3.3 Describing places past and present
Question 3: Read the text and choose the best answer. There is one example.
Akira’s city
First, I’m going to show you a photo taken from the outside of Shimbashi Station in 1965.
Tokyo’s metro (0) ……..opened…….. in 1927, so it’s been an important form of transport for
many years. Before trains, most people used a horse and cart or they (1) ________ to
transport their goods from one place to another. However, rich people travelled around
the city in a ‘Jinrikisha,’ a human-drawn carriage. My grandad lived in a wooden house

Next, I’m going to show you a photo of modern day Tokyo. I think it’s very different! It is
one of the largest cities in the world – 13.5 million people live there! Look how busy the

train. Tokyo has the busiest train network in the world and the Shinkansen (the bullet train)
which can travel up to 320km/h, connects Tokyo with many other major cities. There are

– just eight metres square! Why don’t you measure it out on your classroom floor to see
