Learning Competency

Share research experiences and knowledge. (CS_RS11-IIIa-1)

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:

 define research and the different types of research, and

 explain the academic and practical importance of doing research.

II. Subject Matter

a. References

 Ackoff, Russell L. Scientific Method. New York: John Wiley & Sons, 1962.
 Creswell, John W. Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods
Approaches. 3rd edition. California: SAGE Publications Inc., 2009.

b. Materials
- Chalk
- Powerpoint presentation
- Laptop

c. Strategies
- Lecture - Discussion
- Think – Pair – Share
- Cooperative and Collaborative Learning

III. Learning Tasks/Procedures

a. Preliminary Activities
- Classroom Management
- Checking of Attendance

Lesson Proper

b. Motivation
Let the students answer the question Why is research important? How does research
affect your daily life?

c. Activity

Let the students form a group of three, the first group will do a brainstorm why research
is important using a manila sheet of paper, the second group will compose a song about
research and the third one will interpret and make actions about research. After that, they will
present to the class.

d. Abstraction

After the activity, the students reflect on their responses about the lesson. Research is “the
systematic study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new
conclusions” (Oxford English Dictionary, as cited in O’Leary 2004).

Research begins with a question.

Types of Research

1. Basic research
Purpose: To gain broader understanding of a particular problem or phenomenon.

2. Applied research
Purpose: To find solutions to actual problems.

3. Basic research
Outcome: New ideas, concepts, and/or theories that broaden understanding but may
not be applicable in real life.

4. Applied research
Outcome: New ideas and concepts that have direct real-life application.
Basic research is mostly theoretical and is not directly applicable to real-life
problems and concerns.

Examples of Basic Research:

● The role of the government in providing basic social services

● Therapeutic effects of pet ownership
● Parenting styles across different Asian cultures

Applied research has obvious and immediate applications.

Examples of Applied Research:

● The effectiveness of vaccines in preventing infectious diseases
● The effectiveness of social media advertisements in increasing sales

Basic research produces knowledge to understand the world better. Applied

research uses this knowledge in the daily lives of people. Basic research and applied
research are related to each other.

Importance of Research:

Doing research is important because…

● It helps us understand the world better.

● It allows us to find answers to problems.
● It enables us to evaluate our answers to different problems.

e. Application

1. Form a group of three to five students.

2. Look for one recent newspaper article published within the past month (print or
online) about an event or a topic that caught your interest as a group.
3. Read the newspaper article and answer the questions below.
4. Prepare a five-minute presentation of your answers to be presented in the class.

f. Assessment

Quick Check:

1. This is the type of research that is most useful for practical purposes.
2. This is the type of research that generates new knowledge, ideas, concepts, or
theories.

3. Classify this research topic as basic or applied research:

A study on effective teaching methods for children under 5 years old

REMARKS

REFLECTION
A. No. of learners who earned 80% in the evaluation

B. No. of learners who require additional activities for

remediation

C. Did the remedial lessons work? No. of learners who

have caught up with the lesson

D. No. of learners who continue to require remediation

E. Which of my teaching strategies worked well? Why did

these work?

F. What difficulties did I encounter which my principal or

supervisor can help me solve?

G. What innovation or localized materials did I

use/discover which I wish to share with other teachers?
