This book simply would not exist without the generous intellectual,
financial, and emotional support of a great many wonderful humans. I’ll try
to pay homage to them all, but perhaps one deserves top billing. Carole Em-
berton and I arrived at the University at Buffalo the same semester. She has
seen me through two degrees, alternately encouraging me and holding my
feet to the fire. When I told her I wanted to write about Joshua Lawrence
Chamberlain, instead of laughing, Carole told me to go for it. Since then,

At my first Society of Civil War Historians meeting, I was convinced
that my paper would be roundly jeered. Instead, I found a wide variety of
scholars ready to answer endless questions, share research tips, give reading

Sommerville’s recommendations helped me to bring the project from dis-
sertation to manuscript, and her eagle eye improved my writing enormously.
Kathryn Shively’s advice helped me to think through Chamberlain’s story

needed encouragement that has helped me stay with this project over the

Many archivists and librarians kindly helped in my research. Jim Folts
at the New York State Archives ushered me through the complicated pro-
cess of accessing restricted asylum patient records, and he read drafts to
ensure they adhered to the requirements of the New York State mental
hygiene laws. Mildred Jones, volunteer archivist of the First Parish Church
in Brunswick, Maine, carved time out of her day for me to peruse Rev.
George Adams’s diaries and gave me a tour of the beautiful church. Former
Pejepscot Historical Society director Jennifer Blanchard and her staff were
incredibly helpful. They even snuck me into an elementary school tour
of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain’s home, which was otherwise closed for
the season. The patient archivists at the National Archives in Washington,
DC, and the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring,
Maryland, helped me navigate many a complicated finding aid.
When I first pitched an essay to a s­ tart-­up history blog called Nursing
Clio in 2013, little did I know that I would find some of my dearest friends:
Jacqueline Antonovich, Lauren McIvor Thompson, Laura Ansley, Amelia
Grabowski, Lizzie Reis, R. E. Fulton, Cassia Roth, Carrie Adkins, Averill
Earls, and Adam Turner. This incredible team has taught me so much, but
more importantly, its members have been a critical emotional support. I am
immensely proud of the work we do and ever thankful for my colleagues’
friendship.
In Buffalo, many miles from my blood family, I was blessed with friends

I have often reflected that in some way, I have been on the path to be-
coming a historian since I was very small. My family members, I think,
knew this before I did, and each of them had a unique way of helping me to
navigate that path. When I was too little to have done anything interesting
at all, my grandmother declared that I would be a w ­ riter—and she was right.
My grandfather gathered talismans, now lining my bookshelves, when he
traveled: a shard of a tree near the Crater, a rail spike from City Point. My
father gave me his copy of John Jakes’s North and South when I was eleven
and his copy of The Killer Angels when I was fifteen, and on nearly every
vacation we dragged the rest of the family to every battlefield within driving
distance. His love of the Civil War became my love of the Civil War. None
of these relatives will get to read this book, but I don’t believe they need to.
They’ve been there every step of the way.
James Cousins is a life partner in the truest sense: he is my best friend, my
co-­parent, the love of my life. He has never doubted me for a moment, and
in many ways, he has shaped his life to make my perhaps foolhardy dreams
