The front of the car uses paper towels and springs to absorb the force of a crash. The paper towels compress on impact, slowing the car and reducing the force felt by the springs. The springs then gradually reverse the car's direction to minimize shock to the passenger compartment. A styrofoam seat and dashboard cushion an egg passenger. The egg is secured in the seat with rubber bands, Velcro, and a plastic bottle top. An integrated rollover system uses a plastic windshield and steel wires to right the car if it flips over, keeping the egg safely in place.

Car Report Front Bumper System The front crumple zone consists of a series of springs behind a cushioning wall

of paper towels. The paper towels absorb some of the shock and slow the car down significantly because of the air bubbles found between the towels. As the car crashes into a wall, the air is released quickly from the towels and the towels compress. In the process, the car quickly loses momentum, so that the next component, the springs, will not emit a significant bounce. The paper towels are attached to two straws that hold them in place. So if the paper towels fall off or become unusable, it is possible to quickly slide the paper off and slide on a fresh set of towels. The springs are designed to gradually reverse the cars direction so that the chassis itself experiences very little shock, and thus the passenger will remain intact. There are two main springs on the left and right that distribute the shock relatively evenly over both sides of the vehicle, so the vehicle will bounce back in a straight line, and thus not fall off the track. We have attempted to dampen the springs to reduce bounce as much as possible, as each bounce presents another opportunity for the egg to break. The springs are connected to the chassis through hot glue, and are stuck to Styrofoam. The entire crumple zone is around 3 inches long and 3 inches wide. Seat/ Restraint System The seat itself is made entirely of Styrofoam, to cushion the egg so it will refrain from breaking. We have designed a dashboard out of Styrofoam that has a hole on the back. When pushed, the dashboard will easily bend in, thus greatly reducing the probability of the egg getting crushed. This is also true for the seat bottom and back. Cotton has been glued to all sides of the seat to further cushion the egg. On the top of the seat is the top of a plastic bottle, also with cotton glued on to the back. The egg will fit between the seat bottom and the bottle top, and be effectively secured using a seat belt system made from a combination of rubber bands and Velcro. Hopefully, with these safety measures, the egg will NOT fly out of the car and smash. Windshield/ Integrated Rollover System The windshield is made completely of the remains of a plastic wrapping pack. It is hot glued to the frame made of metal rods that is also a part of the integrated rollover system. The windshield is 100% transparent. The steel wire rollover effectively makes the car turn right side up again should it fall upside down or on its side with significant force. Should rollover fail, the cap restraint system should keep the egg in place and hopefully intact.
