CASE STUDY - FORCED MIGRATION IN SYRIA

In Syria, there were protests in 2011 because some teenagers got in trouble for
painting on a school wall. The protests got worse when people wanted the
President to quit. The government tried to stop the protests with force, but that
just made things more violent. Then, in 2012, a big war started in Syria. Rebel
groups fought against the government and things got even worse when a group
called Islamic State joined the war. They did really bad things like hurting people
who didn't follow their rules and killing other groups of fighters and religious
minorities. In 2013, they even used chemicals to attack a city called Damascus and
many people died. Because of all this fighting and danger, lots of people had to
leave Syria. The schools, hospitals, water systems, electricity plants, places to
worship, and money-making things were all getting destroyed. This made the
people who lived there very scared and not safe.
4

In Syria, there is a big problem. Many people have had to leave their homes
because of the fighting. It's sad because in just one year, 1.2 million people had to
go away from their houses. The United Nations did a report and they said that in
2016, 6.5 million people had to leave their homes inside Syria. That's a lot of
people! The UN wants to help all these people, but they need $3.26 to do it.
There are 6 million children who need help too. It's not just about money though.
Many people don't have clean water to drink or enough food to eat. And guess
what? More than 2 million kids can't even go to school. That's not fair!
It's hard for helpers to reach the people who need it most. Some groups
won't let them help. Can you believe that? There are almost 400,000 people in 15
places who can't get the help they need to stay alive. That's scary. It's like they're
all alone and no one can help them. It's not right.
5

We need to do something to help these people. They are just like us, but
they are going through a tough time. We can donate money to the United Nations
so they can help more people. We can also spread the word and tell other people
about what's happening in Syria. Maybe if more people know, they will want to
help too. We can make a difference if we all work together. Let's show these
people that they are not alone and that we care about them.

PUSH AND PULL FACTORS?

People think very carefully before making the decision to migrate. The decision is
likely to be a combination of:
8

PUSH FACTORS - Negative things about the place where you are which make you
want to leave. These might include low pay, lack of job opportunities, war and
conflict, environmental problems and other factors.

PULL FACTORS - Positives things about the place you decide to move to. These
might just be perceived positives (ie they might not actually exist when you
arrive). They might include opportunities in education and employment, better
housing and infrastructure, social factors.

1. Which of the following is an example of a push factor?
a. Access to better education
b. Environmental problems
c. Improved housing opportunities
d. Enhanced social factors

2. Why do people carefully consider push and pull factors before making a migration decision?
a. To ensure that push factors are stronger than pull factors.
b. To make a decision solely based on push factors.
c. To weigh the negative and positive aspects of their current location against potential
benefits in a new place.
d. To minimize the influence of environmental problems on their decision-making
process.

HOW HAS POPULATION CHANGED OVER TIME AND HOW CAN IT BE

MEASURED?

Due to factors such as migration, populations are fluid and changing. In order to
understand this change we need to measure key elements of population, and by
looking at patterns we should then be able to make predictions.

Global population levels, having grown slowly for the majority of human history,
are now rising at a rapid rate. The total world population of world is 7.888 billion
(2021).

Population change is dependent on births, deaths and migration. Births and

deaths are natural causes of population change and the difference between the
10

rates of both is called the natural increase (see information box). The rate of
natural increase is given as a percentage, calculated by dividing the natural
increase (given per 1,000 population) by 10.

ACTIVITY: THINK AND DISCUSS

1. Why are population pyramids important for understanding populations?

2. What are some examples of changes in population that you have observed in
your own life or community? How do these changes impact society?

POPULATION PYRAMIDS
Population pyramids are graphs that show the age and sex distribution of a
country's population. They help us understand how a country's population has
changed over time because of things like the economy, politics, and natural
events. By looking at population pyramids, we can see the different shapes and
growth rates of populations in different countries. Population pyramids are used
by demographers, who study populations, to understand the makeup of a
population and how it might change in the future.
Population pyramids can also be used to study the past and plan for the future. By
looking at population pyramids, we can see if a population is young, middle-aged,
or old. We can also learn about the challenges and opportunities that come with
different population structures. For example, a population with a large number of
young people might have different needs and opportunities than a population
with a large number of older people. By studying population pyramids, we can
gain a better understanding of how populations change and what that means for
society.

CAN POPULATION CHANGE BE MANAGED?

Population change is the

increase or decrease in
the number of people in a
place. It is important to
manage population
change because it can
affect many things like the
environment, poverty,
and political stability.
Some countries have tried
to control population
growth by using policies like the "one-child policy" in China. Other countries are
now trying to increase their population because they are worried about having
too few people in the future.
There are different ways to manage population change. One way is to increase or
decrease the overall population growth rate. This can be done by giving tax
breaks and subsidies to families with children or by encouraging immigration.
Another way is to make sure that different groups of people have the same
average rate of population growth. For example, all social classes within a society
should have a similar population growth rate. Some countries have also tried to
increase or decrease the population growth of specific groups of people, like
those with special abilities or disabilities.
Managing population change is important because it can affect the world in many
ways. The world's population is growing very fast, and this can put a lot of
pressure on resources like water and land. It can also make it harder for
endangered plants and animals to survive. That's why it's important for countries
to come up with solutions to manage population change, like promoting gender
equity and sustainable consumption. By working together, we can create a
sustainable world where people and nature can thrive.
