Taking a trip to the moon was one of the strangest experiences I’d ever had. It started when

metal disc on the floor. I found myself picking up it. On touching the metal disk, a strange thing
happened. I wasn’t in the classroom. I was hovering in the air. I could see the whole town. I

the disk. On it were the words: “Floating through the air, Like a balloon, your travels will not

stop, until you reach the moon.” Suddenly, I was standing on the moon. It was amazing! It
looked different than Earth. No trees, water, wind, or houses.
For each step I took I would bounce way up into the air. Every step I took left a huge footprint
in the dust. I had to be careful not to jump into a volcano. I was bounding over to something in
the distance that looked very out of place. When I got there, I realized it was a flag. On the flag
were the words: “To go to Earth, close your eyes and think of what you've learned.”
I decided to close my eyes and think of the weather and other characteristics of the moon.
When I opened my eyes I was sitting in my classroom. Miss Heba was turning on the lights

sweat in the heart of winter. What is it? It the common cold! Although everyone has had a cold,
most people don't understand what a cold is, what causes it or why it is so difficult for doctors
to cure.
Colds are caused by viruses. While bacteria can be studied under an ordinary light
microscope, the structure of viruses was a mystery until the invention of the electronic
microscope in the 1930s. Viruses cannot exist or function without the help of a living cell.
Animals, plants and even bacteria can be infected by viruses. Cold viruses are carried by small
droplets of water in the air. When you breathe in, these viruses are drawn in and infect the cells
of the throat- consequently, you catch a cold. Some viruses reach further down towards the
lungs and then the infection is likely to be more serious. The cells which line the throat produce
a sticky liquid (called , mucus). Infected cells produce a lot of mucus, so we have to sneeze
and cough to get it out.
Although there are many things you can buy to make you feel better, only time and your own
body will cure your cold. Moreover, there are many different sorts of cold virus. Antibiotics are
not always useful, because they kill bacteria rather than viruses; it is also very difficult to kill a
virus without also killing the living cell which is supporting it.

and this is very difficult. When everybody else is getting ready to go out, they have to go to
work, and this puts a lot of psychological stress on them. It is also not very healthy because the
human body is designed to be active in the day and to rest in the dark. If this cycle is changed,
it can have a bad effect on a person's health. So, why do people do night shift? Nowadays a lot
of jobs have to offer a 24-hour service, like hotels, delivery companies, some supermarkets
open all night and all day, call centers and hospitals. It is true that some people only need a
few hours of sleeping at night but the majority need between 6 and 8 hours. Humans are most
active in the middle of the day, and the time when they are least able to concentrate and be
efficient is between 2 am and 4 am.
This is the worst time to drive, or to do anything that needs concentration. The body finds it
very difficult to adapt to the opposite cycle. Things are not likely to get better in the future
because more and more business are working 24 hour cycles to keep in step with our 24-hour
society.

Fast food is food that is prepared and served quickly, typically in a store or a restaurant with
precook or preheated ingredients, then served to the customer in a carryout packaging. Today
you can find fast food restaurants in almost every big city. In some places you can stand in line
and get beef burger in a paper bag. In other places you can pick up a tray of fish, fried chicken,
pizza or even drive your car up to a window and place your order. A few minutes later, a
worker passes it to you and you can drive away.
But why do people prefer fast food restaurants to more comfortable restaurants? Two things
make fast food restaurants popular; speed and price. People may not have time to eat food.
The service is fast, so they can order what they want, eat it and finish it in less than fifteen
minutes. Also, prices are inexpensive because of the large number of meals sold every day in
fast food restaurants. Another thing people like is that they can be sure what the food will taste
in those restaurants.
Critics of fast food say that fast food is "Junk Food", as it is the food which is not healthy. It
contains too much salt, carbohydrates, fats and calories which may harm our health. Too much
fast food increases the risk of catching diseases. It also leads to weight gain. But one thing is
sure; people everywhere like fast food and they find it a convenient and economical way to eat.

It is a terrible fact that many different wild animals throughout the world are in danger. The
reasons for this are many and varied, but we must blame pollution, pesticides the disturbance
of animals and their natural environment and man’s greed.
Industry has grown enormously, and it has become common practice for factories to dispose
waste materials in streams and rivers, causing great loss of river life. Modern agricultural
methods include using pesticides which control insects classified as pests, but which also
destroy many that are not. An increase in population had meant more building which results in

the destruction of much of the countryside that provides shelter for wild animals. To satisfy
man’s selfish desires, the polar bear in North America is under threat, hunted by sportsmen.
Whales are killed for the oil and the food they yield. There are only a few of the species under
threat. But the problem is receiving world-wide recognition, and some actions are being taken.
For example, pollution in the River Thames has been greatly reduced, trading in some furs had

We know that the sun is a big sphere in our solar system. Ancient civilizations used energy
from the sun in a positive way. For example, they built their homes to face the rising sun as it
would be a source of heat and light. This is called passive solar energy as there’s not any
special equipment. The sun has a powerful influence on our lives. Life on Earth depends on
energy from the sun. Without the sun, plants wouldn’t be able to make food, animals wouldn’t
have food and the earth would be cold and uninhabited.
Over time, people have realized that the sun has useful solar energy. A French scientist called
August worried about Europe’s dependence on coal, so in 1860, he used sunlight to boil water
but he was not able to produce enough energy to have a substitute for coal. During a space
program, scientists made many advances on the area of solar energy, and today a space
station gets some of its power from solar cells.
Today, there is a great interest in solar energy as it is clean, renewable, less expensive, easily
stored and doesn’t harm the environment. However, oil is expensive, non-renewable and
limited. Coal also has harmful effects on the environment.
Scientists try to increase the amount of energy a solar cell can provide. You may have seen
solar panels on roofs, also you may have used calculators that have solar cells. Many cities
have special programs that focus on increasing solar energy use. However, using solar energy
to provide enough power for an entire city is not yet possible as making a solar power plant
requires a lot of land for panels.

3) Read the passage , then choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d:
Parents are the most important models for growing children; in fact the first influences on them.
First, parents are usually the earliest human contact the child has in the world. In the eyes of
the child, parents are by far the most powerful people. They influence the child through
providing his needs. In a word, his survival almost relies on them. Surely then, a child owes
much to these models for the development of his character. Perhaps this explains some of the
traditional sayings which suggest that the child looks like the parents.
Take the expression, "a chip off the old block", for example, which is often used to say that
there is a close similarity between the behaviour of the child and his parents'. It's logical that
the child naturally picks up his behaviour, whether good or bad, from his parents.
As children move in the larger world, their social circle widens and they include many other
people who make them realize their social responsibilities and rights. Although the child's
parents are his earliest and most important models, he is exposed to many other influences:
friends, television, school, film stars, social media and so on. The walls of boys' rooms, for
example, are often covered with the pictures of their the people they like.
It is well known that they do not imitate all the people they know in equal degrees. It is
therefore important to understand that a child's behaviour is affected by all of them.
Choose the correct answer from a, b, c, or d:
15. We can infer that parents greatly affect the children’s ……….. .

I went into the restaurant and ordered my meal. While I was waiting for the soup to arrive, I
looked around and noticed that a man sitting at a corner table near the door kept glancing in
my direction, as if he knew me. I certainly did not know him, for I never forget a face. I could
see that he was keeping an eye on me. When the waiter brought my soup, the man was clearly
puzzled by the familiar way in which the waiter and I talked to each other. He became even
more puzzled as time went on and it grew more and more obvious that I was well known in the

The food we eat seems to have deep effects on our health. Though science has made
enormous in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time , made many foods unfit to
eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related
to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon.
Different cultures are more likely to contract certain illnesses because of the food that is
characteristic in these cultures. The food that is related to illness is not a new discovery.
In 1945, government researches realized that substances commonly used to preserve colour in
meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet , these additives remain in our food , and
it becomes more difficult all the times to know which things on the packaging labels of
preserved food are helpful or harmful.. The additives , which we eat , are not all so direct.
Farmers often give penicillin to beef and poultry , and because of this, penicillin has been found
in the milk of some animals . Sometimes similar drugs are given to animals not for medical
goals, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten animals to get a higher
price. Though the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried a lot control these procedures
, practices continue.

3) Read the passage , then choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d:
All social animals need some methods of exchanging information as communication is very
important for all beings. Human beings do that in many ways .one of these ways is bodily
movements. They express agreement by nodding, by clapping the hands, by whistling, by
smiling, or by laughing. They express disagreement by shaking their heads. They show
direction by pointing, and they show size by holding their hands at a certain distance from each
other.
Even lower creatures such as insects use methods of exchanging information. Bees, like
human beings, live in organized groups. They tell each other that there is food by carrying
samples back to the hive. They show the distance and direction of the food by dancing. These
dances are important to the bees as they help them to know the sources of food.
Of course, the main difference between man’s method of exchanging information and that of
other creatures is the spoken language. Only man can speak. Thus, man alone can express
ideas and share knowledge with other human beings. Social groups of human beings, and
other lower creatures depend upon methods of great social and technical progress. What also
discriminates spoken language is that it is creative. Every now and then, new words, perhaps,
new structures are formed.
Choose the correct answer from a, b, c, or d:

a) the importance of social groups

3) Read the passage , then choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d:
Sleep is very important for our health and safety. We should get enough sleep to let our brains
work properly. Research has shown that sixty percent of adults suffer from sleep deprivation. If
we don't sleep well for a long time, many negative things may happen. We may get sick
because the body loses its ability to fight infections. Also, a lot of accidents can be caused
because drivers have difficulty concentrating as a result of sleep deprivation. We need an
average of eight hours of sleep at night. However, to get a good night's sleep, we need to set a
specific bedtime and wake up time and make it a routine. Also, we shouldn't drink cola, tea or
coffee during the day. We should stop eating, studying or watching TV in bed because bed is
meant for sleep.
Many studies have shown that a good night's sleep assists teaming process. Sleep helps you
to learn information that you have come across during the day and allows the human brain to
organize the day's memories. Sleep is an essential function that allows your body and mind to
recharge, leaving you refreshed and alert when you wake up. Healthy sleep also helps the

3) Read the passage , then choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d:
Water is a precious resource that is essential for all life on Earth. Yet, it's often taken for
granted. Water conservation means using our water supply wisely and caring for it properly. As
populations grow and our need for water increases, it becomes even more important to
manage this vital resource effectively.
Conserving water can extend the life of our water supply and ensure that we have enough for
future generations. Simple actions like fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, and choosing
water-efficient appliances can make a big difference. By reducing water waste, we also lessen
the need for costly water supply and treatment facilities.
It's not just about saving water; it's about ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
When we conserve water, we also save energy and reduce pollution. This is because treating,
heating, and distributing water requires a significant amount of energy.
Students can play a crucial role in water conservation by learning about the issue and taking
action in their homes and communities. Every drop counts, and together, we can protect this
essential resource".

3) Read the passage , then choose the correct answer from a, b, c or d:
When people are playing a game, they need to follow the rules. If they don't, the game
becomes disorganized and unfair. If a student ignores a rule against talking in class, the other
students cannot concentrate. Drivers who do not follow traffic laws can cause serious
accidents. Most things we do are governed by rules. This may be unwritten, like the rules of
social politeness, or official laws passed by parliament and backed up by the legal system. But
all rules and laws have the same purpose – to make it clear what it is right or wrong, and what
happens if someone breaks the rule. They are designed to ensure fairness, safety and respect
for other people’s rights, and in this way they help us work, play and live together peacefully.
If there were no rules and everyone was free to do whatever they wanted, most people would
probably behave selfishly. We need rules to help us get along together and show respect for
each other. Most of us are basically honest and knowing the rules means that we usually try to
follow them. One reason we do this is to avoid punishment, but the strongest argument for
following the rules is quite simply – that it makes the world a better place for all of us.

Firefighters are often asked to speak to school and community groups about the importance of
fire safety, particularly fire prevention and detection. Because smoke detectors reduce the risk
of dying in a fire by half, firefighters often provide audiences with information on how to install
these protective devices in their homes.
Specifically, they tell them these things: A smoke detector should be placed on each floor of a
home. While sleeping, people are in particular danger of an emergent fire, and there must be a
detector outside each sleeping area. A good site for a detector would be a hallway that runs
between living spaces and bedrooms.
Because of the dead-air space that might be missed by turbulent ‫ ُمضطرب‬hot air bouncing
around above a fire, smoke detectors should be installed either on the ceiling at least four
inches from the nearest wall, or high on a wall at least four, but no further than twelve, inches
from the ceiling . Detectors should not be mounted near windows, exterior doors, or other
places where drafts might direct the smoke away from the unit. Nor should they be placed in
kitchens and garages where cooking and gas fumes are likely to cause false alarms.

Long ago, in the days before lions were known in Europe, the bear was considered 'the king of
beasts. Many knights put pictures of bears on their shields. They hoped the bears would make
them look big and strong to the enemy.
Today, people still admire bears for their size and strength. In North America, the two most
common species of bears are the black bear and the brown bear. These two species have
much in common, but there are differences between them. Black bears are smaller than brown
bears, for example. They are also more likely to climb trees. The brown bear has a shoulder
hump and a curved snout ‫ بوز‬. The snout of a black bear is straighter.
Bears belong to the same family of animals as dogs and foxes. They are also like people in
one interesting way. They walk flat-footed, as people do. Most other mammals walk on their
toes. When the weather gets cold, bears hide in a cave or other warm spot and sleep for the
winter. Baby bears are born in early spring.
Bears eat both plants and meat, including nuts, berries, roots, fish, squirrels, and other small
animals. Bears live alone, except for mothers taking care of their cubs. They do not form
groups. For the most part, bears are peaceful. They would rather walk away than fight.

Arabic books and English books. We could have regular meetings every week or two in the
summer, and once a month during the school year. Here are the reasons for which I think we
should have book clubs. First, if we have a book club, it will encourage us to read many kinds
of books like Science books, Adventure books and Fiction books. It is known that if people read
a lot, they write better. So, this will help us in two ways. Secondly, we will develop some
responsibility if we take turns leading the discussion at meetings. The leader will have to read
the book carefully so as to discuss it positively and in detail. Thirdly, discussing books will help
us to overcome any shyness. Every member will have to say something.
Reading, good books will be a better way to make good use our time than playing
computer games or reading comic books. Don't you agree with me?
