while they were walking home on a cold winter night, with the full moon shining bright, they
saw a strange well-dressed rider on a white horse, carrying what looked like a dead body. After
that, they followed the rider to the cemetery, where they heard weird voices and strange
sounds that scared them. In the end, they went back home, and Leo could not sleep that
night, worried that the rider would come back. The next morning, they found out that a
neighbour named Don Rómulo had suddenly died that same night, which made them think
that the ghost they saw was connected to his death.
Don Soilo
The story is about Don Soilo, a lonely man who lives in his small home called "El Puesto," in La
Mendieta. He lives with his daughter, who studies in the capital city, so she only visits him on
weekends. Don Soilo often goes to the "Almacén de Ramos Generales," where a man named
Ignacio is in charge. One day, after his daughter Natalia graduated as a primary school
teacher, Don Soilo decided to have a party and invite all his family and Ignacio. While having
drinks with Ignacio, Don Soilo told him that he had been a lonely man because the only
person he had trusted, his brother, had betrayed him. The betrayal had come when his
brother and his wife had planned to escape together by train, taking his young daughter with
them. Fortunately, Don Soilo had managed to rescue his daughter just in time and had chosen
to bring her up on his own. After sharing this, Don Soilo told Ignacio that he was the only
person who knew his secret because he believed Ignacio would be his only true friend.
A love affair
The story A Love Affair is about Don Carlos, a taxi driver from San Salvador de Jujuy who has a
wife and a daughter. He usually works the night shift, and he knows all the secrets of the
night. Although his wife considers him a good husband, he has a hidden girlfriend with whom
he often meets in secret.
One day, during one of their usual encounters, Don Carlos began to hear strange noises near
the place where he was meeting his girlfriend. As he got closer, he noticed there was a
headless person. When he saw this, he took his girlfriend and drove away from the place in
his car. This scared him to death, so he went to the hospital and did not work for a long time.
During that time, he heard nothing about his love affair.
When he returned to work, he was approached by a detective who was in charge of
investigating his case. The detective told him that his girlfriend had been dead long before his
relationship with her began. After the detective said this, Don Carlos was left speechless, and
realizing he had been with a ghost all that time drove him insane. Sadly, after some time, he
died in the asylum on a spring night.
(Anita opinion)
Anita seems like a nice and friendly person, but her actions show something different. She is
not honest with her husband and chooses to have secret affairs. Even if she feels ashamed
later, her behaviour causes pain and problems for others.
La taba
La taba is an old game that is usually played in a large patio or an open area in the
countryside. The playing field is 8 meters long and 3 meters wide, divided into two parts by a
line at the second meter. The taba is usually the knee bone of a cow. The rules are that the
taba has one side called “luck” and another called “bad luck.” If it lands on the middle side, it
is called “renga.” In the game, there are usually players and bettors. Many times, the games
end in tragedy.
One day, the game featured Don Soilo and Ignacio, who were incredibly good players and
used to practice in the backyard of Ignacio’s house when they had a competition. At one
point, a tournament was organized in “El Puesto,” where Don Soilo lived, and after a long day
of playing, the police started to approach. Luckily, everyone managed to escape before the
officers arrived. Ignacio was the luckiest, as he even got more money than he thought he
would.
Juanito
This story is about Juanito, who lives in "Mina 9 de Octubre," near Palpalá. In his youth, he
usually has strange behaviors, like playing or sleeping in the eucalyptus trees during full
moon nights. At school, his classmates often watch him, hoping to find something unusual like
elf ears, a tail, or goat legs, because they believe he made a deal with the devil. In his
teenage years, he is a good soccer player and goes to the technical school. However, the
superstitions about Juanito do not change, and people still believe he has a deal with the devil
or is under some kind of enchantment. As he grows up, he works at the steel foundry, where
he earns a good salary and continues to be a good soccer player, especially a good
goalkeeper. He has the chance to join a professional team, but he prefers to stay in his town.
He is also a particularly good truco player, which makes the superstitions about him stronger,
since people say he has the devil’s luck.
One day, after receiving his pay from work, during a night of truco and betting, he left and
disappeared forever. Many people believed the devil came to collect his soul because their
deal had ended. Although no one ever knew why he disappeared, his story remains well
known among the locals.
