According to Cifra Club (2024) this is an article about alternative rock:
What is alternative rock?
Alternative rock is a subgenre formed by bands that do not fit into the mainstream. These
groups present some kind of novelty, recontextualizing the sound of bands from the past, or
being totally innovative.
Therefore, alternative rock encompasses several genres within rock, such as punk, new
wave, grunge, brit-pop and many others.
Characteristics
Both bands with an emphasis on guitar riffs and groups with a more experimental and/or
danceable sound can be considered alternative rock. For the most part, lyrics address topics
such as drug use, suicide, depression, boredom and escapism.
It is common for groups to perform in small venues and on the college circuit in their home
country. In the history of alternative rock, many bands signed with independent record
labels, put their records on college radio stations, and gained notoriety through word of
mouth.
Most of these bands shun mega-stardom. However, alternative bands such as R.E.M.,
Nirvana and Oasis achieved international success in the 1990s, propelling alternative rock
into the mainstream.
Emergence of the term "alternative rock".
Although the beginning of the history of alternative rock dates back to the 1960s, it was in
1979 that the word alternative came into more widespread use.
In that year, American journalist Terry Tolkin was writing about bands classified as
alternative music. The radio station KZEW broadcast a program called Rock and Roll
Alternative about new wave bands.
In the 1980s, alternative rock was called indie rock in England, due to the bands that
recorded on the various independent labels that emerged with punk. NME and Sounds
magazines created a music list called Alternative Charts.
On the other hand, in the United States, alternative rock was called college rock because of
the bands' connection to college radio stations.
Over time, the term alternative became more popular and replaced college rock and indie.
In 1991, Jane's Adiction vocalist Perry Farrell created the Lollapalooza festival, which he
said was to "bring together disparate elements of the alternative rock community."
Where does the history of alternative rock begin?
In 1964, what became known as the British Invasion happened. The Beatles, the Rolling
Stones and other English groups were making it big in the U.S. charts.
This meant that American rock, which had been disappearing from the music scene in the
late 50s and 60s, made a comeback. New groups such as The Byrds and The Mamas & The
Papas formed, with the British groups, the mainstream of the 1960s.
This scene developed into the psychedelic rock that exploded in 1967. Thus, the history of
alternative rock begins right in that context.
21st Century
With the turn of the century, bands like The Strokes and The Killers emerged reviving the
indie pop of the 1980s.
Although they achieved commercial success throughout the first decade of this century,
alternative rock no longer figures in the mainstream.
The last alternative group to achieve commercial success was Arctic Monkeys. Their album
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not became the best-selling debut album in
UK history.
Nowadays, we can mention as highlights of alternative rock the American duo Twenty One
Pilots and the Canadian singer Mac DeMarco.
