Golf's modern origins are in 15th-century Scotland, where the game evolved

from earlier stick-and-ball pastimes into a formalized sport. The game was
officially banned in 1457 due to its interference with archery practice, but a
royal endorsement by King James IV in the early 16th century helped its
widespread popularity, eventually leading to the establishment of the first rules
and 18-hole course in the 18th century. Key milestones include Mary, Queen
of Scots' introduction of the game to France, the founding of the first official
golf society in Edinburgh in 1744, and the first 18-hole course at St. Andrews
in 1764.

Early Origins and Development

 15th Century Scotland:
The game that became golf was played on the eastern coast of Scotland, with players
using sticks to hit pebbles around natural terrain towards a target hole.
 The Ban:
In 1457, King James II of Scotland banned golf because it distracted men from their
military training and archery practice.
 Royal Acceptance:
The ban was lifted when King James IV of Scotland, an avid golfer, became the first
royal patron of the game.
From Scotland to the World
 European Expansion:
The royal endorsement in the 16th century helped spread the game throughout
Europe.
 Mary, Queen of Scots:
She introduced golf to France, and the term "caddy" is believed to have come from her
French military aides, known as cadets.
Modernization of the Game
 18th Century Rules and Courses:
The game began to resemble its modern form in the 1700s.
 The first established golf rules were created in 1744.
 The first 18-hole golf course was constructed at St. Andrews in 1764, which became
the site of the world's oldest golf tournament, The Open Championship, first played in
1860.
 Professionalism and Equipment:
 The 1890s saw a rapid growth in golf clubs.
 In 1920, the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) was established, which helped
grow the sport professionally.
 Innovations in club and ball technology, such as the development of the dimpled
rubber ball and metal shafts for clubs, continued to evolve.
