Articles
STUDY
Explain to children that they use articles (a, an, the) all the time when they are speaking, and that it is difficult to write without them!
Show the ‘Articles’ ITR. Add your own example of a sentence using an article and explain why you wrote it.
Ask children:
• How has the writer made these two sentences different?
• Can you see why the writer has made the two sentences different?
Explain to children that the article an is used instead of a when a noun begins with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) and that this is done to make the
words run together smoothly when we say or read them. Show children examples of a and an in use on the ‘Articles’ ITR.
DISCUSS
• Has anyone used articles in their own writing?
• Can you find any examples of articles in your class reading books?
CREATE
Explain to children that they will be using articles in their writing during the lesson. Encourage children to think about which articles they
have used and why they have used them.
