The Figure in the Flying Carpet

by Robert M. Price

The name Necronomicon (veKpoc, corpse; vouoc, law; iKov, image = An Image
{or Picture} of the Law of the Dead) occurred to me in the course of a dream,
though the etymology is perfectly sound.
—H. P Lovecraft, letter to Harry O. Fischer, February 1937

Do you not know, brethren—for I am speaking to those who know the law—
that the law is binding on a person only during his life?
—Romans 7:1

What can one say about the fabulous Necronomicon that has not already been
said? Much in every way! Because nothing has been said. The title is a word
that points with a spectre’s empty sleeve to the nothing to which it refers.
In that it is like all words, like all texts. The Book that is said to be the anti-
Book, the book that brings oblivion and madness in the name of a knowl-
edge that is knowledge of the Nothing, and thus no knowledge at all, is,
ironically, the paradigm case of all books, the most bookish of books, the
most textual of texts. For, as Jacques Derrida, a modern reincarnation of the
Apostle Alhazred, says, we have witnessed not only the “death of the
author” (Roland Barthes’ phrase, i.e., the utter negation of authorial intent
by the simple autonomous existence of the text once written), but the
“death of the book” as well. In fact, it might be more helpful to render the
meaning of the Greek word Nexpovoutkov not as “the book of the dead”,
as has been suggested, but rather as “the death of the book.” Because, as
Derrida says, the death of the book signals the birth of the text. The difference
between the two amounts to the imaginary closure, the supposed self-suffi-
ciency, of a “book” versus the boundless, blinderless, illimitable ocean of text.
Since all texts refer to one another, presuppose one another, are in dia-
logue with one another, shed new light on one another, this fact of inter-
textuality connects and embraces all texts, all books and utterances, as part
of the infinite field of signifiers to which we assign arbitrary meanings by
placing the boundaries just so. By imposing our limiting conditions
(Shankara called them wpadhis) upon the All of the text, the Abyss of mean-
ing upon which every text, like every individual atman, opens, we divide off
a text like a momentary froth of sea foam cast up by a wave, immediately

to join with it again. The universal megatext is analogous if not identical
with the implicit repertoire of language (/angwe) as opposed to actual, con-
crete utilizations, actualizations of it in individual speech-acts (parole); thus
it is susceptible of any meaning, any interpretation, just like the alphabet
which can be kabbalistically recombined to yield an infinite number of
words. This is because, again like the alphabet, language has in itself no
meaning at all! It could mean everything and anything because it means
nothing. As Uddalaka said to his son Svetaketu in the Chandogya Upanishad,
“Neti, neti!” The truth is neither this nor that. It is the Void, the Plenitude
of emptiness. And so it is with the infinite ocean of the megatext, the inter-
text. Why?
Because there is no objective “meaning center” about which speech and
language and texts rotate. As Nietzsche, the Mad Aryan, said, God is dead!
Truth is dead! The earth has become unchained from its sun and now wan-
ders freely through chartless gulfs of cosmic infinitude. All coordinates, all
longitudes and latitudes are henceforth meaningless. Truth is in the eye of
the beholder. Thus it is fiction. In terms of language and texts, this means
that (as Ferdinand de Saussure reckoned it) all language is meaningful not
referentially but differentially. The meaning of words derives not from their
pointing to some object signified by the word. That is out of the question,
simply because of the imprecision of language, the “ideal type” character of
definitions which real things never quite match. Words refer only to other
words, gaining their meaning from their similarities to and differences from
each other. Every word, as traditionally understood, promises meaning. It
says to us, “Just a moment, and I'll point you to your destination.” But it
never does. It leads us on a wild goose chase. It is a bullet fired against the
impenetrable dome ceiling of language, which it can never escape. It can
only ricochet.
There is nothing outside language, no meaning underlying or overly-
ing the curving wall of words. Nor cow/d there be anything beyond. The cur-
vature of the linguistic firmament is like the curvature of the universe as
envisioned by some physicists; it is not like the hull of a ship, but just
describes the pattern of motion on the rim. There is water beyond the hull,
but there is nothing beyond the arc of possible motion. And there is no
Transcendental Signified to which words, symbols, signifiers point. They
only point to one another, like annoying flunkies in the Motor Vehicle
Department: You stand in line for hours, waiting to get to the window,
where your questions will all be answered. Only they're not. Instead, as you
know, Marge Simpson’s sister directs you to a different mile-long line. Her
other sister, at the head of that one, will in turn send you to a third, or back
to the first. It’s like a dictionary which defines a word in terms of something
else you have to know first, but you don’t, so you keep your finger in the
