Microsoft Word Exercise 1: Introduction to Word

In this exercise you will practice:

- Opening and closing Microsoft Word


- Using common keyboard keys
- Navigating the Ribbon (Home tab and various groups)
- Using Copy and Paste commands
- Changing font and font size
- Highlighting text with mouse or keyboard
- Making text Bold, Italic, and Underlined

Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Double-click the Microsoft Word 2010 icon on the desktop (a blue W).

2. Microsoft Word should open.

3. Type the following sentence: The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

4. Highlighting with mouse: Click and drag over the sentence from right to left; then release
the mouse. Click anywhere on the page to remove the highlight and practice again if needed.

5. Highlighting with keyboard: Click before the sentence, hold the Shift key, and press the
Right Arrow key until the whole sentence is highlighted.

6. On the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click Copy to copy the highlighted text.

7. Click after the sentence, press Enter to move the cursor down.

8. Click Paste (Home tab → Clipboard group) to paste the copied text.

9. Use Select → Select All (Home tab → Editing group) to highlight all text on the page.

10. Click Copy to copy everything.

11. Click below the text, then click Paste to add more.

12. Again, use Select All → Copy → Paste to repeat the copying and pasting process.

13. Change font for the 2nd sentence: Highlight the second sentence, then on the Home tab
→ Font group, change the font (e.g., to Biondi).

14. Change font size for the 3rd sentence: Highlight the third sentence, then change the font
size (e.g., to 24).

15. Bold the 4th sentence: Highlight it, then click the Bold button in the Font group.

16. Italicize the 5th sentence: Highlight it, then click the Italic button.
17. Underline the 6th sentence: Highlight it, then click the Underline button.

18. Delete text using Backspace: Place the cursor at the end of the 8th sentence and press
Backspace until it disappears.

19. Delete text using Delete key: Place the cursor at the beginning of the 7th sentence and
press Delete until it disappears.

20. Have your instructor check your work.

21. Close Word by clicking the X at the top right.

22. When prompted to save changes, click Don’t Save.
