OIL SYSTEM

DESCRIPTION/OPERATION

1. General

The engine oil system has these sub-systems:

DISTRIBUTION

DESCRIPTION/OPERATION

1. General

The engine mounted oil system includes an internal pressure pump and three
internal scavenge pumps. The scanvenge pumps, two in the reduction gear
section and one in the turbine section, return the oil to the cooling
system and the oil tank assembly. These components are included in the
engine manufacturers manual (EMM). The aircraft system components are a
cooler assembly (Ref. 79-21-00, P. Block 1) and flexible tubes.

ENGINE OIL DISTRIBUTION

DESCRIPTION/OPERATION

1. General

The engine oil distribution system has a cooler assembly and flexible
tubes.

2. Component Location (Fig. 1)

ITEM FIN DESIGNATION ZONE ACCESS REFERENCE

PANEL

1. - Cooler Assembly 479 - 79-21-01

(489)

3. Description

Oil supply and return to the cooler assembly (the cooler) from the engine
is through flexible tubes which have quick-release connections.

4. Component Description

A. Cooler Assembly (Fig. 2)

The cooler assembly (9) has an inlet manifold (6), an outlet manifold
(5), a core assembly (8) and an oil return pan (4). An oil drain plug
(7) is located between the inlet and outlet manifolds, and a
thermostat (2) is installed at the inlet/outlet connections.

The core assembly (8) consists of a matrix and internal oil pipes.

The thermostat (2) has a bypass valve (1) to isolate the inlet and
outlet manifolds. Quick release connections (3) are installed to the
unit for easy maintenance.

The function of the cooler is to use ram air to cool the engine oil
within its operational limits.

5. Operation (Fig. 2)

On initial operation, when the engine is cold, the bypass valve (1) is in
the open position. Oil supplied to the cooler goes to the inlet manifold
(6) and is then returned to the oil tank through the outlet manifold (5).

As the oil temperature increases to between 54ºC and 60ºC (130ºF and
140ºF) the bypass valve (1) starts to close. This lets some of the oil
into the core assembly where it is cooled by the core (8) and then
returned to the oil tank.

When the oil temperature gets to between 71ºC and 77ºC (160ºF and 171ºF)
the bypass valve closes and all the oil goes through the cooler. The
bypass valve controls the oil temperature between its operational limits.

To protect the cooler from too much pressure, a relief valve in the bypass
valve opens when the pressure is between 1,73 and 2,07 bar at temperature
of 82ºC to 88ºC (179ºF to 190ºF). This causes the oil to bypass the core
assembly.

ENGINE OIL INDICATING

DESCRIPTION/OPERATION

1. General

Each engine has an oil pressure/temperature indicating system. The system

gives data to the multifunction display system (MFDS).

3. Description

Each system has an oil pressure transmitter and oil temperature sensor.

4. Component Description

A. Oil Pressure Transmitter

The transmitter is installed on the RH side of the engine gear box

casing. Its function is to sense oil pressure and send a signal to
the MFDS.

B. Oil Temperature Sensor

The sensor is installed in the engine oil supply line. Its function
is to sense the oil temperature and send a signal to the MFDS.

5. Operation (Fig. 2)

During engine operation the oil pressure is sensed by a diaphragm in the

oil pressure transmitter. Movement of the diaphragm causes a signal to be
sent to the MFDS which in turn displays the oil pressure. Changes in the
temperature of the oil are sensed by a coil in the temperature sensor. An
increase or decrease in the temperature causes the resistance of the coil
to change. This change is converted to a signal which is then sent to the
MFDS.
