Position Prepositions

1. What Are Position Prepositions?


They show the location or placement of a person, object, or idea in space.
Examples: in, on, at, under, over, above, below, between, behind, beside, near, inside, outside, in
front of

2. Common Position Prepositions & How to Use Them

in - inside something, surrounded by it


Example: The keys are in my bag.

on - touching the surface of something


Example: The phone is on the table.

at - specific point/place
Example: Meet me at the bus stop.

under - lower than, covered by


Example: The shoes are under the bed.

over - above and covering


Example: Put the blanket over the baby.

above - higher than, not touching


Example: The lamp is above the desk.

below - lower than something


Example: The valley is below the mountain.

between - in the space separating two things


Example: The school is between the park and the bank.

behind - at the back of something


Example: The garden is behind the house.

beside - next to something


Example: She sat beside me.

near - close to, not far from


Example: The shop is near my house.

inside - within something


Example: Stay inside the house.

outside - not within something


Example: The kids are playing outside.

in front of - before the face or front part of something


Example: Stand in front of the door.

3. Rules & Tips


- Think 3D space picture objects and their placement relative to each other.
- Many position prepositions are followed by a noun/pronoun (the object of the preposition):
Example: The cat is on the chair.
- "In" vs. "On":
In = surrounded by something in a box, in a room.
On = touching surface on a desk, on a wall.
- "Above" vs. "Over":
Above = higher level, not necessarily covering.
Over = directly covering.

- "At" = a specific location or point at the station, at the corner.

4. Visual Example
Imagine a box and a ball:
- in ball is inside the box.
- on ball is sitting on top of the box.
- under ball is beneath the box.
- above ball is floating higher than the box.
- beside ball is next to the box.
- behind ball is at the back of the box.
- in front of ball is at the front of the box.
