Abstract:
Navamsha has very high importance in Vedic Astrology. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra while
analysing Shotasha Varga (16 divisions of the Rasi Chart) states that Navamsha Chart is the most important one,
after the Rasi Chart. While calculating the vimshopaka bala , the Navamsha chart is considered in all the vargas.
Rasi Chart gets the maximum points of strength in the calculation and the next divisional chart is the Navamsha
Chart. This indicates the position of planets in the Navamsha chart which is very important in any type of
predictions. Every astrologer and the books of astrology stress the use of Navamsha. Navamsha is added in
every horoscope. Normally it remains over looked and often remains just a decorative chart. Therefore, budding
astrologers are at a loss to understand the use of Navamsha. Navamsha chart is of tremendous predictive use.
Profound astrologers even say that a prediction given without considering Navamsha is like committing a crime.
Although navamsha is seen to predict marriage, this is not the only the use of Navamsha. In fact it has been
given more weight than even the birth chart by Parashara. It is a complete chart to assess the strength of planets.
It is called the perpetual chart. It helps in confirmation of any promise of birth chart. The understanding of
dasha results are finetuned with the help of Navamsha. The religious devotion is also seen from Navamsha.

Navamsha is the ninth division of a sign. Each Navamsha division measures 3°- 20’ which is also the
one fourth of a nakshatra called pada. There are 108 Navamshas in total. It is also known as Dharmamsha. It is
an important divisional chart. There are four methods of casting Navamsha chart.
First Method:
The counting of Navamsha starts from the movable sign of the triad in which the planet is placed in the
birth chart. There are four triads namely: fiery, earthy, airy, and watery. Each next Navamsha occupy next sign
in direct order.

Second Method:
For movable signs, the first Navamsha occupy the sign itself. For fixed signs, the first Navamsha
occupy the ninth sign from itself. For dual signs, the first Navamsha occupy the fifth sign from itself. The other
Navamsha follows in direct order.
Third Method:
Multiply the longitude of the planet (including sign) by nine. Expunge multiples of 12 signs. The
resultant is the longitude of the planet in navamshsa. For example we take Sun placed at 160 20’ in Aries.
Multiply 160 20’ by 9. We get 147 degrees. It is four signs completed and current sign is fifth. Sun is in Leo
Navamsha.
Fourth Method:
Note the number of signs in the previous house to the planet. Multiply this number by nine. Add the
number of Navamsha occupied by planet. Expunge multiplies of 12 from the sum, so obtained. The result is the
sign occupied by planet in Navamsha. For example we take Sun placed at 160 20’ in Aries. Pisces is the
previous sign to Aries. Multiply by 9. We get 108 degrees. Sun is in fifth Navamsha. Add five to 1080 to get
1130. Expunge 1080 and the sign occupied by Sun in Navamsha is 5. Thus Sun is in Leo in navamsha.
Pushkar Navamsha:
Pushkar Navamsha are twenty four. Each sign has two Pushkar Navamsha and are the special areas of a
sign. Any planet placed in this area gets its qualities enhanced and acquire the potential to give good results of
its significations. These are the benefic Navamsha and lorded by the benefics in Navamsha. Any planet

occupying this Navamsha goes to the signs of four benefics Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, and Moon. Jupiter and
Venus have nine each. Moon and Mercury have three each of the 24 Pushkar Navamshas. No Pushkar
Navamsha falls in the sign of Sun, Mars and Saturn in D9.

Nakshatra of Jupiter and Sun contain six Pushkar Navamsa each out of total twelve Navamsa.
Nakshatra of Venus, Moon, Raghu, and Saturn contribute three Pushkar Navamsa each. The Nakshatra of Ketu,
Mercury and Mars do not contain any Pushkar Navamsa. Only three Navamsa are vargottam and pushkar at the
same time. These are fifth in Taurus, first in Cancer and ninth in Sagittarius.
Placement in pushkar Navamsa enhances the significations of the planet. For example Jupiter is the
significator of wealth. When Jupiter is in pushkar Navamsa and the sign occupied by Jupiter in Navamsa falls in
Kendra or trikona of the birth chart then the person is very wealthy and lucky. In case, this sign is in sixth, eight
or twelfth, then along with wealth, it gives disease, bereavement, or separation (Chandra kala nadi)

Thus the planet acquires the goodness and acts through the house occupied by its Navamsa in the birth
chart. Planets in pushkar Navamsa are benefic and produce favourable results in Muhurat, Horary also. Some
rules for application of pushkar Navamsa are as follows:
 Dasha of planets in Pushkar Navamsa is favourable and five results of the house of its placement.
 Planets aspected by planets in Pushkar Navamsa also give favourable results.
 More planets in Pushkar Navamsa lift the level of horoscope.
 Placement of Pushkar Navamsa planet is Navamsa is of maximum importance.
Vargottam Navamsha:
Vargottam Navamsa is also considered a highly favourable placement. When a planet occupies same
sign in Navamsa which was occupied by it in birth chart then the placement is called Vargottam Navamsa.
Even when a planet is debilitated in birth chart and remains debilitated in Navamsa still it is praised.
Vish Navamsha:
Certain Navamsa position of planets is termed as Vish Navamsa. These are:
 First Navamsa of Aries, Taurus, Virgo and Sagittarius. These are also called Sarp Navamsa.
 Fifth Navamsa of Gemini, Leo, Libra and Aquarius. These are also called Grida Navamsa.
 Ninth Navamsa of Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces. These are also called Shookar Navamsa.
Any planet placed in these Navamsa is harmful to the relative signified by the planet. If Moon occupy
any of these Navamsa then it brings harm to mother.
Deities of Navamsa:
There are three lords of Navamsa chart. They are Deva, Nara, and Rakshasa. A planet in the movable
Navamsa is Deva, in fixed Navamsa it is Nara and is Rakshasa in a dual sign.
Deva (Divine, godly) – A planet in Deva Navamsa is calm and have pious nature. He like to give and
share his significations with others.
Nara (Human) - Her is next to Deva. The person is practical and has down to earth approach to life.
Rakshasa (Demon and evil) - He can be rash and sometime even turn violent. He is materialistic. He
likes to possess everything for himself. He is hard working under any situation.
The most common use of Navamsa is to assess the strength of planet. Generally a well-placed planet
and in status in Navamsa chart is considered strong and gives auspicious results.
 Planet exalted in the Navamsa chart is considered best even when it is debilitated in birth chart.
 Any planet debilitated in Navamsa give bad results even when it is exalted in birth chart.
 A vargottam planet is strong. It gives name and fame. Even a debilitated vargottam planet gives
wealth, fame but with some problems like health or mental tensions.
 Planets in the signs of benefic planets are strong.
 Planets in Navamsa occupying the signs of Kendra/trikona of birth chart are auspicious.
 The Navamsha are further classified as Dhrid, Dhridh-adhrid and Adiridh. The fixed sign in Navamsa
are dhrid, and dual are dridh-adhrid and the movable are adridh. The prarabdha signified by dridh
cannot be changed, those signified by dual can be changed with effort and the one signified by movable
signs can be changed with little effort.
Matters Related to Marriage:
There are some basic rules regarding marriage. In a horoscope 7th house is the house of marriage. We
have Lord of seventh house and a karaka of seventh house. The significations and the area rules by each of them
are:
 Seventh house is the house that governs marriage. The promise of marriage is seen from this house.
 The seventh lord is the owner of the house. His responsibility is to look after the house. An afflicted
lord will not be able to look after the house. Well-connected lord will manage the house well.
 The karaka of marriage for male is Venus. The karaka of marriage for female is Jupiter. Venus also
represents the lust and luxury for both sexes. The sexual energy of male is controlled by Venus. The
sexual energy of female is controlled by Mars. Karaka is the inner beauty in marriage. It is not the
physical charm but the caring attitude.
Kaala Purush:
Kaala purush chart is the basic chart. This chart gives a lot of information through the ownership,
exaltation, and debilitation signs of planets in this chart. We may understand this in reference to seventh house.
This applies to Navamsa as well.
 Exaltation – Saturn gets exalted in seventh house. Exalted planet gives ego and status in marriage.
 Debilitation – Sun is debilitated in seventh house. It gives no ego or status in marriage.
 Lord – Venus is the sign of seventh house in kaala purush chart. Venus is the owner and is responsible
to maintain this house.
 Sign – Libra is the sign of seventh house in kaala purush chart. Libra is also seen for promise and
quality of marriage.

 Jupiter – Jupiter is exalted in fourth house. It is therefore significator of happiness in marriage. Jupiter
is debilitated in tenth house.
 Sun – Sun is exalted in lagna. Exalted Sun gives ego in marriage life.
 Mars – Mars is exalted in tenth house and gives authority in marriage life.
 Venus – Venus exalts in twelfth house of bed room.
 Mercury –Mercury is exalted in sixth house and causes rift in marriage life.
Conformity of Marriage:
Seventh house is the house of marriage. The promise is marriage is seen from seventh house. It is not
the purview of seventh lord as seen by many. The promise is checked first in birth horoscope. The seventh
house can be unoccupied and unaspected. There can be a malefic relation but it should have a benefic relation.
The lagna lord and seventh lord even when a malefic their association with seventh house can still promise
marriage. Association of only benefics with seventh house is good for promise of marriage. Now we check the
lagna and seventh house of Navamsqa. Lagna is the desire of marriage. The lagna should have benefic relation
to make a person desirous of getting married. Seventh house of Navamsa is the house of marriage. It should
meet conditions as discussed for birth horoscope. The sign Libra is also seen for its association and aspect.

Seventh house of birth chart is not having any planet. It is accepted by Saturn. Saturn is considered
malefic but not for this horoscope since it is lagna lord also. The promise of marriage is present. In Navamsa the
seventh house is vacant and not aspected by any planet. It is not a denial but seventh house is average and have
no malefic relation. Lagna also is vacant and not aspected. Libra is occupied by Moon and aspected by Jupiter.
Jupiter is benefic and is lagna lord. Marriage is promised.
Quality of Marriage:
It is noted that karaka of marriage is the beauty of marriage and gives a clue about quality of marriage.
 The karaka of marriage is checked in birth horoscope and Navamsa. It should not have malefic
association. It can be debilitated but should not be afflicted. One affliction is tolerable. More
afflictions spoil the marriage. Benefic association improves the quality of marriage. Navamsa is the
final outcome.
 Two or more benefic association with seventh house also enhances quality of marriage. This is seen in
birth chart and Navamsa chart.
 A combination in Trimshamsha and birth horoscope provides good information about quality of
marriage. When sign of Saturn or Mars or Sun rises in lagna of Trimshamsha and these planets also
influence lagna of birth horoscope then the marriage is disturbed. The problem is manifold if Sun or
Moon occupy birth lagna and have malefic relation. When these are replaced by benefics then
marriage is a quality marriage.
Sometimes marriage starts on a happy relation but turns bad over a period. The reverse is also true.
We should also check this. The birth horoscope and Navamsa are consulted for this. The Navamsa is Shashvat

chart and show the ultimate condition. When quality is good in birth chart and is bad in Navamsa then the
relations turn sour over a period. When it is not so good in birth chart but is good in Navamsa then relations
improve after some time. With a practical small example we can understand what is Navamsa. Television which
we watch every day in our house is connected with a cable setup box. The setup box provided by the cable
company is connected with the television using HDMI cable

The TV is the producer of the final result. The quality of picture is coming from the TV, it is high
definition, good sound quality which makes you enjoy the complete picture what you are watching. So this TV
is exhibiting the final result so that you can watch and enjoy. But this TV is depended on the cable setup box to
receive its signal. If your cable setup box cannot send signal properly to your TV the picture quality will be
poor inspite of you have a world class TV at our home. Expensive TV, LED, high definition TV at our home if
the cable company which has provided the setup box to watch all the programs, we use to see there that does not
have the good quality to render good picture, high definition picture you will not enjoy complete pictures on our
TV watching all your favourite pictures even if the TV is most expensive one. We must understand that to enjoy
complete picture which we want to watch three factors which play very important role:
 Quality of TV itself, picture tube, sound quality, speaker box and high definition LED.
 The broadcast which is coming from your cable setup box through our satellite dish antenna which is
receiving the broadcast and then rendering it on our TV. If this is of bad quality you will not enjoy the
quality of picture. If this is of a good quality you enjoy as well as our TV is also good.
 HDMI cable, if this cable is not good, inspite of you are getting a good broadcast our TV is receiving a
good signal and high quality but the HDMI cable is not rendering the output quality of signal to our TV
we will not be able to enjoy the good quality of picture.
These three important factors are must to enjoy best quality of picture you preferred, cable setup box
connected to dish antenna, TV, and HDMI cable. Now in the world of astrology TV is our lagna chart
exhibiting our karma shown in our lagna chart. What you receiving from the cosmos, how your soul is acting,
what kind of strength and weakness we receive from the different planets in the zodiac, how your subconscious
is feeling, how our mind is feeling, how our energy internally sending the signal to our physical body to go and
act to be decided by this cable setup box i.e. Navamsa chart.

Normally the best way to read D9 chart is first overlay the D9 chart on the top of Lagna Chart. Inner
chart is natal chart and outer chart is Navamsa chart. Then we may see what are the energy we receive on each
house of life, each division of your life from the Navamsa chart. The first thing we have to see, do we have any
planet in vargottam. Vargottam means a planet which is in the same sign in both lagna as well as in the
Navamsa chart. In Shri Narendra Modi’s chart Venus is in the sign of Leo in the lagna chart and it also in the
sign of Leo in the D9 chart. How many planets you have in your chart as vargottam, that is very important point.
Vargottam planets are the planets which give you good results. So, vargottam planets are considered to be high
definition channel, they are receiving good energy, good light from the D9 and good signal in rendering it you
physical soul. If you have one or more planets in vargottam you can say that are very auspicious. They will give
you good results unless they connected themself or through the nakshatras 6-8-12. You can also check the
strength of the planet Venus in vargottam, the strength is 93, but still it gives good result, because it is as
vargottam receiving the good energy and good rendering power to give auspicious results to this person Shri

After you looking vargottam planet who they are, where they are sitting you come to your basic chart
Pushkaramsha. It is in certain degree in zodiac signs. If your planets sit in those points they are consider to be
sitting in Pushkaramsha, which is another very auspicious degree arc on the zodiac belt. These planets are going
to give you good result if they have no connection with 6-8-12 at the nakshatra level or at the planet level.
You have to see which of the planets are in that arc for you, which is consider to be in the auspicious

get 30 20’. That is why the D9 Navamsa becomes very important. It is not only dividing the zodiac sign into 9 it
is also dividing nakshatras in to four and fitting the planet in those division of the star. That is why the soul of
our life - the setup box - rendering connection to TV which is exhibiting the picture because it is taking
importance of nakshatra also stars association with zodiac sign in constructing D9 chart.

In the lagna chart i.e. in the first house moon and mars are sitting together. In the second house no

connection with the 8th house. Ketu is sitting here is celebrity no intimate relationship. Ketu is detachment in
intimacy and Saturn is the lord of 7th and 8th is sitting in 6th house shows 6th and 8th connection very strongly
that no desire to marriage and lord of 10th which Mars is aspecting this relationship house. 6th, 8th and 10th are
connected. 10th is your social status being considered to be as a single person, denial of marriage. 8th is
whenever he tries to marriage relationship, he will find a pain and problem. From the Navamsa chart prospective
also, the cable setup box the soul is also showing bad connection and from the lagna chart 7 th is connection with
12th and sitting in 10th with no power it shows weakness. That is the reason reading D9 and D1 charts for
marriage aspects and relationship aspects which is showing weak. He will not marry and even if he marry, he

We can see anything in D1 and D9 charts, D9 chart confirm everything what is going to happen in your
lagna chart, what is going to happen in your physical well. As an astrologer you have to unlearn many things
and learn new things. What we have to do is to cherish certain things, this yoga and that yoga, my house is
debilitated and exalted, this planet is functional malefic, functional benefic, it is in the friendly house or in
enemy house - Do not do that. That is why we are confused. Try very simple systematic approach, complete
understanding of our astrology by understanding the fundamental, use our common sense. That is most
important. You do not have to go in to so much of analysis in strength of the planet and friendly house non
friendly house functional benefic, functional malefic and everything is to pick from Shadbala. We are living in
the era of logical, digital, analytical science. If something cannot be proved logically is not a point. We are
living in the era we understand things logically, mathematically digitally using formulae which is taught in our
school days. Our brain, our mind, our subconscious is more understanding thing logically, questioning them,
putting the rationale behind it. We are not very spiritually evolved and we can just close our eyes chat some
mantras and everything will come to us. So unlearn those things and learn the logical way of interpreting the
chart. Use of formulae just like a theorem in mathematics. There is a logic to reach to the hypothesis. Use same
logic every time to get the same result. The Navamsa chart if soul, core of our lagna chart reading this is a must
by every astrologer. This is the same thing happen in the sub lord story also.
