As it is an interrogative sentence, you must replace “said/ said to” with
“asked”
-No conjunction (that) is used, since the same wh word of the direct speech
itself acts as a conjunction here.
-Turn the interrogative sentence into a statement.
Ex: Kamla said, “Who breaks it?”Kamla asked who broke it.
Step 1:Replace said (+ to) with asked
Step 2:Remove the inverted commas.
Step 3: Write the reported speech (including the Wh word) as an assertive
sentence by removing the question mark (‘?’)
Examples:
"What is your name?" he asked me. He asked me what my name is.
The policeman said to the boy, "Where do you live?" The policeman asked
the boy where he lived.
Peter said to John, "Why are you so late?” Peter asked John why he was
so late.
She said, “What helped him two hours ago?” She asked what had helped
him before two hours.
Bryan said to me, “Who doesn’t know you?” Bryan asked me who didn’t

                  (Unit 6) Home Assignment
1.Read the passage well, then answer the questions below
Three young men were playing with a gun on a street in a quiet area of
the town after dark when one of them fired it by mistake without aiming it
at anything. The bullet broke a window in an old lady’s house.
The young men made off at once when they saw the damage they had done,
but the old lady looked out of a window when she heard the explosion, and
she recognized one of them as the son of a man and woman who lived not far
from her.
The old lady complained to the police, and a detective came to her house.
The old lady gave him a detailed account of everything that had happened,
and then the detective asked her if she knew where the young man lived.
The old lady told him that too, so the detective went to the young man’s
house. He and his companions tried to hide, but the detective found them
and the gun and took them to the police station.
There his chief officer questioned the young men to find out which of them
owned the gun, but none of them was willing to say. The young man who
owned the gun did not dare to admit that he did because he did not have a
license for it.
At last the chief officer decided to put an end to the conversation, so he
turned to the detective and demanded to know whether he had got an
officer’s permission to take the gun away from the young man who owned it.
The detective felt anxious when he heard this question. “No, sir,” he
answered nervously, “I didn’t get it.
“In that case,” the officer declared angrily, “you were quite wrong to take it
away from him. You’d better return it immediately, or there’ll be a trouble!”
This made the young men smiled happily at each other, and as soon as the
detective held the gun out and said, “Here you are,” one of them put his hand
out in order to get it back.
That is how the officer finally discovered whom the gun belonged to.
                                                                             58

            Lesson 3 Grammar (Past Continuous)
                     Class Book P. 95
Last night, the family was having dinner when the lights suddenly went out.
Mom was serving soup, Dad was talking about his day at work, and the kids
were laughing at a funny story. Everyone stopped what they were doing and
sat quietly in the dark for a moment. While Dad was looking for a flashlight,
the kids were whispering spooky stories to each other. Eventually, the lights
came back on, and everyone was laughing at how dramatic it felt.
The past continuous tense describes actions or events that were happening
at a specific time in the past. These actions were ongoing and not completed
at that moment.

Alfred Nobel was a Swedish chemist who lived from 1833 to 1896. Alfred
and his brother made explosives, but in 1864 there was an accident in the
laboratory and Alfred's brother was killed. Alfred then decided to spend his
life trying to make explosives safer to use. One of the strongest explosives

could find a way to make it safer, but the Swedish government wouldn't let
him make any more explosives in his laboratory. It was too dangerous.
Nobel had the idea of taking nitroglycerine out on a boat in the middle of a

day, when he opened the large clay box, he found that the nitroglycerine was
coming out of one of the small boxes. To his surprise, the large clay box was
still dry. This gave him the idea of mixing clay with nitroglycerine. The clay
would take the oil out of nitroglycerine and make it safer. He called this new
explosive "dynamite".
Dynamite was very useful. Alfred Nobel made and sold so much of it that he
became a wealthy man. In his will, he gave a lot of his money to the "Swedish
prizes to people who did excellent work. The Academy called them "Nobel
Prizes". The winners get a lot of money. Nobel wanted one of the prizes to

Most of Jane’s animals were quite small: rabbits, mice, birds – that sort of
thing. But one day, something quite big came her way.
Jane’s mother noticed that she was spending quite a lot of time in the shed.
She also noticed that food was disappearing from the house – especially
bread and fruit. One evening, she decided to go down to the shed to see
herself.
As she stood outside the door of the shed, she could hear Jane talking to
someone inside. “She’s got a friend in there with her,” she thought. She
opened the door and looked in. At first, she could only see Jane sitting on
the ground. Then she made out the shape of an animal sitting beside Jane.
Two huge eyes stared up at her. She nearly screamed. It was a gorilla!
“Jane! Where on Earth……?” She started to say. But then she remembered.
A few days before, a young gorilla escaped from the zoo, and in spite of
every effort to find it, the animal simply vanished. “I found it wondering

                     Unit 9 Model Exam
1.Read the passage well, then answer the questions below:
The Nile River is one of the most famous rivers in the world, winding through
northeastern Africa. It is the longest river on the planet, stretching over
6,650 kilometers. The river has two main tributaries: the White Nile,
originating from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile, starting from Lake Tana in
Ethiopia. These two rivers meet in Sudan and then flow northward through
Egypt, finally emptying into the Mediterranean Sea.The Nile River has been the
lifeline of civilization in Egypt for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians
depended on the river for drinking water, agriculture, and transportation. The
fertile soil along the Nile's banks allowed them to grow crops like wheat,
barley, and flax. They also built an intricate system of irrigation to control the
flow of water and ensure their fields remained fertile.
The Nile's annual flooding was crucial to the success of Egyptian agriculture.
Each year, the river would overflow its banks, depositing nutrient-rich silt onto
the land. This silt made the soil extremely fertile, allowing the Egyptians to
produce abundant harvests. The ancient Egyptians even developed a calendar
based on the flooding cycle of the Nile.
Today, the Nile continues to be a vital resource for millions of people living in
the countries it passes through. Modern dams and irrigation projects help
control the river's flow and provide water for agriculture and hydroelectric
power. The Aswan High Dam, completed in 1970, is one of the most significant
engineering feats on the Nile. It controls flooding, generates electricity, and
provides water for irrigation .The Nile River remains a symbol of life and
prosperity in Egypt and beyond. Its waters continue to sustain agriculture,
support transportation, and inspire awe in all who encounter it.

    Story
Robinson Crusoe
                  134
Date: ----------------------
                   Character Analysis
1-Robinson Crusoe
-Role: Protagonist and narrator
-Character Traits:
-Resourceful and Practical: Crusoe demonstrates remarkable ingenuity and
survival skills. He builds a shelter, grows crops, domesticates animals, and crafts
tools, adapting to his environment over 28 years on the island
-Independent and Determined: Crusoe's decision to pursue a life of adventure
against his family's wishes highlights his self-reliance. This independence grows
as he learns to live in isolation.
-Spiritual Development: Over the course of the novel, Crusoe undergoes a
spiritual awakening. Initially dismissive of religion, he turns to God for guidance
and finds comfort in his faith, which becomes central to his survival.
-Contradictions: Crusoe embodies both the Enlightenment ideal of rationalism
and a deep reliance on divine providence, blending pragmatism with spirituality.
2-Friday
-Role: Crusoe’s companion and servant
-Character Traits:
-Loyal and Trusting: Friday becomes a devoted companion to Crusoe after
being saved from cannibals. His loyalty and obedience reflect his gratitude and
trust in Crusoe.
-Adaptable and Quick Learner: Despite cultural and language barriers, Friday
quickly adapts to Crusoe’s teachings, learning English and embracing Christianity.
-Representation of "The Noble Savage": Defoe presents Friday as an idealized
depiction of an indigenous person—kind, intelligent, and eager to adopt European
customs. This portrayal reflects the Eurocentric biases of the era.
-Limited Agency: Friday’s character is largely shaped by his relationship with
Crusoe. His role as a subordinate highlights the power imbalance and colonial
undertones of the novel.
                                                                            135

3-Crusoe’s Father
-Role: Crusoe’s guiding moral voice
-Character Traits:
-Cautious and Conservative: Crusoe’s father advocates for a stable, middle-
class life, warning Crusoe against the dangers of ambition and -adventure.
-Foreshadowing Figure: His advice acts as a moral benchmark that Crusoe
reflects upon throughout the story, particularly during moments of regret and
hardship.
5-The Cannibals
-Role: Antagonistic presence (though not inherently evil)
-Character Traits:
-Symbolic of the "Other": The cannibals are portrayed as a cultural contrast
to Crusoe’s European worldview, representing fear of the unknown.
-Moral Complexity: Crusoe grapples with his judgment of their practices,
recognizing that their actions are not inherently evil but part of their culture.
This challenges his moral perspective.
                                                                           136
