2. Scope

Shanthi Gears takes advantage over many years of accumulated expertise and experience in designing and
manufacturing of transmission products. This expertise results in a series of speed reducing Planetary Gear Units,
offering high load carrying capacities, increased efficiency, quiet running and reliability.
The wide ranges of Shanthi Planetary gears are designed for industrial applications. The modular design,
high efficiency, simple mounting and high quality enables to serve all the industries from agriculture to aircraft
manufacturers. The optimised torque performance and high load carrying capacity, with a fine progressive series
covering a nominal torque range between 4,000 to 15,04,000 Nm serves wide range of customers. Shanthi gears
also provide a wide range of accessories for input, output and mounting which best suites the customer
requirement and application.
Shanthi gears team of design engineers and planning make sure that optimum solution with regard to
technology and efficiency are quickly realised for customer requirements that cannot be met with the standard
products.
Details:
Types and transmission ratios
The representations on pages 1, illustrate the standard types and the irrespective transmission ratio ranges.
For actual ratios, refer pages 37-39.
Housing
Heavily loaded housing parts are made out of spheroidal graphite cast iron. All other parts are made out of grey
cast iron. Other materials requirements on parts are made on request.
Gear teeth
• Sun and planet gears have spur gear teeth and are made out of CrNiMo case hardened alloy steel.
• Annulus gears are mostly quenched and tempered and shaped or ground, depending on the size.
• Bevel gears are case-hardened and, depending on the size, lapped or ground.
• The gears and gear shafts of the primary gear stages have helical teeth and are case hardened and ground.
The gear teeth are designed with long life, fatigue-resistant according to the stated nominal torques. If the
application factors are correct, then the teeth can be placed theoretically under load as often as required. In cases
of applications, with variable torque and constant speed the gear unit can be designed on the basis of equivalent
torque (Examples given on pages 08 -11). A gear unit design which is finite-life fatigue- resistant is sufficient for
certain applications, for example, sporadic operation (lock-gate drives) or low output speeds i.e (n2 < 4 min -1 ) . We
would be pleased to help you check whether your selection is correct and to calculate the precise service life, so
far as the precise application factors are known.
Bearing arrangements
Gears and shafts are supported by amply dimensioned rolling bearings.
Input side
The shafts are designed to mount couplings or pulleys.
Output side
Hollow and solid shafts with involute splines. Designs are possible
Direction of rotation
The specified directions of rotation refer to output shaft d2 (Viewed from shaft end face)

Seals
Input and output shafts have radial shaft seals as standard. For special applications we provide seals with
refillable labyrinth.

Lubrication / Oil quantities / Mounting position


Lubrication in most instances is by the transfer of oil to the mesh points by gear dipping in the sump of Gear Unit
bottom half. Wherever high pitch line speeds causing detrimental churning of lubricant are encountered, forced
lubrication system is provided for effective spraying of oil to the mesh points. Quantity of oil for normal dip / splash
lubrication is given in the dimension tables. For grade of oil please refer "Guidelines for Selection" sheet.
In case of forced lubrication, extreme ambient temperatures and other specific features, please contact us.
The exact quantity of oil depends on the marks on the oil level monitoring equipment.

Cooling
Up to the limit of thermal capacity (Refer pages 14 - 32) the units are cooled by radiation and convection from the
surface of the housing.
Weights, dimensions
The stated weights are guide values.
Illustrations and dimensions are not strictly binding.
All data are subject to change without notice.
Operating conditions
The ambient temperatures must be known so that they can be taken into consideration when designing for
thermal conditions. Where ambient temperatures are below -10 °C, the factors affecting the oil and the materials
for the gear unit components must be sufficiently taken into consideration. Please contact us. Environmental
conditions such as salt water, salt-laden air, aggressive substances, dust, mud, falling or flying stones, excessive
pressure, heavy vibrations, and extreme shock loads must be made known.
Starting up, maintenance and safety notes
Information given in the operating instructions, in effect at the time is binding.
Delivery
Shanthi- Planetary gear units are supplied ready for installation, given in info below.
The gear housings are protected against corrosion and lacquered. Shaft-mounted gear units are supplied with a
shrink disk as standard, but without a guard.
For gear units supplied with:
• a torque arm on on e side, the coupling rod and t he two self-aligning plain bearings as well as pins,
spacers and circlips are included in the delivery.
• a torque arm on two sides, the Metalastic bushes are included in the delivery.

Preservation
The internal preservation of Shanthi-Planetary gear units depends on the oil used. For gear units with corrosion
prevention, the following storage times are possible:
Standard preservation: up to 6 months
Long-term preservation: up to 24 months (Only if mineral oil or synthetic oil on PAO basis is used)
up to 36 months (Only if synthetic oil on PG basis is used)
If the storage periods mentioned are exceeded, the anti-corrosive agent in the gear unit has to be renewed. The
projecting shaft ends and machined surfaces are also protected against corrosion.
Further notes
For shaft-mounted gear units with torque reaction arm, the connection of the torque reaction arm on the
foundation must permit the gear unit to move corresponding to the displacement of the machine shaft at any time,
without constraining forces acting on the gear unit. In case of foot-mounted gear units with solid shaft the provided
coupling between gear unit and prime mover must also be suitable for movability.
INFORMATION
• The illustrations in the catalogue are example. Final dimension are available from SHANTHI-GEARS on request
• Oil fill quantities are recommended values. Use the marks on the oil dipstick or oil level glass to determine the oil
level.
• The gear units are ready for operation when delivered, but are not filled with oil.
• Oil viscosity and grade must comply with those specified on the nameplate.
• The specified weight data are guide values.
• The buyer must provide protection against unintentional contact with moving parts. The applicable safety
regulations of the country in which the unit will be used are to be followed.

4. Guidelines for the selection

4.1 Constant power rating

1. Selection of gear unit type and size

2. Calculate the required thermal capacity PG

2.1 Gear unit utilization

Utilization % = P2 / PN x 100

The factor f14 can be obtained from table 5, on page 07, relative to the percentage utilization

2.2 Gear units without auxiliary cooling,

If P2 ≤ PG = PG1 x f4 x f14 then no auxiliary cooling is needed.

2.3 External air cooler or water cooler can be supplied on request if higher thermal capacity are needed.

Guidelines for the selection

4.2 Variable power rating

If driven machines run with constant speeds and variable ratings, then the gear units can be
designed according to the equivalent power rating.
For this, a working cycle where phases I, II…n require power PI, PII…Pn and the respective
power ratings operate for time fractions XI, XII…Xn is taken as a basis.
The equivalent power rating can be calculated for these specifications with the following formula:

When PN is selected, the power and time fractions must be checked as follows

* The individual power fractions PI, PII…Pn must be greater than 0.4 x PN
* The individual power fractions PI, PII...Pn must be less than 1.4 x PN
* If power fractions PI, PII…Pn are greater than PN, the sum of time fractions XI, XII…Xn must not
exceed 10%. If any one of the above condition is not met, then Preq and Peq must be recalculated.
The peak power rating Pmax is not considered while calculating P2eq but has to equal to 2•PN
