LITERATURE

 Some loosely interpret literature as any printed matter written in a book, a

magazine, or a pamphlet. This includes novels, news, or any articles posted in
a certain platform.
 Literature is a faithful reproduction of man’s manifold experiences blended
into a harmonious expression. We can find different human experiences in
certain literary works, and these experiences can provide us with important life
lessons.
 Because literature deals with the ideas, thoughts, and emotions of man,
literature can be said to be the story of man. Man’s love, griefs thoughts,
dreams, and aspirations are coached in beautiful language literature. One
great novel in the title of “A Thousand Splendid Suns” written by Khaled Hosseini
is one of the many manifestations that literature is a great story-teller
 This novel gives us a portrait of the decisions we had to make and asked
readers if they would give up what they love for the people they love. This is
an excellent novel about all the aspects of life that color our world.
 Literature provides knowledge on the story of a nation’s spirit. Literature not only
tells stories but also serves as a platform for propaganda that can
play an important role in nation-building.
 Literature expresses the feelings of people to the society, to the government, to
his surroundings, to his fellowmen, and to his Divine Creator. The expression of
one’s feelings may be through love, sorrow, happiness, hatred, anger, pity,
contempt, or revenge.
 True literature is a piece of written work which is undying. It expresses the
feelings and emotions of people in response to his everyday efforts to live, to be
happy in his environment, and after struggles, to reach his Creator.
 True literature presents man’s dreams, aspirations, joys, sorrows, triumphs, and
failures. “Life illumines literature and literature illumines life”- Life provides
literature materials but it is literature that gives meaning to life.
 IMPORTANCE OF LITERATURE
 By studying good literature, we learn more about human problems and
difficulties. Literature allows individuals to explore human nature including
problems and difficulties. It gives us multiple perspectives and different views
in confronting life’s iniquities. Good literature could be a good source of values
that will prepare us in handling situations that we don’t normally encounter.

 We will know about the universality of such problems and ways to

overcome them. By simply reading literature, people can have a universal
understanding of such problems and generate unified and diverse solutions. It
was said that way because the majority of good literature capitalizes on practical
solutions rather than theoretical answers.
 It makes us better human beings. Literature is a good source of contemplative
stories that can serve as avenues for men to reflect upon their actions and
decisions in life. Literature makes people familiarize themselves with endearing
values such as respect, integrity, compassion, loyalty, understanding, and
responsibility. These values will help man live a life that is worth living.

 International understanding and world peace. Although the world is a very

complex place to live in, there is a common ground where people meet as a
race- human emotion. Through this, the world can listen to various stories and
diversify knowledge that can, later on, provide commonality in enriching likeness
in harboring world peace and inclusivity.

 It allows us to go places we’ve never been, meet persons we’ve never met,
encounter ideas that never crossed our minds. Literature is never one until
shared- a factor that sums what it is as an aspect of life. Stories can change and
bring about life and propel humans to do more, see more, make more, and think
more. It then allows humans a passage in the gateway of human’s granary of life.

SEVEN LITERARY STANDRADS

1. Universality describes a piece of writing that appeals to the hearts and minds of
almost any reader. The appeal is considered universal due to its ability to cross-
gender, racial and cultural barriers, regardless of the time, it’s written. ANYONE
CAN RELATE
EX; ROMEO AND JULIET
2. Artistry describes literature that is aesthetically appealing and reveals or conveys
hidden truth and beauty. This type of literature appeals to broad audiences and
possesses a sense of beauty in the writing that could even feel poetic. This can be seen
in the works of James Joyce. She experiments with structure, dialogue, and
characterization.
3. Permanence is determined by a written work’s ability to stand the test of time, which
makes it impossible to determine at the moment of writing. Novels that continue to be
read over and over again across decades, either for enjoyment or for fresh insights and
ideas, meet this criterion. Many novels enjoy initial popularity but ultimately fade into
obscurity with time, failing the permanence test. Readers today still like
classical literature like Romeo and Juliet, after it was originally written for several
generations, and in a completely different world. This is very important because if a literary
work is not appreciated 20 years after publication, it will be forgotten.; TALK ABOUT
TIMELINESS-OCCURING AT PARTICULAR TIME; TIMELESSNESS-REMAINING
INVARIABLE THROUGHOUT THE TIME
4. Style refers to the distinct way the author expresses his or her thoughts. Words can be
used in unique, creative, and entertaining ways that make the work memorable.
Style is another element that is subject to interpretation by readers in terms of its appeal.
“Thank you very much” is the most common way of expressing gratitude to someone or
event. But, style tells us that there are a lot of ways in which we can express gratitude
such as: a. Thank you for everything; b. I’m so thankful for everything you bring to the
table; c. Thank a million; d. I truly appreciate you, and many more
5. Intellectual value takes readers into a bit of a gray area as they may have different
opinions about what qualifies as intellectual, but from an academic point of view,
intellectual works are relevant to society and thought-provoking. Literature with
intellectual value promotes critical thinking that enhances both abstract and reason-
based thought processes and makes readers focus on the fundamental truths of life and
nature. One best example for this book “Business Ventrues” written by John Brooks.
This books opens up about human nature in the context of business and technologies. It
contains 12 case studies that will trigger your mind and curiosity.
STIMULATESCRITICAL THINKING THAT ENRICHES MENTAL PROCESS OF
ABSTRACT REASONING AND MAKING MAN REALIZE THE FUNDAMENTAL OF
TRUTHS OF LIFE AND ITS NATURE
6. Literature with spiritual value lifts the inner spirit and soul and has the power to
motivate and inspire readers. It typically draws on the suggested lessons and
moral codes of society that are depicted in various literary genres.
7. Suggestiveness of literature relies on emotional power to convey nuances,
symbolism, implied meanings, imagery and messages. The power
of suggestion allows the work to inspire and provoke thoughts and understanding
beyond the actual words written on the page. This literary standard accentuates stories
that would talk about love, success, failures and many more. IT UNRAVELS MANS’
EMOTIONAL POWER

GENERALIZATION:
In this week, you learned that the word literature is derived from the Latin term "litera"
which means letter. It has been defined differently by various writers. Some defined it as
any printed matter written a book, a magazine, or a pamphlet. Literature is also an
important asset as it brings significance in any aspect of life. May it be in the area of
education, business, politics and personal undertakings. In writing a literature, it is
important to take note of the different literary standards to produce a work that can be
considered literary. These are the following; artistry, suggestiveness, intellectual value,
spiritual value, permanence, universality, and style. Literature is a reflection of
human nature and a way of knowing oneself. In this time of pandemic, stories from
books can speak a lot.
