Reference Guide: Indexing Gearbox

Selection for Capsule Filling Machines

1. Introduction
In automatic capsule filling machines, the indexing gearbox (indexer) is the heart of the
rotary turret. It ensures accurate intermittent rotation, aligning capsules precisely with filling,
closing, and discharge stations.

Chinese capsule filling machine manufacturers primarily use globoidal cam indexers due to
their cost-effectiveness and reliability, while higher-end models employ servo-driven
indexing systems for flexibility.

2. What Chinese Vendors Use

 Globoidal Cam Indexers
o Most common in Chinese-made capsule fillers.
o Advantages: low cost, compact size, high repeatability, and self-locking.
o Examples: Models like 60ds, 70ds, 83ds widely available in China.
o Vendors: Sango Automation, Hansmat, Toption, Weifang indexer suppliers.
 Servo/Direct Drive Systems
o Found in premium machines or export models.
o Advantages: programmable motion profiles, variable index angles, reduced
mechanical wear.
o Disadvantages: higher cost, requires more advanced control systems.

3. Comparison: Cam vs Servo Indexing

Feature Globoidal Cam Indexer Servo Indexer + Reducer
Cost Low High
Reliability Very high (mechanical) High (depends on servo + drive)
Flexibility Fixed motion (cam curve) Fully programmable
Repeatability ±20–30 arcsec typical ±5–10 arcsec typical
Maintenance Low (lubrication only) Medium (servo tuning, encoder)

4. Supplier Checklist
When contacting indexer suppliers, request the following data:
1. Index method: globoidal cam or servo-driven.
2. Peak output torque (N·m) and continuous torque.
3. Output speed (rpm) and max inertia load (kg·m²).
4. Positioning repeatability (arcmin) and backlash.
5. Mechanical interface: shaft diameter, bore, flange PCD, keyway.
6. Through-hole availability (for cables/shafts).
7. Service life & lubrication requirements.
8. Lead time & price for 1 pc and 2 pcs.
9. Cam curve file (if cam indexer).

5. Cost-Saving Alternatives
1. Use one main cam indexer for the turret and transfer secondary motions via
cams/linkages.
2. Use servo drive for turret and derive secondary intermittent motions mechanically.
3. Buy used/refurbished cam indexers from Chinese suppliers (significant savings).
4. Choose Chinese indexer makers (Sango, Hansmat, Toption) for affordable cam
indexers.

6. Recommendation
 For most mid-range capsule fillers (40k–80k capsules/hour):
→ Use globoidal cam indexer (size 60–83ds) from a Chinese vendor.
 For high-speed, recipe-driven machines (>100k capsules/hour, export):
→ Consider servo indexer for flexibility.
