYMPTOMS
SHORTNESS OF BREATH
In Heart Failure: Often occurs due to fluid buildup in the lungs (pulmonary congestion), which
impairs the ability to breathe effectively. It can happen during physical activity or even at
rest.
CHEST PAIN
In Heart Failure: Not always a primary symptom, but chest pain can occur if heart failure is
associated with coronary artery disease or a heart attack.
HEART PALPITATIONS
In Heart Failure: Palpitations can occur as the heart tries to compensate for its decreased
pumping efficiency. They might feel like a racing, fluttering, or irregular heartbeat.
FULL (BLOATED) OR HARD STOMACH
In Heart Failure: Fluid buildup can extend to the abdominal area, causing a sensation of
fullness or bloating. This is often due to congestion in the liver and intestines.
LOSS OF APPETITE OR UPSET STOMACH (NAUSEA).
Because blood is being moved away from your digestive system, your appetite may not be
as big as it usually is. You might also feel sick to your stomach.
TREATMENT & PREVENTION
STOP SMOKING
Impact: Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease and can exacerbate existing heart
conditions. It damages blood vessels, raises blood pressure, and reduces oxygen to the
heart.
AVOID TAKING ILLICIT DRUGS
Impact: Illicit drugs can have severe effects on heart health, including increasing the risk of
heart attacks, arrhythmias, and other cardiovascular problems. Drugs like cocaine and
methamphetamine can cause acute cardiac issues and long-term damage.
EXERCISE REGULARLY
Impact: Regular physical activity strengthens the heart muscle, improves circulation, helps
manage weight, and lowers blood pressure. It can also improve overall well-being and
reduce stress.
EAT HEALTHY FOODS
Impact: A heart-healthy diet helps manage cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and weight. It
also supports overall health and reduces the risk of heart disease.
MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT
Impact: Being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing heart disease, high
blood pressure, and diabetes, all of which can contribute to heart failure.
