ANNUAL EXAMINATION 2023-24 (SET-2)

STD.- IX
SUB.- ENGLISH
Max. Marks: 70 Time: 3 Hr. 15 Mins.
Instructions:
1. First 15 mins are allotted for the candidates to read the question paper.
2. All questions are compulsory.
3. This question paper has two parts - Part A and Part B.
4. Part A consists of 20 multiple choice questions of one mark each .
5. Marks of the questions are mentioned against them.
6. Part B consists of descriptive type questions of 50 marks.
7. All the questions of Part B are to be attempted all at a time.

An old man was distressed because his sons always quarrelled with one another. One day he
called them to him and showed them a bundle of sticks tied together. He asked if anyone of
them was strong enough to break them. First one and then another tried, but they all failed.
He then untied the bundle and told them to break each stick separately. This they did easily
and all the sticks were soon broken into pieces. Thus, he taught them that united they would
be strong, but disunited they would always be weak.

21. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions given below:
Water is one of the most important natural resource. With the rising population there has been an
increasing pressure on this earth's resource. Scarcity of water has been felt throughout the country.
Efforts have been made to collect water by building dams. Wells have also been dug to create
ground water structure. But that is not enough. Wise conservation of water is needed. One of the
most popular ways of conservation is rain water harvesting. It means collecting rain water on the
roofs of buildings and storing it underground for later use. This method can raise the level of ground
water and also increase water supply. Another method is waste water harvesting. Water from
kitchens and bathrooms is collected and cleaned. It can then be used for purposes other than
drinking.
