equipped production facilities and a highly qualified team of professionals, focuses on
designing and manufacturing various types of garments catering to global markets. SAPL
adopts rigorous quality check processes, contemporary production methods, and streamlined
supply chain procedures to achieve global standards and client requirements.
The organization is designed to meet the demands of foreign buyers in terms of timely

Aims and Objectives of the Internship
The main objective of this internship was to have the first-hand experience of the apparel
merchandising process in a professional, export-oriented garment manufacturing setup. Some
key objectives were:
To comprehend the function of the merchandising department as a link between buyer
specifications and production abilities.
To witness the complete process of order execution—from design development to delivery.
To practice theoretical knowledge acquired through academic classes in real-world industry
practices.
Acquiring knowledge of the workflow, obstacles, and primary roles in a merchandising team.
Organizational Hierarchy and Departmental Structure
SAPL Industries is organized through a clearly defined hierarchy that ensures efficiency and
accountability. The Managing Director heads the organization, followed by department heads
who manage the major functions of Production, Merchandising, Quality Control, Finance,
Human Resources, and Logistics.
The Merchandising Department is a key unit, acting as the communication bridge between
buyers and internal departments. The department consists of a Merchandising Manager,
Senior Merchandisers, Assistant Merchandisers, and Trainees, who all contribute to various
stages of order processing and buyer coordination.
Operational and Support Departments
Operations of the company are being supported by a number of departments functioning in
coordination:
Production Department: Conducts fabric cutting, stitching, finishing, and packing. Ensures
timely performance and quality.
Design & Development Department:
Quality Assurance Department: provides for product quality through inspections at different
production stages.
Sampling Unit: Prepares samples according to buyer specifications for approval prior to bulk
production.
Logistics Department: Coordinates shipping and documentation for timely delivery of
products.
Finance & Accounts: Takes care of costing, invoicing, and budgeting.
Human Resources: Undertakes recruitment, training, and employee welfare.
Every department has a significant role in fulfilling customer expectations and enabling the
merchandising function.
Merchandising Practices, Product Details, and Quality
Systems
Some of the major merchandising practices I witnessed during the internship include:
Buyer Communication: Merchandisers practice continuous communication with buyers about
design specifications, price, delivery date, and order status.
Product Development: The unit collaborates with the sampling unit to develop samples and
obtain approval from buyers.
Costing and Order Negotiation: Careful cost analysis and negotiation are carried out for
executing orders profitably.
Production Coordination: The merchandisers coordinate with production groups to plan for
sourcing materials, trims, and accessories accordingly.
Quality Assurance: SAPL follows strict quality control protocols, including inline and final
inspections to meet international standards.
The company primarily produces woven garments, with a focus on women's, men's, and
kid's, wear for markets in USA, UK, Europe, Middle East and Asian markets.
Key Observations and Learnings
Throughout the internship, I gained valuable insights into the dynamic nature of the apparel
industry and the pivotal role of the merchandising department. Key takeaways include:
Role of effective communication and follow-up in facilitating the process of smooth
execution of orders.
Use of time and action calendars for the production scheduling.
Role of understanding the customer expectations, market trends, and the requirements of
flexibility and adaptability.
Experience with real-time problem-solving situations related to material hold-ups or quality

Utilization of theoretical coursework knowledge in courses such as product costing, supply
chain management, and apparel marketing.
This one-month internship at SAPL Industries Pvt. Ltd. was a very enriching experience as it
enabled me to witness and engage in actual merchandising operations. It offered a platform to
realize the intricacies and quick pace of the garment export sector and develop practical
capabilities and professional discipline.
The experience deepened my understanding of apparel merchandising and enhanced my
ability to relate academic learning to industry practices. I am confident that the knowledge
and exposure gained during this period will be instrumental in shaping my future career in the
apparel and fashion industry.
