negative effect on young people’s reading and writing skills. To what extend do you agree or disagree?
It is presumed by a multitude of individuals that by virtue of the widespread use of cutting
devices such as computers and smartphones for communication, youngsters’ reading and
writing skills are detrimentally affected. From my perspective, I wholeheartedly advocate this
statement.
To commence with, there are many compelling justifications to elucidate why this phenomenon
has adverse effects on juveniles. One prominent consequence of this trend is the decline of
traditional reading habits among them. To be specific, with the excessive exposure to social
media when utilizing high-tech gadgets, individuals who are considered young might often have
the inclination of reading short and informal texts, which are the substitute of books and
newspapers. As a result, this gives rise to a decreasing number of individuals reading books
and other formal materials. Moreover, the greater immense use of modern devices can impede
the resilience and patience of youngsters. Due to having the habit of reading brief news, they
may find it arduous to pay heed to long stories such as novels and make sustained reading,
which plays a pivotal part in fostering healthy reading habits. Hence, they can be prone to hardly
concentrate on accomplishing assignments at school, especially which need allocating an
enormous amount of time to scrutinize.
Regarding its harmful effect on reading skills, writing skills might also be negatively influenced. It
is unquestionable that this phenomenon renders informal writing styles. To make it clear, when
communicating with others on online platforms, the youth have the tendency to utilize
abbreviations and emojis in order to express their feelings and articulate thoughts to their
opponents, which defers them from ameliorating formal writing styles. As a result, they could
have difficulties in writing crucial documents and perhaps sometimes misspell words. One
indispensable shortcoming noticed is that this trend can also cause reliance on autocorrect and
other digital assistance, which will attenuate their writing process. Thus, there will be a lack of
paying attention to errors and tackling those issues of youngsters.
In conclusion, on account of aforementioned reasons, I concur with the statement that the wider
use of cutting-edge gadgets has detrimental effects on reading and writing skills of juveniles.
