Mohammad Hatta
One of Indonesia proclamators is Mohammad Hatta. He was born on August 12th, 1902 in Bukittinggi, Sumatra, Indonesia (Dutch East Indies) and he
was died on March 14th, 1980 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Together with Soekarno, he was a leader of the Indonesian independence movement who was prime
minister in 1948 till 1950 and vice president in 1950 till 1956 of Indonesia.
He was president of the Perhimpunan Indonesia (Indonesian Union), a progressive, nationalist political group founded by overseas Indonesian
students while he studied in the Netherlands from 1922 to 1932. Mohammad Hatta returned to Indonesia in 1932. Then, The Dutch arrested him in 1934 because
of his political activities and sent him the infamous concentration camp of Boven Digul in West New Guinea. In 1935 he was exiled to the island of Bandanaira,
where he remained until the eve of the Japanese invasion in World War II.
Different with the Dutch, the Japanese actively promoted Indonesian nationalism. In 1943, Mohammad Hatta and Soekarno, the future president of
Indonesia, collaborated with them helped to organize the Japanese-sponsored home defense corps Sukarela Tentara Pembela Tanah Air (Peta), the first
Indonesian armed force. When it became clear that the Japanese would lose the war, however, many nationalists urged an insurrection and immediate
independence, but Hatta advised patience until they were sure that the Japanese would surrender. Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta were kidnapped by members
of the students’ union and persuaded to declare Indonesian independence on August 17th, 1945. Hatta served as vice president in the subsequent revolutionary
government. In 1948, when he was prime minister, he played an important part in the suppression of the communist revolt at Madiun in eastern Java, a measure
that gained the struggling government many supporters in Western countries. He led the Indonesian delegation at the United Nations-sponsored Hague
Conference (August 23–November 2, 1949) that culminated in the recognition by the Netherlands of Indonesia’s complete independence.
Mohammad Hatta helped to guide the new country through a crucial period of transition from a federal to a unified state while serving as prime
minister during the first seven months of 1950.
Mohammad Hatta served as vice president until December 1956, when he resigned because of increasing disagreement with President Soekarno’s
policy of “guided democracy.” Essentially a moderate, administratively oriented leader, Hatta felt that dealing with Indonesia’s grave economic crises was of
primary importance and feared that Soekarno’s policies would bankrupt the country. He was also consistently critical of Sukarno’s anti-Western and anti-
Malaysian foreign policy. After Soekarno’s downfall, Mohammad Hatta came out of retirement to serve as special adviser to President Soeharto on the problem
of government corruption.

Alfred Bernhard Nobel
Alfred Nobel was born on October 21st, 1833 in Stockhlom, Sweden. He was Swedish chemist, engineer, and industrialist, who invented dynamite
and other, more powerful explosives and who also founded the Nobel Prizes.
Alfred Nobel was the fourth son of Immanuel and Caroline Nobel. Alfred’s father was an inventor and engineer. He had failed at various business
ventures until moving in 1837 to Russia, where he prospered as a manufacturer of explosive mines and machine tools. Alfred and his family left Stockholm in
1842 to join the father in St. Petersburg, Russia. Alfred’s newly prosperous parents were now able to send him to private tutors. By the age of sixteen, he was
known as a competent chemist and was fluent in English, French, German, and Russian, as well as Swedish.
Alfred Nobel went to study chemistry in Paris after he left from Russia. He, then spent four years in the United States working under the builder of the
ironclad warship Monitor. Upon his return to Russia, Alfred Nobel worked in his father’s factory, which made military equipment. But, after the war ended in 1856,
the company had difficulty switching to the peace time and it went bankrupt in 1859.
Alfred Nobel and his parents returned to Sweden, while his brothers Robert and Ludvig stayed behind in Russia to salvage what was left of the family business.
Alfred soon began experimenting with explosives in a small laboratory on his father’s estate. At the time, the only dependable explosive for use in mines was
black powder, a form of gunpowder. A recently discovered liquid compound, nitroglycerin, was a much more powerful explosive, but it was so unstable that it
could not be handled with any degree of safety. Nevertheless, Alfred Nobel in 1862 built a small factory to manufacture nitroglycerin, and at the same time he
undertook research in the hope of finding a safe way to control the explosive’s detonation. In 1863 he invented a practical detonator consisting of a wooden plug
inserted into a larger charge of nitroglycerin held in a metal container; the explosion of the plug’s small charge of black powder serves to detonate the much more
powerful charge of liquid nitroglycerin. In 1865 Nobel invented an improved detonator called a blasting cap; The invention of the blasting cap inaugurated the
modern use of high explosives.
Alfred Nobel’s second important invention was that of dynamite in 1867. Nobel named the new product dynamite (from Greek dynamis, “power”) and
was granted patents for it in Great Britain (1867) and the United States (1868). Dynamite established Nobel’s fame worldwide and was soon put to use in blasting
tunnels, cutting canals, and building railways and roads.
In the 1870s and ’80s Nobel built a network of factories throughout Europe to manufacture dynamite, and he formed a web of corporations to produce and
market his explosives.
Alfred Nobel died in Italy, in 1896. At his death his worldwide business empire consisted of more than 90 factories manufacturing explosives and
ammunition. Alfred Nobel had always been generous in humanitarian and scientific philanthropies, and he left the bulk of his fortune in trust to establish what
came to be the most highly regarded of international awards, the Nobel Prizes.

Cut Nyak Dhien
Cut Nyak Dhien was a leader of the Acehnese guerrilla forces during the Aceh War. She was born in Lampadang in 1848. Following the death of her
husband Teuku Umar, she led guerrilla actions against the Dutch for 25 years. She was awarded the title of Indonesian National Hero on 2 May 1964 by the
Indonesian government.
Cut Nyak Dhien was born into an Islamic aristocratic family in Aceh Besar. Her father, Teuku Nanta Setia, was a member of the ruling Ulee Balang
aristocratic class in VI mukim, and her mother was also from an aristocratic family. She was educated in religion and household matters. She was renowned for
her beauty, and many men proposed to marry her. Finally, she married Teuku Cik Ibrahim Lamnga, the son of an aristocratic family, when she was twelve.
On 26 March 1873, the Dutch declared war on Aceh. In November 1873, during the Second Aceh Expedition, the Dutch successfully captured VI
mukim in 1873, followed by the Sultan’s Palace in 1874. In 1875, Cut Nyak Dhien and her baby, along with other mothers, were evacuated to a safer location
while her husband Ibrahim Lamnga fought to reclaim VI mukim. Lamnga died in action on June 29, 1878. Hearing this, Cut Nyak Dhien was enraged and swore
to destroy the Dutch.
Some time later, Teuku Umar proposed to marry her. Learning that Teuku Umar would allow her to fight, she accepted his proposal. They were
married in 1880. This greatly boosted the morale of Aceh armies in their fight against Dutch. Teuku Umar and Cut Nyak Dhien had a daughter, Cut Gambang.
The war continued, and the Acehnese declared Holy War against the Dutch, and were engaged in guerrilla warfare. Undersupplied, Teuku Umar surrendered to
the Dutch forces on September 30, 1893 along with 250 of his men. The Dutch army welcomed him and appointed him as a commander, giving him the title of
Teuku Umar Johan Pahlawan. However, Teuku Umar secretly planned to betray the Dutch. Two years later Teuku Umar set out to assault Dutch in Aceh, but he
instead deserted with his troops taking with them heavy equipment, weapons, and ammunition, using these supplies to help the Acehnese. This is recorded in
Dutch history as “Het verraad van Teukoe Oemar” (the treason of Teuku Umar).
The Dutch general Johannes Benedictus van Heutsz sent a spy to Aceh. Teuku Umar was killed during a battle when the Dutch launched a surprise
attack on him in Meulaboh. When Cut Gambang cried over his death, Cut Nyak Dhien slapped her and then she hugged her and said: “As Acehnese women, we
may not shed tears for those who have been martyred.”
After her husband died, Cut Nyak Dhien continued to resist the Dutch with her small army until its destruction in 1901, as the Dutch adapted their
tactics to the situation in Aceh. Furthermore, Cut Nyak Dhien suffered from nearsightedness and arthritis as she got older. The number of her troops was also
decreasing and they suffered from lack of supplies.
One of her troops, Pang Laot, told the Dutch the location of her headquarters in Beutong Le Sageu. The Dutch attacked, catching Dhien and her
troops by surprise. Despite desperately fighting back, Dhien was captured. Her daughter, Cut Gambang, escaped and continued the resistance. Dhien was
brought to Banda Aceh and her myopia and arthritis slowly healed, but in the end she was exiled to Sumedang, West Java because the Dutch were afraid she
would mobilize the resistance of Aceh people. She died on 6 November 1908.

The World’s First Woman Astronaut
Valentina Tereshkova was born in 1937 in a village called Maslennikovo, Russia. Her father was a tractor driver and her mother a factory worker. In
those days, education for girls was not emphasised. Valentina stopped school at 16.
However, she continued her studies with correspondence courses. She also became interested in parachuting and joined a local parachuting club.
In the 1950s, Russia and the USA were competing to explore space. The Russians had already put a man in space in 1961 and was looking for a
woman candidate to be sent to space.
They were looking for a candidate with a pilot background. Valentina was only a textile factory worker. Nevertheless, she was chosen to be a
candidate. It was her expertise at parachuting that helped her to be selected.
Over 400 women applied for the chance to become the world's first woman in space. Each woman was put through rigorous tests and had to pass
difficult exams. Out of the 400 women, only five were selected for the final round.
In the final round, there were even more difficult tests to pass. The women had to pass the weightless flight test, isolation tests, rocket theory,
parachute jumping and pilot training. At the end, there was a final exam. Each woman worked hard to pass the tests because only the best would be chosen to
go into space.
Ultimately, Valentina and another woman were chosen to go into space. They were the best of the five.
Both of them would ride Russia's powerful rockets called Vostok. The date set for the two women's launch was June 1963. As the date neared, there
were whispers that only one woman would be sent to space instead of two. Which of the two would be chosen to be the first woman to go into space?
Luckily for Valentina, she was chosen to be that woman. She was 26 years old and was about to make world history.

Because today’s people are living longer than ever, more psychologists and social workers have begun to
study ways of care-giving to improve care of the elderly. They have found that all caregivers share a common
characteristic: They believe that they are the best persons for the job, for different reasons. One caregiver said that
she had always been close to the mother. Another caregiver was the oldest child, and another was the youngest child.
Regardless of the reason, the caregivers all felt that they could do the job better than anyone else. Social workers
interviewed caregivers to find out why they took on the responsibilty of caring of an elderly, dependent relative. They
discovered three basic reasons, Many caregivers believed that they had an obligation to help their relatives. Some
stated that helping others made them fell more useful. Others hoped that by helping someone now, they would
deserve care when they became old and dependent.
Researchers have found that caring for the elderly can be a very positive experience. The elderly
appreciated the care and attention they received. They were affectionate and cooperative. However, even when care-
giving is satisfying, it is had work. Social workers and experts on aging offer caregivers and potential caregivers help
when arranging for the care of and elderly relative. One consideration is to ask parents what they want before they
become sick or dependent. Perhaps they prefer going into nursing home, and can select one in advance. On the other
hand, they may want to live with their adult children. Caregivers must also learn to arouse confidence in others and
ask for help from others. Brothers and sisters are often willing to help, but they may not know what to do.

Hurricane
Hurricanes generally occur in the North Atlantic from May through November, with the peak of the
hurricane season in September, only rarely will they occur from December through April in that part of the
ocean. The main reason for the occurance of hurricanes during this period is that the temperature on the
water’s surface is at its warmest and the humidity of the air is at its highest.
Of the tropical storms that occur each year in the North Atlantic, only about five, on the average,
are powerful enough to be called hurricanes. To be classified as a hurricane, a tropical storm must have winds
reaching speds of at least 117 kilometers per hour, but the winds are often much stronger that that; the winds of
intense hurricanes can easily surpass 240 kilometers per hour.

How to Give a Succesfull Presentation
There are so many interesting presentations. But, they are destroyed by the bad speaker. As the
speaker itself, giving a bad presentation is like a nightmare because speakers hold the interest of their
audience. They should avoid errors as soon as possible. If the chance of errors can be avoided, the chance of
getting big attention is higher. Then, how to make a good presentation?
There are fundamental differences between oral and written report. In the oral presentation, speaker needs to
follow the speaker who presents the materials. In the written report, the reader can skip the unnecessary part to
jump to the content, conclusion, recommendation, et cetera. So, what should we do? We should speak as
confident as possible. Besides that, the detail of the topic should treat separately. It can make the audience feel
curious and eager to follow the speaker.

Practicing Your Presentation
Practice presenting your report at least once before presenting it in class. Time your talk so you know exactly how much material you can fit in, and
how to set the material. Don't just read your notes to yourself - stand up and give the talk the way you will to the class. You will find it very difficult to speak clearly
at your normal silent reading speed.
You will probably find, if you are like most people, that you have too much material. If possible, practice presenting your report in the room where
you are going to present it formally. Learn to fill the room with your voice, as described in lecture. Concentrating on the sound of your
voice will also help you not to be nervous when you are presenting the report. Nervousness may make you speak faster or slower than in your rehearsal. Be
prepared with a little extra material, in case you speak too fast.
If English is not your native language, and you find speaking without a prepared text difficult, or if you are overwhelmingly nervous about speaking
publicly, it is all right to write your presentation out verbatim and memorize it. However, you must treat memorizing a report in the same way you would treat
memorizing a play script. This means that you must memorize it with normal pauses, emphasis, and intonation, and take special care not to speak faster than the
normal speech rate. If humanly possible, don't do your presentation by memorizing a speech it is not the best way. If you are a non-native speakers, it is good
for you to have more pronunciation and intonation practice. Confidence in your understanding of your material, and taking your time will make up for a lot of
awkward English and hyper-nervousness. So will substantial practice presenting your report.
Get enough sleep the night before. I have seen someone present a paper at a professional conference
after running on adrenalin for a few days, then pass out and fall off the platform when he was asked a questions.
Above all, remember that in an oral presentation, you must make each major point in several ways. The old saying about this is, "First you tell 'em
what you're going to tell 'em, then you tell 'em, and then you tell 'em what you told 'em." Of course, using exactly the same words each time does not help
comprehension; what you are trying to do is to find the explanation that works for each member of the audience, and different people in the audience will
understand different explanations.

The Principality club secured a historic Ligue 1 title with a 2-0 defeat of St-Etienne that took them to 92 points – ensuring they will end the campaign
with the second-best points tally in Ligue 1 history.
Leonardo Jardim’s young, dynamic and free-scoring side have charmed the continent this term and are now French football’s highest scoring team in
over half a century with 104 league goals.
Moreover, only Barcelona have outscored Monaco across Europe’s top five leagues this season. But while the majority of the Catalan club’s goals
have been hit by their attacking trio, Monaco have spread the goals out among their entire squad.
Six Monaco players have more than eight league goals to their name this season, which includes a remarkable return to form for Colombia
international Radamel Falcao, who has fired 21 of them.
Teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring on Wednesday, becoming the youngest player (18 years, 147 days) ever to manage 15 goals
in a single season in Europe’s top five leagues.
