Construction planning management
Course Objectives
1. Understand the fundamental principles of construction planning, scheduling, and
management in civil engineering projects.
2. Develop network diagrams using Critical Path Method (CPM) and identify critical
activities, total float, and free float.
3. Apply Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) to handle uncertainty in
project timelines using probabilistic time estimates.
4. Analyze and compare CPM and PERT methods for different project scenarios.
5. Implement the crashing technique to optimize project duration and cost effectively.
6. Use basic project management software tools (MS Project, Primavera, or Excel) for
scheduling and time-cost analysis.
7. Interpret case studies to connect theoretical concepts with real-world construction
projects.
8. Prepare a complete project scheduling report integrating CPM, PERT, and Crashing
for a sample construction project.
9. Enhance problem-solving, analytical thinking, and decision-making skills in project
management.
10. Present technical findings and solutions clearly through reports, diagrams, and
presentations.
Prerequisites
• Familiarity with engineering drawing and reading project plans (bar charts,
diagrams).
• Understanding of basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication,
division) and elementary statistics (mean, probability).
• Ability to interpret simple tabular data and perform basic calculations.
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet tools.
• Access to a computer or laptop with internet connection for practical activities
Tools & Environment
• Software & Digital Tools
• Microsoft Excel / Google Sheets – for BOQ preparation, quantity calculations, and
rate analysis.
• AutoCAD (Basic) – for reading and extracting measurements from drawings.
• DSR (Delhi Schedule of Rates) – for standard item codes and rates.
