We all have a favorite superhero.
Someone who does
impossible things, has incredible strength, can move
blazingly fast, or is able to survive anything. From
Superman to Spiderman, and from Thor to the Hulk, the
world of fiction and comics has given us many heroes to
look up to. But have you wondered how these
superheroes are so powerful? Is it even possible to
explain their powers in a scientific manner, or do you
need to forget about the basic laws of physics when it
comes to these caped crusaders?
Comic fans, and even acclaimed scientists have tried to
find a plausible scientific reason behind the powers of
these fictional creatures. Let’s take a look at what they
came up with –
1. Superman
You cannot talk about superheroes and not start with
Superman. He is one of the most powerful beings in the
Superhero world and has far too many powers. He can
fly, which can be possible if his skin emits high velocity
air which propels him. Another scientific theory is that
Superman can control a hypothetical substance known as
a negative mass. Negative mass can not only neutralize
large forces like gravity, it can also explain how he is so
strong.
Another intriguing power that Superman has is X-
ray vision. While the physics behind this power is
simple, the fact that X-rays are harmful for the human
body, mean that the standard scientific explanation does
not offer a way for Superman to use this power without
causing major radiation wherever he goes.
2. Iron Man
Tony Stark, the genius billionaire built an exo-suit that
lets him fly at supersonic speeds, survive bullets and
blasts, blow people up with hand lasers and so much
more. His powers seem the most scientific, since they are
all based on gadget that he has created. There is only one
problem with Iron Man. The power needed to power this
suite would require at least one whole nuclear reactor, if
not more. The comic solves this problem with an arc
reactor, which is a tiny power generating device that has
more than enough juice to fuel all the gadgets that Stark
can create.
But what can create such huge amounts of powers? We
already know from the comics and the movies that
nuclear energy is not the source of the arc reactor’s
powers. This huge amount of energy can be explained,
however, if you consider that the reactor combines
matter and antimatter. Even a milligram of matter and
anti-matter combining can level a town with its blast, so
maybe Mr Stark has perfected the technique to create a
store anti matter?
3. Batman
Before you go telling me that Batman has no
superpowers, ask yourself this, how does he survive so
much physical damage? Sure, he is highly motivated and
trained under the master assassin Ra’s al Ghul himself,
but he goes head to head with Superman himself and
emerges victorious every time? There has to be some
kind of way he can heal himself so many times! He may
be able to block the pain while he is fighting as he
learned during his stay in Nanda Parbat with the League
of Assassins. We are guessing that he also picked up
some obscure healing practices that allow his body to
heal faster. We all know that warriors’ clans also had
exemplary medical knowledge, in order to heal
themselves, so the highest assassin order in the world
would certainly have some super-secret Tibetan or
Oriental healing herbs and techniques. Science has still
not disproved these healing methods and is in fact, trying
to harness their power, so this scientific explanation is
certainly possible!
Superheroes and super
powers
Do you have a favorite superhero
(sometimes written super-hero or super
hero)? Maybe it is Batman, Spider-Man,
Superman, Wonder Woman, one of the X-
Men, or a lesser known superhero like the
Green Lantern or Thor.
Whoever your favorite superhero is he or she has a
few things in common with all the other
superheroes out there. They all abide by a strict
moral code*, they are willing to risk their lives to
help others, they don’t expect to be paid or
compensated for the work they do, and they have
super powers. Today I want to focus on talking
about the different types of super powers that are
common among superheroes. Below, I discuss
these super powers and what they allow
superheroes to do. Enjoy!
Super powers (extraordinary abilities):
flight – the ability to lift off the ground and fly
through the air
Soaring in the skies like a bird offers many
possibilities. This super power, like many others,
was popularized by Superman, who flies with a red
cape. If a person sees Superman in the sky it is
common the hear him or her might say “Is it a
bird…is it plane…it’s Superman!”
invisibility – the power to become unseen
Where would you go if you were invisible?
Superheroes like the Invisible Girl and The
Invisible Man and even the wizard Harry Potter,
use this power to follow and catch bad guys.
shape shifting – the ability to shift or change one’s
appearance into a different human or another
object altogether
The X-Men character Mystique has this power and
uses it to transform herself into anybody she wants.
This super power is also shared by Metamorpho,
whose name reveals his power. The word
metamorphosis in English is used to explain the
process of transformation from an immature form
to an adult form or in the case of superheroes from
one thing or person into a completely different one.
rapid healing – the ability to recover quickly from
serious injury
Superheroes old and new often have this power that
allows them to get hurt and then get better within
an instant. Wolverine of the X-Men is famous for
this, as is the massive green Hulk.
super speed – the ability to move faster than a
normal human
Super speed is a very common power among
superheroes. Superman is known for having this
power, but the Flash, may be known as the
superhero with the greatest speed of all.
super strength – enhanced muscles that allow a
character to hit harder, lift more, and generally
have more power than their enemy
Having super strength comes in handy in many
ways, like lifting a car out of the way or pushing a
building over. Lots of superheroes have super
strength, but the really strong ones include: the
Hulk, the Thing, and Thor.
telekinesis – the ability to manipulate objects with
one’s mind
This is a super power that might make us normal
people more lazy if we had it, as we would just sit
around and do all our work with our minds instead
of our bodies. But for superheroes like Jean Grey
of the X-Men or Jack-Jack (the baby from The
Incredibles) it gives them great power and
advantage over bad guys.
telepathy – the sharing of thoughts without using
language or other channels of communication
Many people think of telepathy as mental
communication or the ability to read other’s
thoughts. This is a common superhero power that
is shared by Captain Planet and Aquaman among
others.

* moral code = a sense of behavioral conduct that
differentiates decisions and actions between those
that are good (or right) and bad (or wrong)
