Stress

- is the body's natural response to any demand or challenge. It can be physical, emotional, or mental,
and is triggered by situations that require adaptation or change. While short-term (acute) stress can
be helpful in motivating action or focus, long-term (chronic) stress can negatively affect health,
leading to problems such as anxiety, fatigue, weakened immunity, or heart disease.

Physical Activity

- refers to any movement of the body that requires energy expenditure. This includes everyday
activities such as walking, cleaning, gardening, and structured exercises like running, dancing, or
sports. Regular physical activity improves overall health, supports mental well-being, reduces the
effects of stress, and helps prevent chronic diseases.
Physical activity can reduce stress in several scientifically supported ways.

1. Releases "Feel-Good" - there are chemicals that improve moods, and promote relaxation
2. Improves Sleep Quality - regular physical activity helps regulate your sleep patterns, leading to deeper,
more restful sleep better sleep improves your ability to handle stress and emotions effectively.
3. Provides a Mental Break - Physical activity can act as a distraction from stressful thoughts or situations.
Activities like walking, dancing, or sports give your mind something else to focus on.
4. Boosts Self-Esteem and Confidence- staying active can increase self-worth, helping you feel more in
control of your body and life.
5. Promotes Social Interaction – group exercises, team sports, or walking with a friend provide social support,
which is a powerful buffer against stress.

1. In your own words, explain how physical activity can help reduce stress. Which of the benefits
mentioned in the reading do you find most helpful, and why?
2. Which type of physical activity do you enjoy most (e.g., walking, dancing, playing sports)? How do you
think this activity helps your mental and emotional well-being?
3. How can doing physical activities with friends or classmates help reduce stress? Share an example of a
time when social interaction through physical activity made you feel better.
