BSCE 2-1 GROUP 2
GLOBAL DEMOGRAPHY-CONTEMPORARY WORLD
Objective:
Understand what global demography is, explore its challenges, and how global demography
(especially in the Philippines) can become more sustainable and inclusive using the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs).
Introduction—-
• For this segment, we are tackling about global demography.
• The importance of global demography.
Demography…
For much of human history, demographic patterns were reasonably stable; human populations
grew slowly, and the age structures, birth rates, and death rates of populations changed only
gradually. Epidemics and pandemics had huge effects on populations, but these effects were
short-lived and had little bearing on long-term trends.
Over the past 50 years, the developed world experienced a significant demographic upheaval,
with a 'baby boom' generation and a shift in population balance from young to old. The developing
world experienced a population explosion due to improved nutrition, public health infrastructure,
and medical care.
The rapid population growth, primarily due to high fertility, will continue to impact humanity for
some time, as the increasing number of childbearing ages creates 'population momentum,' with
most countries, especially developing ones, experiencing long-term growth.
Economic development is greatly impacted by changes in the population. While expanding life
expectancy encourages saving and education, the growing senior population may impede growth.
The size of the workforce is increased by baby booms and fertility falls, which may accelerate
economic growth. Baby boom-absorbing nations can grow quickly, but non-absorbing nations run
the risk of producing sizable, persistently underemployed, and unruly working-age populations
ROLEPLAY 1
• Unwrapping the whole discussion of a specific topic and its
importance.
(right after the bell rang, the teacher walked into the class–greeting his students)
Teacher: Good afternoon class! (sets his laptop down, on the table) Students:
Good afternoon, sir.
Teacher: We will be having a very interesting topic that I’d like to discuss with you guys, which is
Global Demography.
Teacher: But before we get to that, I’d like to show you a talk show that is all about demography.
(setting up the television)
Teacher: (finishes setting up, but before hitting the play button he asked) Are you guys able to
see it clearly? Students at the back (points at the students).
Students: Yes sir!
Teacher: Alright! Let’s begin (Hits the play button).
( A wide screen has activated, a talk show then popped off)
ROLEPLAY 2
• Important part of the topic, which is global demography.
• Demography which consists of healthcare, larger workforce, pros and
cons of global demography.
Moderator: Good day, everyone! Welcome to our daily talks– Chatter Matters. Today, we will be
discussing a very fascinating topic: global demography– how population trends affect the world.
We've got four amazing guests here today to share their insights on this topic from their different
perspectives. First, we have Dr. Reyes, our expert in healthcare, followed by Mr. Santos, the
mayor of our community. Next, we have Prof. Garcia, an economist, and lastly, Mrs. Ana, who
brings the voice of the citizens to the discussion. Now, let’s begin with Dr. Reyes.
Moderator: Hello, how are you Dr. Reyes?
Dr. Reyes: I’ve been feeling great, no complaints!
Moderator: That’s nice to hear! So, Dr. Reyes please do tell, as a healthcare expert; what do you
think will be the impact of healthcare on population growth?
Dr. Reyes: Great question! Healthcare is a big factor in how populations change. In wealthy
countries, medical advancements help people live longer, which results in older populations.
However, in poorer countries, high birth rates are common due to limited access to birth control
and maternal care.
Moderator: Hmm, quite insightful. Can you give an example of healthcare in our country, which is
the Philippines?
Dr. Reyes: Okay so, take the Philippines, for example. Whilst we've made progress in maternal
healthcare, many rural areas still don't have proper medical facilities. High birth rates put a lot of
pressure on resources like hospitals and schools. By investing in better healthcare and family
planning education, we can promote sustainable population growth.
Moderator: But how do we invest in that, that will actually benefit in the long run?
Dr. Reyes: Hmm… I suppose we have to build more clinics and hospitals especially in rural areas
to give them proper medical facilities and family planning education.
Moderator: That will certainly do. Investing in these areas can help create a sustainable and
healthier population growth, especially in rural areas. It’s all about making healthcare more
accessible and educating communities about the options they have.
Moderator: Okay, thank you very much, Dr. Reyes. That was very insightful, I appreciate the
answers. Now let’s move on to our Government official, Mr. Santos, our mayor.
Moderator: So Mr. Mayor, Do you have any additional ideas on how the government addresses
this type of issue?
Mr. Mayor: Since the government’s role plays in balancing population growth. We implemented
policies that will promote family planning to prevent overpopulation. Programs like the
Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act (RH Law) help provide contraception and
education to families.
Moderator: Hm, I see. But what about migration, what are your thoughts and ideas about it?
Mr. Mayor: Well, since many Filipinos work abroad due to limited job opportunities. This helps
our economy through remittances, however, it also leads to ‘brain drain,’ where skilled workers
leave the country. So, I suppose, we need to create better local job opportunities to retain our
workforce.
Moderator: Okay, thank you Mr. Mayor. So speaking of economy, that will bring us to our
economist, Prof. Garcia. Any ideas?
Prof. Garcia: Hmm. Population changes directly affect economic growth. A young population
means a strong workforce, however, if there aren’t enough jobs, it leads to unemployment and
poverty. On the other hand, an aging population increases healthcare costs and pension burdens.
If we correlate this one to our country, our population is growing fast, but many struggle to find
work. If we invest in education and skill development, we can create a competitive workforce.
Additionally, industries should focus on technology and automation to maintain productivity even
as the population ages.
Moderator: That’s great! But, how do we invest in this? In what what?
Prof. Garcia: Well, for instance, we can create job opportunities. Just like supporting small and
medium enterprises since it involves financial support through grants, low-interest loans, and tax
incentives. This also improves market access with trade fairs, e-commerce, and export
assistance. Lastly, it offers business development services like mentorship and training. These
actions are very impactful in contributing to our economic growth.
Moderator: That is certainly a strong suggestion right there. Now, let us hear from Ana, an ordinary
citizen experiencing these challenges.
Ana: Thank you! So, As a mother of three, I see firsthand how population issues affect families.
Raising children is very expensive—education, healthcare, and daily expenses are hard to
manage. Many parents don’t have access to family planning services, leading to unplanned
pregnancies. And I also have relatives working abroad, because they couldn’t find good jobs here.
It’s really difficult for families to be separated. However, If the government and businesses take
action to provide better opportunities, people won’t have to leave the country for work.
Moderator: Thank you very much for opening up and sharing your story, Mrs. Ana. Many people
can relate to the struggle of managing the expenses of raising children while also dealing with the
difficulty of finding good jobs. Now, before we conclude, let’s summarise the solutions given by
our experts.
Moderator: So, it's clear that addressing population challenges requires a comprehensive
approach. We need to improve healthcare services to manage birth rates and support our aging
population, especially in rural areas.
Moderator: How can we achieve this? As we’ve discussed, building clinics and hospitals would
have a great impact. The government should focus on family planning and creating jobs to help
families. Investing in education and technology is really important to maintain a strong and skilled
workforce. Lastly, we must ensure families have the support they need to face these challenges.
By working together, we can build a brighter future for all.
Moderator: Thank you for being with us today, and we look forward to more discussions in the
future. See you!
END OF THE TALK SHOW
Teacher: Alright! So first question, based on the video, what will be the future of the Global
demography, especially here in the Philippines? I will be giving points to those who can answer
it.
(a student raises her hand)
Teacher: Okay, you may stand up, and share your ideas.
Student 1: As far as I know, I think the Philippines will face challenges with its growing population,
but it also offers a strong workforce. This growth will put pressure on resources like healthcare
and jobs. Urbanization will cause issues like traffic and pollution, while an aging population could
be a concern later. Migration, especially OFWs, will also impact the economy. To manage all of
this, the country will need to focus on sustainable development and improving infrastructure
Teacher: Great job! You’ve actually highlighted the issues like population growth and urbanization.
I agree, sustainable development isn’t just about protecting the environment but also ensuring
economic growth benefits for everyone. Focusing on improving infrastructure will definitely help
address these types of challenges. Well said!
(The teacher took a moment to check his watch, realising it’s already time)
Teacher: I guess, that would be all class. Have you guys learned something? Any questions?
Students: (shaking their heads) None, sir.
Teacher: (nods) Alright, let’s call it a day, see you and have a great weekend!
