What Are Psychological Disorders?

Psychological disorders, also known as mental disorders, are conditions that affect a person’s thinking, feeling, behavior, or mood. These
disruptions can impact daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Causes of Psychological Disorders:

The development of these disorders is complex and often influenced by multiple factors:

• Hereditary Influences: Mental health conditions can run in families, indicating a genetic predisposition passed from one generation to another.

• Environmental Influences: Experiences such as trauma, abuse, neglect, or prolonged stress can trigger or worsen mental health issues.

• Epigenetic Factors: These are changes in gene expression caused by both genetic vulnerability and environmental stress, showing how “wired”
and “wounded” factors can work together.

Examples of Common Psychological Disorders:

• Major Depressive Disorder

• Generalized Anxiety Disorder

• Bipolar Disorder

• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

• Schizophrenia

This presentation will further explore how these contributing factors often intersect, influencing both the onset and progression of
psychological disorders.

By examining these dimensions together, we aim to highlight the importance of early identification, individualized treatment approaches, and a
holistic understanding of mental health.

Through this lens, we can better appreciate how psychological disorders emerge and the critical need to address them from both biological and
experiential perspectives.
