APRIL 2025
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
In recent years, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into educational contexts

has gained significant momentum, with tools like ChatGPT becoming increasingly

prevalent. ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is a language model based on the GPT

(Generative Pre-trained Transformer) architecture. It is designed to understand and

generate human-like text based on the input it receives. By leveraging a vast dataset

encompassing a wide range of topics, ChatGPT can provide responses that simulate a

conversational partner, offering explanations, answering questions, and engaging in

dialogue on various subjects.

As stated by Atlas (2023), ChatGPT is a conversational AI model designed to

generate human-like text based on the input it receives. Built upon advanced language

processing techniques and large-scale data sets, ChatGPT can engage in a variety of

task, such as providing explanations, answering questions, assisting with writing and

problem solving. Its capabilities make it a versatile tool in educational environments,

where it can act as a tutor, a source of information, and a collaborator in academic work.

Using ChatGPT is common among students who typically interact with the AI

through a chat interface, as they input text queries or prompts. ChatGPT responds with

text-based answers explanations or suggestions. It can be accessed via various

platforms, including web applications and integrated tools within educational software.

For effective use, students can input specific questions, seek help with homework, or

request classifications on various subjects. The AI’s responses are generated based on

patterns and knowledge divided from its training data, allowing for dynamic and

contextually relevant interactions. (Walker, 2022).

While ChatGPT offers numerous educational benefits. It also presents serval

potential drawback. First, reliance on the AI for information. And assistance might

diminish student’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as they might become

accustomed to seeking quick and was rather than engaging deeply with the material.

Additionally, there is the risks of students encountering incorrect or misleading

information, as the AI’s responses are not infallible and are based on pre-existing data

rather than real time verification. Furthermore, overuse of ChatGPT could lead to

decreased academic integrity, with students potentially using the AI to complete

assignments dishonestly rather than developing their own understanding. Privacy and

data security concerns of personal information, necessitating careful management to

protect students’ data. (Gonzales, 2024)

As observed by the researchers, students' in Santisimo Rosario Integrated High

School, started in relying too heavily on ChatGPT AI for their academic needs. Students

can become less critical in their thinking and may not question the information presented

to them by ChatGPT. This can result in students accepting answer even the given

information is incorrect. It can lead students’ neglecting the development of crucial

problem-solving and critical thinking skills because they use and relying too much on

ChatGPT AI. ChatGPT's ability to generate the text that makes the students to copy and

paste responses without understanding the text. When students rely on predefined

responses generated by ChatGPT, they may struggle to develop their own ideas and

creative problem-solving abilities.

The pros and cons of the utilization of ChatGPT led the researchers to conduct a

study to understand better it’s potential effects among students of Santisimo Rosario
Integrated High School. It intended to quantitatively collect students’ experiences and

later on, understand its impact towards their learning.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into educational contexts has gained

significant traction over the past decade, with ChatGPT emerging as a prominent tool due

to its advanced natural language processing capabilities. Since its inception, ChatGPT

has been employed in various educational settings, sparking considerable interest in

understanding its influence on student learning and engagement. This review explores

the existing literature on the impact of ChatGPT AI, focusing specifically on Grade 10

Students through a Phenomenology lens.

AI applications like ChatGPT have the potential to make people’s lives easier and

help with tedious tasks that are not conducive to intellectual development, such as email

writing and endless web searches. Internet for information. Teachers can use Chat GPT

to promote personalized learning by assigning tailored tasks and deploying them as a

virtual teaching assistant that is always available. This approach boosts student

participation and promotes language learning through interactive conversations.

However, to avoid over-reliance on technology, teachers should maintain human

connections and use Chat GPT as a supplement, not a replacement. They should also

address the potential spread of misinformation by teaching critical thinking and digital

literacy skills. Kemper (2023) emphasized that teachers should share knowledge with

students about AI’s capabilities and potential bias and should emphasize privacy and data

protection by following regulations and obtaining consent. Balancing the positive and

negative aspects of Chat GPT within the classroom is important. By exploiting its benefits

while maintaining human interaction and managing potential concerns, teachers can build

effective, unique, and responsible learning environments for their students during of AI.

The use of ChatGPT raises serious concerns regarding the future of AI in

education and various industries. Although ChatGPT can create essays, art, participate

in philosophical discussion, and write code for specific tasks, this raises questions

regarding its impact on education (Rege et al., 2023). One of the drawbacks is that it can

hinder students’ writing progress and their skills when they rely on this technology.

Moreover, not all schools and educational programs have modern technology, so it is

difficult to detect when students are using tools like ChatGPT.

According to Grassini (2023), in education, ChatGPT has potential positive effects,

but it is also necessary to remember some important problems associated with it. One of

the main concerns is the uncertainty in the quality of the information it produces. This is

because ChatGPT comes from a vast collection of unstructured and unsalted data, which

can cause errors and does not always provide correct or true information. This can have

serious consequences when students use it in their schoolwork, as they may not realize

that their outputs may contain false information. Another problem is rooted in the

widespread use of Al writing tools such as ChatGPT, where it causes plagiarism by

students. Due to the ease of use of these tools for text creation, some of the students are

led to not properly acknowledge or record their sources, which casts doubt on the integrity

of the educational process. To combat this, teachers use specialized computer programs

to identify cases of plagiarism by comparing works submitted by students from different

sources to identify similarities.

Another major issue is rooted in students using ChatGPT in their assignments,

where they are more likely to use shortcuts that may encourage bad behavior or academic

dishonesty (Grassini, 2023). Due to the tool's ability to produce high-quality text easily,

some students are motivated to take shortcuts or incorrectly copy ideas, which can have

a serious impact on the integrity of academic institutions. It can also affect the primary

purpose of assessments, which aim to identify and reflect real student learning. Moreover,

there is a threat of unfair importance being shown in the field of education, where students

with access to ChatGPT may have an unfair advantage compared to their fellow students.

Such a situation can cause grades and recognition to be misrepresented in the academic

world, taxing hard work and effort in education. To solve these challenges, meaningful
education about the proper use of AI in the field of education is essential. It is also

necessary for teachers to be prepared to find effective ways to accurately determine

student performance, even as the use of AI tools becomes more widespread, to ensure

that the teaching and learning process remains effective.

As stated by Gonzales (2022) ChatGPT is similar to automated chat services found

on customer service websites, because people can ask questions or request clarification

on ChatGPT’s answers. ChatGPT stands for “Generative pre trained Transformer which

refers to how ChatGPT processes requests and generates responses. ChatGPT is

trained with reinforcement learning through human feedback models and reward ranking

the best responses. This feedback helps ChatGPT in machine learning to improve future

responses. Artificial Intelligence ChatGPT is an advance technology used mostly by

students because it can answer all our questions so it will be a big help to us because it

makes all our answers easier, but it is abused by most people because they just rely on

Al and they no longer give effort and take time in answering the questions.

Through ChatGPT it can enhance learning, it may also have negative effects.

Over-reliance on AI for personalized learning might reduce critical thinking skills if

students become accustomed to receiving immediate, tailored answers rather than

engaging in problem-solving on their own. There is also a risk of reinforcing biases if the

AI inadvertently provides skewed or incorrect information based on its training data.

Additionally, excessive personalization could lead to a lack of exposure to diverse

perspectives and learning approaches, potentially limiting students' ability to adapt to

varied educational contexts. Furthermore, disparities in access to technology and internet

connectivity could exacerbate existing educational inequalities, making it challenging for

some students to benefit from the personalized support provided by ChatGPT. It is crucial

to address these potential drawbacks by promoting balanced use of AI and ensuring

equitable access to technology.

According to Kamps (2022) ChatGPT works through its generative pre-trained

transformer, experts use algorithms to find patterns within data sequences. ChatGPT

originally uses the GPT-3 large language model, a neutral network machine learning

model and the third-generation generative pre-trained transformer. The transformer pulls

from a significant amount of data to generate a response. Building Al is hard because it

uses an algorithm to find patterns within data sequences so it can answer all our

questions.

While the use of ChatGPT among the students can present several negative

effects. One significant issue is the digital divide, where students from lower socio-

economic backgrounds might lack the necessary technology or internet access to fully

engage with ChatGPT, exacerbating existing educational inequalities. Additionally, while

ChatGPT aims to be inclusive, its effectiveness can be limited for students with specific

disabilities, such as those with severe visual impairments or cognitive challenges, if the

AI is not properly optimized with assistive technologies. The reliance on text-based

interactions might also be a barrier for students who require alternative formats, such as

audio or visual content, to fully understand the material. Moreover, if ChatGPT’s

responses are not sufficiently tailored to meet diverse needs, some students might find

the information less accessible or comprehensible, potentially hindering their learning

experience. Addressing these challenges requires ongoing efforts to ensure that AI tools
are designed with accessibility in mind and that all students have equitable opportunities

to benefit from such technologies. (Gonzales, 2022).

The positive impact was evident in students’ achievements in terms of generation

of focused ideas, better connection among ideas and sentences, and improved

grammatical accuracy, which were also claimed by previous researchers (Allagui, 2023;

Kohnke et al., 2023; Su et al., 2023; Wang & Guo, 2023).

The use of ChatGPT and other AI technologies has a profound impact on the

English performance of students. On the positive side, students have immediate access

to information, explanations and essays on their English subjects, which accelerates their

learning and expands their knowledge. These tools can help better understand some

differ English words, do better research, and perform their English tasks faster.

On the other hand, over-reliance on AI can pose some challenges. This may result

in a decrease in students’ ability to think critically and solve problems on their own.

Constantly relying on ChatGPT AI for quick answers and solutions can lead to a lack of

training of their own thinking and creative skills. Proper use and training are therefore

essential to ensure that students are not only dependent on technology but actively

contributing to their learning and development. In additional, it can affect the English

performance of students, because It can cause a bad effect on their English performance

because of the cheating they are doing.
