Math Notes: Fractions
A fraction is a way to represent part of a whole. It is written as one number over another:
- Numerator: The top number, showing how many parts are taken.
- Denominator: The bottom number, showing how many total parts exist.
Examples:
- 1/2 means one out of two equal parts.
- 3/4 means three out of four equal parts.
Types of Fractions:
- Proper fraction: numerator < denominator (e.g., 3/5).
- Improper fraction: numerator > denominator (e.g., 7/4).
- Mixed number: whole number and fraction combined (e.g., 2 ½).
Operations with Fractions:
- Addition: If denominators are the same, add numerators (e.g., 2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5).
- Subtraction: Same denominator rule (e.g., 5/8 - 3/8 = 2/8 = 1/4).
- Multiplication: Multiply numerators together and denominators together (e.g., 2/3 × 4/5 =
8/15).
- Division: Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second (e.g., 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 ×
5/2 = 15/8).
Fractions are used in everyday life for cooking, measuring, time, and money.
