INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Dubai, a city which you all know by it’s modern architecture and an
amazing skyline filled with tall buildings, fascinating right. what's more facinating is
that this city was once just a small fishing village with mud walls, surrounded by
salty sea water and a barren dessert. After the discovery of oil in 1950 dubai shifted
from trading pearls to trading oil, marking the start of it’s transformation, by which
in only a few decades it became a leading global city filled with luxury, where
towering skyscrapers stand as symbols of innovation and opulence attracting
visitors from around the world. (Wang, 2020, pp. 32–33)

ECHOES OF THE PAST

Despite its significant growth and transformation into a global metropolis, Dubai remains
deeply committed to preserving and celebrating its rich heritage. The city actively showcases
its cultural roots through restored historical sites, traditional markets, and annual festivals
that honor Emirati customs. From the wind towers of Al Fahidi to the vibrant souks along the
Creek, Dubai seamlessly blends its past with the present, ensuring that its traditions continue
to thrive amidst modern skyscrapers and luxury developments. (Alhasawi, 2019)

Al Faheedi Historical District, where traditional style buildings

stand alongside modern cafes. offer a glimps into the past
with its windtowers and narrow alleyways showcasing the
distinctive architectural heritage of old Dubai. Landmarks
such as Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum’s House and the Dubai
Museum stand as testaments to the legacy of the ruling family
and the city's transformation over the years. Meanwhile, Al
Seef beautifully blends tradition with contemporary design,
showcasing how Dubai integrates its cultural roots with
modern aesthetics, creating an experience where history
meets innovation. (Boussaa, 2014, pp. 177-179)

Living the Heritage

Dubai actively preserves and celebrates Emirati culture
through heritage festivals and traditional events, particularly
during National Day celebrations. Traditional stick dances like
Al-Ayalla, camel racing, and falconry are central to these
celebrations, reflecting the nation's cultural pride and unity.
Visitors also get the chance to experience these traditions
firsthand during desert safaris, where camel riding, falconry
shows, and the Al-Ayalla dance offer a complete traditional
heritage experience. (Manasse, 2024)

Heritage Through Trade

Dubai's traditional marketplaces, or souks, are more than just
places to do business; they are living reminders of the city's
long past as a major commercial hub. These markets are vibrant
reminders of the past when trade, especially between the East
and the West, was the foundation of Dubai's wealth. The souks
have maintained their genuine character and are still essential
to Dubai's economy and cultural identity. Despite the rapid
development of modern luxury malls, the souks have managed
to preserve their authentic character and continue to play a
vital role in Dubai’s economy and cultural identity. (Pearson,
2023)

There is no denying that Dubai has undergone a remarkable transformation in a short span of
time. Despite this rapid success and modernization, Emiratis remain deeply connected to
their cultural roots. Traditional attire, such as the kandura for men and abaya for women,
continues to be an integral part of daily life, symbolizing their pride in heritage. Additionally,
while many Emiratis engage in global business and travel extensively, which requires them to
be fluent in English, Still Arabic remains a cornerstone of their identity and is held in high
regards, remaining central to their national, religious, and regional identities. Even amidst
innovation and globalization, Dubai ensures that its traditions, values, and heritage are
preserved and honored, seamlessly blending the old with the new. (Leimgruber, J. R. E. et al.
2022)
