What is Green Building ?
A green building is one that uses less water, optimizes
energy efficiency, conserves natural resources,
generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for
occupants, as compared to a conventional building.
.
It is a practice of creating structures and using the processes that
are environmentally responsible and resource efficient throughout
a building’s life cycle from sitting to design, construction,
operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction.
4
Why Green Building ?
Green Buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact
on human health and the natural environment by the
following ways:
By reducing waste,
Using energy, water
pollution and
and other resources
environmental
efficiently.
degradation.
5
How is it different from other
buildings?
Parameters Normal Building Green Building
Energy Consumption High Low
Indoor Environment Quality Good Very Good
Emissions High Low
Waste Management Less Efficient Highly Efficient
Building Materials Non Eco friendly Eco friendly
6
Fundamental Principles of
Green Building practice.
1. Structure Efficiency
• Saves cost
• Improves performance
• Minimizes Impact on environment
2. Energy Efficiency
• Natural lighting in the structure.
• Natural airflow by planting trees in and around
structures.
7
3. Water Efficiency
• Reduce wastage
• Reuse water
4. Materials Efficiency
• Materials can be recycled
• Should generate surplus amount of energy.
Ex. Solar Power Panels
5. Waste and Toxic Reduction
• Reuse resources. Byproduct Raw material
8
How to
construct a
Green Building ?
Cool Roof
• Reflects Sunlight and releases absorbed heat.
• Decreases roof temperature.
• Reduces air conditioning needs.
• 10-15% energy savings.
• Materials: special reflective paints, cool roof tiles,
vegetation.
9
Denim Recycled Paper Cork Icynene
10
Green Insulation
• Reduces thermal energy transmission through ceilings, floors, and walls.
• Improves indoor air quality and reduces energy costs.
• Recycling of materials.
• Materials: Cotton (Denim), Recycled paper, cork, Icynene (Foam of
Castor oil).
Compressed Soil Mud Blocks (CSMB)
High-quality building materials made from compressing the right mix of soil with
6-9% cement.

12
Electrochromic smart glass
They react accordingly to the outside environment and
automatically tinting itself to reduce glare, decrease energy output,
and improve occupant comfortability.
13
Net Zero Homes
A net-zero home GENERATES as much
energy as it uses, so the net amount of
energy it purchases from external sources
is zero.
In 2014, New Delhi inaugurated the first
zero energy building of India, named
the INDIRA PARYAVARAN BHAWAN,
which hosts offices of Ministry of
Environment and Forest

How to follow Green Building Practices
at home?
Install more energy efficient appliances.
Replace worn-out materials with more sustainable
alternatives.
Use low-flow water devices.
Install a rainwater harvesting system.
Use LED lights.
22
Disadvantages of
Green Building
1. Initial high cost
2. Technology problems
3. Maintenance issue
4. Skilled workers required
5. Not suitable for all locations
6. Energy supply depends upon weather
conditions
