10 Writing an advice letter - handout Name ______________
Activity 1: Read the advice letter and evaluate it according to the chart!
Student’s challenge:
Dear Matt,
High school is so challenging! There are so many subjects to learn. I have no free time at
school, and every day I am busy taking classes and finishing homework. Even during the
weekends, I hardly go out to play because I have to finish tons of homework on both Saturday and
Sunday. Sometimes I feel like my life is meaningless. What should I do?

Advice letter:
Dear Yu Zong,
In your letter, you mentioned that you feel your life is meaningless. You are busy both at
school and at home, there are so many subjects to study in high school.
First, I believe you can make changes to your schedule. You can wake up early one day to
study more, allow yourself some free time in the following day. For example, on each week end,
you can finish all of your homework before the end of Saturday. In your weekdays, you can do
similar things like giving your self a break on Tuesdays and Thursdays, spent more time to study
on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
Also, if you always feel tired and anxious, why not try to relax yourself? You can play sports
with your classmates, listen to music, read books that you are interesting in, or take a nap during
the noon break. On weekends, you hang out with your friends to parks, cinemas, and museums.
Matt
Also: pay attention to grammar and spelling! (Use a red pen to mark mistakes!)
