Theme - Indian Cancer & Research Center (ICRC)
Introduction:
Cancer stands as a well-recognized imperative within public health, ranking among the foremost causes
of mortality on a global scale. The year 2020 witnessed a staggering tally of over 19 million fresh
instances of cancer and nearly 10 million fatalities attributable to the disease worldwide. Approximately
one in every six deaths globally can be attributed to cancer, underscoring its profound impact on public
health

Objective:
To outline a structured approach for the establishment of a cancer center or enhancement of services
within an existing facility, with the aim of facilitating its practical implementation while accounting for
local contextual factors and available resources.

Vision:
To provide holistic and collaborative care to the cancer patients and relieve their sufferings by use of
evidence-based practices in their treatment plan.

Mission:
 Providing early screening and detection of disease
 Evidence based treatment according to the condition of patients
 Providing holistic and collaborative care to the patients
 Providing palliative care to the patients to relieve their sufferings
 Providing a platform for the students to conducting researches in the field of oncology to increase
evidence-based practices

Functional Areas
The functional areas in cancer hospital may include the following Functional Areas:

1. Entry / Reception including:


Waiting areas equipped with amenities including beverage-making facilities, telephones, vending
machines, and restroom facilities. Additionally, provision for an interview room to facilitate patient and
family discussions, as well as treatment planning. Adequate storage space for files, stationery, and
wheelchairs, along with dedicated areas such as a prayer room and a banking facility.

2. Emergency
 Treatment chair or bed bays
 Ensuites, Patient Toilets

3. Chemotherapy Treatment Areas including:


 OPD
 Treatment chair or bed bays
 Isolation rooms as required
 Ensuites, Patient Toilets
 Treatment Room - Cytotoxic room/ day care
 oncology ward- medical and hematology oncology wards for both adult and pediatric population.
 Day care facility

4. Radiation treatment area including:


 OPD
 Treatment chair or bed

Layout is designed into 2 floor building by including:
1, Basement which include separate parking for four-wheeler and two-wheeler ,store room & food outlet.

trained oncologists)

 Pharmacy staff trained in preparing and monitoring systemic therapy

 Other support staff (including data and ward clerks)
 Nutritionists
 Palliative care specialists

HR Specialists
Norms GDMO 1for 10 beds(critical care area), 1 for 20 beds on
non-critical area

Nurses- 1:1 in ICU, 1:2 step down unit, 1:6 wards and other
areas, OT - 2per OT per shift, 1 nurse around clock
for delivery unit.

1. Nursing Staff:
Nurse Manager or Nurse in Charge: 8
Registered Nurses (RNs): 40-50
Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) or Enrolled Nurses: 10-20
Nursing Assistants: 15-20
2. Medical Staff:
Physicians (including Oncologists, Surgeons, Anesthesiologists): 8-12
Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners: 4-6

3. Support Staff:
Unit Secretaries or Administrative Assistants: 5-8
Medical Laboratory Technicians or Clinical Laboratory Scientists:
Radiology Technicians: 5-8
Pharmacists: 5-8
Pharmacy Technicians: 2-4
Respiratory Therapists: 5-8
Physical Therapists: 5-8
Occupational Therapists: 2-4
Social Workers: 2-4
Psychologists or Psychiatrists: 2-4
Nutritionists or Dietitians: 1-2

As per IPHS per bed area requirement is of 85 sq.m., so,
