“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” –
Matthew 1:21
FIRST DAY: Read Introduction Lesson Notes.
1. Use this space to record how you have seen God’s activity during the week. How has He provided, answered,
comforted, restored, guided, etc.?

2. What from the notes, lecture, or personal study impacted you most in the past week?
Matthew is the book which relates Old Testament prophecy with Jesus. Jesus is the Son of David and King of the Jews.
He appointed by God to reign and rule over all nation on the earth. It changes my perspective of knowing how I should
live. We are not only a citizen of a country, but we are also a citizen of the God’s kingdom!!!! Hope we can learn how
to be a responsibility citizen in the God’s kingdom.

SECOND DAY: Read Matthew 1:1-17.


Matthew presents the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah.
3. Matthew began his book with Jesus’ genealogy. Why might he have done so? What was the importance of
including such names as Abraham, Jacob, and David?
Jesus Christ is the son of David and the son Abraham
Reassured Jesus is the Messiah and he is the King

4. What pattern do you see in the way Matthew organized the names in his list?
From Abraham to David are fourteen generation (1000 years)
And from David to Babylon are fourteen generation (400 years)
And from Babylon to David are fourteen generation (600 years)  42 generations

5. a. Give the background of each woman Matthew mentions in Jesus’ genealogy.


Tamar – Genesis 38 Judah thought she was a prostitute and slept with her and became pregnant by Judah.
Rahab – Joshua 2; 6:17
Rahab had taken two spies and hidden them, only Rahab and all who are with her in her house are spared.
(Rahab is a gentile prostitute woman but become the ancestor of David)
Ruth – Ruth 1; 4:13-17 Ruth clung to Naomi.
She decided to stay with Naomi and went to Bethlehem. Ruth became Boaz wife, and she gave birth to a
son.
(She is a gentile woman, but become the wife of Boaz)
“Wife of Uriah” – 2 Samuel 11; 12:15, 18, 24
Her husband was dead, and her son died on the seventh day, (however she become David’s wife and the
Salomon ‘s mother.)
Mary – Luke 1:26-56
She is a virgin pledged (pathenos) to be married to Joseph, and will give birth to Jesus

b. Why might Matthew have chosen to include these particular women?


They all have extraordinary faith with God.

It seems they are not respected by people, but with god’s grace and mercy, their life are better than other woman and
they all have relationship with Jesus and recorded in bible.

6. How have you experienced God’s grace – blessings you do not deserve?
Yes, UK visa and experience of finding job

THIRD DAY: Read Matthew 1:18-25.


God reassured Joseph and declared the names of His Son.
7 a. How did Joseph respond to Mary’s pregnancy?
He wants to expose her to public disgrace and had in mind to divorce her quietly.

b. What comfort and instructions did God give to Joseph?


God confirm he is the son of David and tell he that not to be afraid to take Mary home as his wife

8. a. What two names did God give to Mary’s Son? What does each name mean?
Jesus – will save his people from their sins
Immanuel – God with us

b. What do both of these aspects of Jesus’ character mean to you?


Jesus is the one who save us from their sins, he is innocent but because of love he is willing to complete my mission
given by God
He promises to be with us and give us pace and give us an assurance
Although he is God because he also suffered the same as human

9. Read John 3:17; Acts 4:12; and Romans 10:9. What does the word “saved” mean to you?
God did not condemn the world; he wants to save the world through him
There is no other one can be saved through Jesus
Jesus is the one who alive from the dead, therefore we can be saved

10. How did Joseph demonstrate his faith?

He woke up and did what the angel of the Lord had commanded
Without any hesitation

FOURTH DAY: Read Luke 1:26-38 to understand God’s plan for Mary.
While Matthew focuses on Joseph, Luke’s account records God’s revelation of His plan to Mary.
11. a. What facts did the angel Gabriel reveal to Mary?
Gabriel told Mary she will conceive and give birth to a son who called Jesus.
The Holy Sprit will come to Mary, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

b. Read Job 33:4; Matthew 1:20, 23; and Luke 1:35. Of whom was Jesus born, besides Mary? Why is this important?
Jesus is sinless, he is created by the Spirit of God (from Holy Spirit)

Therefore, Mary is a virgin will conceive and give birth to a son

12. How did Mary express her faith?


Luke 1:38 she replied by saying she is the Lord’s servant and may god’s word to her be fulfilled

13. How has God worked in your life to build your faith and lead you to surrender to His plan?
to trust his plan is the best
when thing is invisible or unpredictable it is so easy to lose faith
however, when looked back to the things happened in these years, I really understand god prepare the best for us.
As the heavens are higher than the earth, so ae my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
(Isa 55:9)

FIFTH DAY: Reread Matthew 1:1-25.


Jesus’ birth fulfilled prophecy and revealed God’s faithfulness.
14. a. In what ways did Matthew connect Jesus’ birth to Old Testament prophecy in this chapter?
Joseph is the son of David and David is the son of Abraham
Joseph is the exile of Messiah

b. What does this reveal about God?


God has already plan for the salvation finished by Messiah by the time he creates the world

15. In what ways would Joseph and Mary’s steps of faith and obedience have been costly?
For Joseph, according to law, he can divorce Mary quietly. However, he did not want to expose her to public disgrace.
However, he and Mary humbles and immediately act of what the Lord had commanded him to do.

16. When has obeying God been costly for you? How has God met your needs and demonstrated His faithfulness?
Struggling to leave my comfort zone

SIXTH DAY: Review Matthew 1:1-25.


God became a man to enable sinners to live a new life.
17. What truth about Jesus challenged or inspired you this week?

God complete the salvation by some small character
