ABSTRACT
This report expresses the application of theoretical practices learnt from class in to real
life practice as well as the student’s direct experience in the working environment during
the real-life period.
During this project, we started by conducting a preliminary survey of the proposed site
so as to obtain the plot’s coordinates and therefore its physical planning report.
We used our GPS to ascertain the whole distance of the road being worked on and
found it to be 0.35km. However, a measuring tape was also used to confirm the distance.
However, during this study we encountered a number of challenges like silted side
drains, blocked culverts and some were even broken which was a problem to water run-
off, there was also a number of pot holes on the road surface which became a problem
to its users.
Amidst these challenges, we successfully addressed them during the whole duration of
the project.

CHAPTER ONE:
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This report describes the construction of the low cost-seal on main gate-library road in
UTC Lira.
This project is to improve an all-weather accessibility and reduce gravel loss while
utilizing the available resources.
This technology aims to provide more durable and cost-effective road surface, reducing
the need for frequent maintenance and depletion of natural gravel resources.
Additionally, the LCS promotes economic and social development by reducing transport
costs, time and reliance on natural growth.
This report also contains activities done to improve the conditions of side drains and
culverts. It shows the different survey techniques that were done in establishment of the
road centerline.

1.2 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Due to the poor condition of the UTC Lira-road which has a number of potholes, silted
side drains and culverts, there was need to address it hence this project proposal.

1.3 PROJECT PROPOSAL

This project proposal for the construction of the low cost-seal road in UTC Lira provides a
detailed explanation for the civil concept, design goals, site utilization and sustainability
while ensuring alignment with the administration requirements.

1.4 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project involves the construction of low cost-seal on main gate-library road in UTC
Lira which is 0.35km. This project aims to address the bad condition of the road which is
used by the whole community of UTC Lira, utilization of the available resources and
enhancing durability.

10
1.5 OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
1.5.1 MAIN OBJECTIVES
 To improve all-weather rural accessibility and reduce gravel loss
1.5.2 OTHER OBJECTIVES
 Improve accessibility
 Reduced gravel loss
 Cost-effectiveness
 Sustainability
 Local capacity building
1.6 JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT
The project aims at providing practical knowledge and skills to students on the use of
labor accompanied by light equipment in road construction.
1.7 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT
 Improved road safety
 Increased road durability
 Economic benefits
 Social benefits
 Environmental benefits
1.8 PROJECT TIMELINE
Surface preparation and drainage works, re-grading of existing surfaces, stone pitching,
laying of first layer of surface dressing and slabbing of side drains were some of the
activities carried out in the project.
Equipment was provided by the office of the head of department, civil.

11
CHAPTER TWO
1.9 METHODOLOGY
Methodology refers to the system of methods used in a particular area of study or
activity as discussed below.
Surface preparation
We cleared the road surface of debris, dirt and vegetation
We graded the road surface to achieve the desired profile
Application of prime coat
We applied the prime coat material that is, bitumen emulsion to the prepared surface
Application of prime coat at the recommended rate
Application of seal coat
Application of bitumen emulsion over the prime coat
A layer of aggregates was spread over the seal coats
The surface was rolled to ensure proper bonding and compaction.
Compaction: Use of roller to compact the deal coat and aggregate layer
Curing
Allowing the seal coat to cure and harden before opening the road to traffic.

12
2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW
The road construction using low cost-seal is increasingly being focused on provision
access and poverty alleviation. When access is treated as priority, it is likely that there
will be and increased use of spot improvement techniques. The decision to surface a
road with bituminous seal may be made because the existing gravel pavement requires
too much maintenance or because suitable re-gravelling materials are scarce and, in
some cases, sealing roads, which carry traffic as low as low as 30 vehicles per day, maybe
justified. The upgrading of short sections of road for which the use of conventional large
road construction equipment is prohibitively expensive making the labor-based methods
described here most suitable.

13
CHAPTER THREE
2.1 DESCRIPTION OF THE SITE
The site is located just within the areas of administration to the library of UTC Lira and its
span is 0.35km.
2.2 TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
 Tipper  Jerrycans
 PPEs  Strings
 Spades  Pegs
 Hoes  Wheel loader
 Pick axe  Roller
 Hard brushes  Bitumen boils
 Brooms  Water browser
2.3 ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT AT SITE
 Establishment of road centerline
 Clearance of existing road surface
 Removal of silt from the side drains and culverts
 Excavation of the ditch
 Clearing the shrubs from the road sides
 Slabbing of the excavated ditch
 Boiling and application of bitumen on the road
CHAPTER FOUR
2.4 LESSONS LEARNT, CHALLENGES AND RECOMMENDATION
2.5 LESSONS LEARNT
I learnt how to create a ditch along the road
I also learnt how to practically establish a centerline on the road
I learnt how to apply bitumen on the road
I learnt the whole aim of usage of low cost-seal
I learnt how to socialize during work

14
2.6 CHALLENGES
Inadequate tools for doing work
 Poor supervision of work leading to limited skills ascertained by students
 Disturbances from the passing vehicles and pedestrians on the road being worked
on
 Presence of roots in the ground hindering excavation of the ditch
 Poor time management by both supervisors and students leading to late hours
work
 Delays in material delivery
2.7 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, this road project successfully fostered a collaborative approach to laying
the low-cost seal on the UTC Lira-road, encouraging more skills attainment, problem
solving and team work. It also provided us a valuable insight into labor-based road
construction, showcasing the importance of collective effort towards road condition
assessments.

2.8 RECOMMENDATION
 The working tools and equipment must always be supplied sufficient enough
enhancing a good output
 The site supervisors must always be available at sit to guide the students in every
activity of the site
 Directives should have been given to work first on one half of the road to avoid
interferences from people passing
 Students ought to have been given more manual work so as to earn more
knowledge and practical skills on road construction
 Ditch excavation required an excavator
 Early material and equipment delivery to save time.
