The Quote of The Most Dangerous Game
Have you ever been the hunted? The Most Dangerous Game is a Short Story written by
Richard Connell that reveals the most dangerous game. In the short story Rainsford changes
between the two classes, the hunted and hunters. Rainford’s view of quote changes as he thinks
he is a hunter, but as he is hunted his perspective changes.
Rainsford’s opinion changes as the short story develops. He knows that he is a hunter. He
sees that he is powerful, strong, and striking. Talking to Whitney, Rainsford states, “The world is
made up of two classes- the hunters and the hunted. Luckily, you and I are the hunters,” page 28.
This means that the world is divided up into the attackers and the ones being attack, and that
Rainsford is the attacker. It’s important because he will reign in power, but not so good, because
he thinks he is the best. That is Rainsford first perspective in The Most Dangerous Game.
Later in the story, Rainsford starts to grasp the feeling of being hunted. General Zaroff
makes a point that he hunts humans, and that Rainsford is one of them. “Then he ran for his life.
The hounds raised their voices as they hit the fresh scent. Rainsford now knew how an animal at
bay feels,” page 41. When General Zaroff and Rainsford started to hunt each other, Zaroff
trained dogs to chase after humans. After being chased Rainsford now knew how it felt like to be
the prey or the bate. That is how Rainsford felt while being hunted.
Finally, Rainsford’s overall view has changed. He started as a hunter, thinking he is the
best. Then becoming the hunted. In the end Zaroff told Rainsford that he had won. Rainsford

said, “I am still a beast at bay,” page 42. He meant that he was the beast; defeating Zaroff
declared that for him. He also said that he was at bay, still feeling targeted. Rainsford feels like
the pray, while proclaiming himself as a hunter. Now, Rainsford understands both classes.
Rainsford’s perspective of the quote changes, at first thinking he is the hunter, then being
the hunted, and his overall view. Rainsford was one of the best hunters. Suddenly he met General
Zaroff, who hunted humans and tried to hunt Rainsford. He beat Zaroff and understands each
side. In conclusion, Rainsford’s outlook changes as he recognizes both classes.
