Stories of Krishna

Engaging tales for all ages

Preface
Lord Krishna, the beloved deity of millions, is known for his divine plays (leelas) filled with wisdom,
love, and courage. From his miraculous birth to his fearless feats, each story carries timeless
lessons. This collection presents some of the most enchanting tales of Krishna, written to delight
readers of all ages.
The Birth of Krishna
In the city of Mathura, King Kansa's tyranny brought fear to all. A prophecy declared that Devaki's
eighth child would be his doom. Frightened, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and her husband Vasudeva.
One stormy night, the divine child Krishna was born. Vasudeva carried him across the raging
Yamuna to Gokul, where Nanda and Yashoda raised him in love and secrecy.

Makhan Chor – The Butter Thief

Little Krishna’s favorite pastime in Gokul was stealing butter from every home. His mischievous
smile, twinkling eyes, and clever tricks made him the most adored child in the village. Though
Yashoda often caught him with his hands in a butter pot, no one could truly be angry — for his
charm melted every heart.

The Defeat of Putana

The demoness Putana, sent by Kansa, disguised herself as a gentle woman and entered Gokul.
She offered baby Krishna her poisoned milk, but Krishna, knowing her true form, sucked away not
just the milk but her very life. Putana collapsed, and the villagers realized their little Krishna was no
ordinary child.

Taming Kaliya Naag

The Yamuna River was once poisoned by the multi-headed serpent Kaliya. When Krishna’s friends
lost their ball in the river, he dived in to retrieve it. Emerging atop Kaliya’s heads, Krishna danced
gracefully, subduing the serpent. Kaliya, humbled, promised to leave the river, restoring its purity.

Govardhan Leela
When the people of Vrindavan prepared to worship Lord Indra, Krishna suggested they instead
honor Govardhan Hill, which provided them with food and shelter. Enraged, Indra sent torrential
rains, but Krishna lifted the entire hill on his little finger, giving everyone shelter. Indra soon realized
Krishna’s divinity and apologized.

The Flute of Love

Krishna’s flute could enchant every living being. The gopis of Vrindavan would leave their chores
behind whenever they heard its sweet melody. Through his music, Krishna spread the message of
divine love and devotion, touching every heart that heard him.

Slaying Kansa
When Krishna grew older, he journeyed to Mathura to confront Kansa. In the grand wrestling arena,
he defeated Kansa’s strongest fighters and finally the tyrant himself. The prophecy was fulfilled, and
Mathura was freed from cruelty.
The Syamantaka Jewel
A precious jewel caused misunderstanding between Krishna and his people. Krishna set out to
clear his name, facing lions, warriors, and deceit. His courage and truthfulness restored trust,
proving that righteousness always prevails.

Krishna and Sudama

Krishna’s childhood friend Sudama lived in poverty but visited Krishna without expecting help.
Touched by his humility and love, Krishna blessed him with abundant prosperity, showing that true
friendship transcends wealth.

The Departure
In the end, Krishna’s earthly life came to a close in Dwarka. His departure marked the end of the
Dwapara Yuga. Yet his teachings, leelas, and love remain eternal, guiding devotees through the
ages.
