BASICS 4.3:-IMPORTANCE OF DRAWING SELECTION OF SCALES
SELECTION OF SCALES
• Selection of scale depends on the degree of accuracy
required of scaled distance in preparing drawings.
• Largest scale conveniently possible shall be adopted
• All important dimensions should be explicitly indicated on
SCALES
the drawing so that the work may be executed without
(Covered in previous lectures)
resorting to scaling measurements from the drawings
• As a rule scaling for determining dimensions should be
discouraged

SELECTION OF SCALES OF DRAWING SELECTION OF SCALES
Cont… SELECTION OF SCALES (Revision)
• Typical methods of expressing numerical scales on drawing Question:
are as follows Building Block is 5m x 10m.
1cm = 10 meters (or 1000cm) 1:1000 Select a suitable scale for drawing on A4 Sheet
1cm = 2.5 km (or 2,50,000cm) 1:250000
1) For working drawing plans, Elevations, Sections: For 5m on 200mm side of A4 sheet = 1:25
1cm = 2m (1:200) , 1cm = 1m (1:100), 1cm= 0.5m (1:50) For 10m on 300mm side of A4 sheet = 1:33.33
2) For large scale drawings – general drawings: Select the smaller scale = 1:33
1cm = 20cm (1:20), 1cm = 10cm (1:10) Select further smaller scale for incorporation margins
3 Enlarged details: Final Scale = 1:40 or 1:50
1cm =10cm (1:10), 1cm =5cm (1:5), 1cm = 2cm (1:2),
1cm =1cm or full size (1:1) 5 6
