The World Wide Web (WWW), often simply called the web, is one of the most transformative inventions
of the modern era. Introduced in 1989 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the web was designed as a way to share
and access information across computers using the internet. Today, it serves as the backbone of global

What is the Web?

The web is not the same as the internet. The internet is the global network of computers, while the web
is a service that runs on top of the internet. It uses a system of hyperlinks and web pages, which are
stored on servers and accessed by browsers like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.

The foundation of the web relies on three key technologies:

HTML (HyperText Markup Language): The language used to structure content on web pages.

HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol): The set of rules that allows communication between browsers and
servers.

URLs (Uniform Resource Locators): The addresses that identify and locate resources on the web.

Evolution of the Web

1. Web 1.0 (Static Web): In the 1990s, web pages were mostly read-only, with limited interaction.
2. Web 2.0 (Social Web): Beginning in the early 2000s, the web became interactive. Users could share,

3. Web 3.0 (Semantic & Decentralized Web): Emerging now, this phase emphasizes artificial intelligence,
blockchain, and decentralized applications, aiming for more personalized, secure, and user-controlled
experiences.
