CHE 001 – Chemistry for Engineers (Lecture) – BS CE 107

Problem Set 1

Review of Basic Concepts in Chemistry

Instructions and Reminders:

1. Show your COMPLETE and comprehensive solution.
2. Include all relevant plots, graphs, derivation, concepts, etc. whenever possible.
3. Follow the PRESCRIBED FORMAT provided for the class. NO EXTRA SHEETS (fly leaf, front
page, back page, etc.) nor folders should be used. Just STAPLE YOUR PAPERS PROPERLY.
4. Write your solutions LEGIBLY on the prescribed paper for the class,
5. A RANDOM AUDIT of your answers will be conducted in class to prove if you understand your
solutions. Prepare and beware.

Write the corresponding balanced equation for each given chemical equation and write the sum of all
coefficients of every balanced equation (NOTE: No FRACTION or DECIMAL in the coefficients). [10 points
each]

2. ZnBr2 + C2H5MgBr → Zn(C2H5)2 + MgBr2
3. As4O6 + CaF2 → CaO + AsF3
4. HCl + CaO → CaCl2 + H2O
5. C6H12O6 + O2 → CO2 + H2O
6. ZnS + HNO3 → ZnSO4 + H2O + NO
7. TiO2 + Mg → MgO + Ti
8. NaAlO2 + HF → Na3AlF6 + H2O + Al2O3
9. GeCl4 + 4 NaOH → GeO2 + 2 H2O + NaCl
10. RMgX + S8 → RSH + R2S + MgS + MgX2
