Although they are safe to use in the short term, coal, gas and oil present a long-term (1)
to the environment. All three types of fossil
fuels produce carbon dioxide in far greater quantities than plants can use. The carbon dioxide then
(2) in the atmosphere and may even increase the
earth's “heat load” and lead to global (3) in temperature. Furthermore, all three fossil fuels
are
(4) forms of energy. Geothermal power is (5) ever to be an energy source of major
importance. It is limited and is exploitable in only a few places. Hydro-power offers a much more
useful source of energy. It is also renewable but its (6) is limited. Dams cannot be built in
certain areas. In addition, large dams are also capable of causing changes in the world's climate. Wind
power is a (7) source of renewable energy but it cannot be used in many parts of the world
where there is (8) wind. Wave power is better source of energy in certain ways but it is clearly
not practicable to build dams across every river estuary or to cover seas with expensive equipment. It
is also ineffective where the sea is usually calm. Solar power is renewable, it does not cause pollution
and it does not add to the earth's heat load. Unfortunately, solar power is not distributed equally, and in
the northern latitudes it is difficult to collect and store. Solar power also requires expensive equipment.
Finally, nuclear power provides a very (9) and renewable power source. However, not only is
there a great danger of leaks or accidents but there is also the problem of the (10) of
radioactive waste.

A new variant of the covid-19 virus is beginning to spread worldwide. The WHO (1) the
mutation Omicron, after a letter of the Greek alphabet. It was first reported in Botswana on the 9th of
November. Two weeks later, it was detected in South Africa and flagged (2) a "virus of
concern". Soon after this, (3) were reported in Hong Kong, Israel, Madagascar and Belgium.
Epidemiologists have warned that this new strain could be (4) infectious. They also said
it may be able to evade protections afforded us by (5) vaccines. This has led to countries
reinstating travel bans. Despite these, new cases have already been reported in the UK, Germany and
the Czech Republic.
Scientists are currently analyzing Omicron to (6) the dangers it might pose. They have
detected 50 genetic changes in the DNA (7) affects the spikes surrounding the crown of the
virus. Current vaccines focus on these spikes. Any changes in the DNA of the spikes could make the
virus more virulent, more transmissible and possibly more resistant (8) vaccines. Scientists
say it could take a few weeks to determine (9) effective our vaccines are against Omicron.
The White House's chief medical adviser has warned that when you have a virus that is showing this
(10) of transmissibility, and you're already having travel-related case, it almost invariably is
ultimately going to go all over the world.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
Do you like tuna? People in many countries like to eat tuna whether it is canned, cooked, or raw.
Unfortunately, humans are now eating too much tuna, and some species are becoming rare.
The name "tuna" refers to over 48 species of carnivorous fish that live in Pacific, Atlantic , Indian,
and Mediterranean oceans. The most important commercial species of tuna are yellowfin, bluefin,
bigeye, albacore, and skipjack. Skipjack makes up the majority of canned tuna, while the other species
are served either raw or cooked.
While the fishing of skipjack tuna is currently sustainable, it is widely accepted that the other
species have been severely overfished. In particular, bluefin tuna stocks are now at risk of collapse.
From 1976 to 2006, the population of bluefin decreased by 92%. Overfishing continues despite
repeated warnings. In 2009, scientists recommended that the quota for northern bluefin tuna be set at
7,500 tonnes, but the Atlantic Tuna Commision set it at 16,000 tonnes. Even this limit was ignored,
with the total catch of Atlantic bluefin estimated to be 60,000 tonnes in 2009.
The reason for this overfishing is that yellowfin, bluefin, and bigeye tuna are prized for use as
sashimi (raw fish). This makes them very valuable. In 2011, a bluefin tuna weighing 342 kilograms
was sold in Tokyo for 32.49 million yen (US $396,000). Recently, the sashimi-tuna species have
become so rare, and their price is so high that many sashimi restaurants have had to close.
In response to decreasing tuna stocks, scientists have been trying to breed tuna in captivity. In
2009, an Australian company succeeded in breeding southern bluefin tuna in land-based tanks. This is
an important development because tuna farming currently relies on raising juvenile tuna that are
caught in the wild. Catching these juvenile tuna makes overfishing even worse.
Everyone needs to work together to help the wild tuna survive. You can help to save the wild tuna,
too. Next time you have tuna, check to make sure you aren’t eating a wild bluefin, yellowfin, or
bigeye. Hopefully, if we all play our part, it won’t be too long before stocks of tuna recover to their
former levels.
